  • Impact of sand media continuous drying and rewetting cyclic on nutrients transformation performance from reclaimed wastewater effluent at soil aquifer treatment
Abdalkarim S. Gharbia, Balázs Zákányi, Márton Tóth
    Scientific Reports, 2024
Reusing reclaimed wastewater became a practical resource for water utilization in groundwater recharge and irrigation activities. However, the quality of reclaimed wastewater needs improvement to meet the environmental regulations and reduce contamination risks. A laboratory-scale study simulated a soil aquifer treatment (SAT) system, exploring the synergistic effects of wet and dry cycles alongside key physicochemical parameters on pollutant removal efficiency using a glass column filled with quartz sand as the filtration medium. The investigation focused on the cyclic wetting and drying phases to unravel their impact on removing NH4+, NO3−, and PO43−. The synthetic wastewater introduced into the system exhibited varying pollutant concentrations during wet and dry periods, influenced by dynamic soil water content (WC%), pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), and oxidation–reduction potential (ORP). The high removal rates of 93% for PO43− and 43% for Total N2 demonstrate the system’s capability to reduce concentrations significantly under dynamic alternating between wet and dry conditions. Results unveiled that the wet period consistently yielded higher removal rates for N2 species. Interestingly, for PO43−, the dry periods demonstrated a higher removal efficiency. Moreover, the study identified an average NO3− production during the experimental phases as a byproduct of nitrification. The average NO3− production in wet periods was 2.5 mg/L, whereas it slightly decreased to 2.2 mg/L in dry periods. These findings underscore the nuanced influence of wet and dry conditions on specific pollutants within SAT systems. Applying the logistic regression model and principal component analysis demonstrated the statistical significance of WC, pH, DO, and ORP in predicting wet/dry conditions, providing quantitative insights into their influential roles on the nutrient dynamic concentrations. This study contributes valuable data to our understanding of SAT systems, offering practical implications for designing and implementing sustainable wastewater treatment practices and pollution management across diverse environmental contexts.
  • Innovation in assessment of the geothermal energy potential of abandoned hydrocarbon wells in the southern and southeastern foreground of the Bükk Mountains, northeast Hungary

    Hydrogeology Journal, 2022
An innovative methodology is introduced to study abandoned oil exploration drillings for possible geothermal energy production at a test area in northeast Hungary. An evaluation method supported by robust statistical analysis was elaborated to provide the possible future investors with adequate technical and earth-science related information for their decision-making processes. All the available data of 161 abandoned hydrocarbon wells, with different physical conditions, were examined based on the proposed evaluation system to provide information about the geothermal energy potential for each well, as well as over a bigger area. The abandoned wells and their environments, the quantity of stored heat, and the fluid temperature and geothermal heat were the key parameters determined, which are critical when considering geothermal energy utilization or thermal water production. The maximum amount of stored energy was determined as the sum of the amount of energy extractable from the rock and the fluid. The heat stored in the rock was determined by basin modelling. The evaluation process, using one-dimensional (1D) basin modelling and 3D lithological-stratigraphic modelling, was successfully applied in the pilot area. The maximum amount of heat stored in the fluid can be determined by subtracting the heat stored in the rock from the total heat. Drilling and completing geothermal wells are rather expensive in Hungary, depending on the depth and the types of geological formations. The application of this research could greatly reduce the cost and risk of creating new geothermal energy systems based on production wells or abandoned wells in Hungary or elsewhere.
  • Experimental and numerical study for the adsorption behavior of Cu(II) and Mn(II) in quartz sand
Abdalkarim S. Gharbia, Balázs Zákányi, Márton Tóth
    Sustainable Water Resources Management, 2022
Heavy metals such as Cu(II) and Mn(II) are prevalent in the environment. The effect of heavy metals on the soils environment is based on the ability of soils to mobilize these contaminants. According to the soil decontamination perspective, examining the reaction technique between heavy metals and soil is indispensable. This study carried out experiments to investigate Cu(II) and Mn(II) adsorption behaviour in quartz sand. The isothermal adsorption results for Cu(II) and Mn(II) presented that the adsorption capacity reached the peak value when the initial concentration was about 10 mg/L. The declines of H+ ions could uprise the adsorption rate activity for Cu(II) and Mn(II) and decrease the soil ability of the desorption for Cu(II) and Mn(II) ions. The adsorption rate of Cu(II) and Mn(II) is lower than the desorption rate under the situation of a low pH range with a solid acidic and low concentration of Cu(II) and Mn(II). The Freundlich and Langmuir adsorption isotherm models were applied to investigate the adsorption isotherm of Cu(II) and Mn(II). The study results confirmed that the Freundlich model synchronous the best with the observed experimental data compared with the Langmuir solution.
  • Analytically Supported Numerical Modeling of Horizontal and Radial Collector Wells
Ferenc Szekely, Gabor Nyiri, Peter Szucs, Balazs Zakanyi
    Journal of Hydrologic Engineering, 2021
Riverbank filtration (RBF) is widely used in drinking water production all over the world. The horizontal and radial collector wells are among the most important water production facilities in case of the RBF aquifers. In this study several types of modeling methods are used to analyze the hydraulic conditions of horizontal and radial collector wells. The unsteady and steady-state flow in homogeneous, infinite, semi-infinite, and square-shaped bounded aquifers are investigated. The effect of delayed gravity response is modeled. Three-dimensional analytical and numerical finite-difference (FD) solution techniques are applied during the simulations to provide more reliable calculation results. Comparative analyses are carried out to optimize the wellbore drawdown in FD simulations. This important value is controlled by the local head loss due to the radial flow in vertical plane normal to the axes of screens. The multimesh FD simulation software FLOW is used for infinite and semi-infinite aquifers, while the MODFLOW Revised Multi-Node Well (MNW2) package is applied to the square-shaped aquifers. The late time partitioning (LTP) method is introduced to estimate the late time drawdown in infinite aquifers using semianalytical steady-state drawdown equations considering circular recharge boundaries. The latter value is derived by the semianalytical CW software. The use of results of various mostly analytically based solutions confirmed or improved the accuracy of the approximate numerical solutions. Such analytical support is vital for proper evaluation of the operation of horizontal and radial collector wells.

Tokaj Mountains, as a large Miocene volcanic region in North-East Hungary, is the homeland of the famous Tokaj wine. The Tokaj wine region can be found on the world heritage list of UNESCO. Although there were several mineral prospecting activities at the Tokaj Mountains in the 1960s and 1970s, the groundwater resources on a regional scale have not been revealed yet. The regional water budget and the groundwater flow systems were not known before the complex hydrogeological investigations recently carried out by the University of Miskolc. Although shallow groundwater is being produced at some small-scale waterworks to cover local drinking water demands, it has believed that there is no chance to find thermal water and to extract underground heat in this volcanic area because of the average hydraulic conductivity of the subsurface formations is very low. It is encouraging that intensive tectonic lines were determined by geophysical methods during the recent field campaigns. The presence of valuable thermal water resources was discovered along these tectonic lines opening new perspectives in geothermal exploration in this region. After the extensive field measurements, a regional scale groundwater-flow model was constructed to characterize the subsurface flow systems and the available shallow and deep groundwater resources of the Tokaj Mountains. A special prospecting methodology involving geological, hydrogeological and surface geophysical methods was elaborated to find thermal water resources in this complex geological/ecological environment.
  • Verification of Radiocarbon Transport Predicted by Numerical Modeling in the Porous Formation of NE Hungary Considering Paleo-Hydrogeology

    Radiocarbon, 2020
Verification of a groundwater flow model by radiocarbon (14C) data are presented taking into consideration the paleo-hydrogeological changes. Northeastern area of the Great Hungarian Plain was a deep-lying flat area, and its central part (Nyírség) has been uplifted in the last 15,000 years. These geological events have drastically changed the hydrogeological conditions of Nyírség. The groundwater flow system is composed of the Quaternary-Pliocene-Upper Pannonian clastic sediments. Groundwater flow modeling has been performed to define the main lateral and vertical flow directions and velocities controlling the propagation of the environmental radioactive tracer 14C. Solute-transport modeling was used to calculate the 14C activity. The recent steady-state groundwater flow velocity was reduced to a reasonable value characterizing the average flow velocity over the 15 ka simulation period using “trial and error” method. The best fit between the simulated and measured 14C data was achieved by assuming 0.4 flow velocity reduction factor. Results indicate that the present steady-state flow model with this flow velocity reduction factor is capable of reproducing the observed 14C data taking into account the effect of the significant uplift of the part of the land surface in the last 15 ka in NE Hungary.

  • Leaky Aquifer Models to Simulate the Well Flow in Fractured Aquifers with Linear Interporosity Flow
Ferenc Székely, Péter Szűcs, Balázs Zákányi
    Groundwater, 2019
Following Hemker and Maas (1987) the models of two or three leaky aquifers are applied to simulate the flow to vertical wells operating in the fractured or dual porosity aquifers. The software WellTest (WT) (Székely 2015) is used for calculating the drawdown and discharge rate variation. The comparative analysis with the independent analytical solutions by Boulton and Streltsova‐Adams (1978), Warren and Root (1963), Kazemi et al. (1969) concluded with acceptable agreement between the WT simulation and the alternate calculation methods. The selected field tests have been conducted in fractured limestone aquifers. The pumping test west of Copenhagen shows an example of fractured aquifer with considerable negative skin effect at the well face. The flowing well Wafra W1 in Kuwait operates in the two‐zone aquifer exhibiting sufficient vertical recharge via leakage beyond a circular domain of estimated radius of 2460 m.
