TikTok and the Development of Communication Competencies in University Students Eduardo Fabio Henríquez-Mendoza, Kimberly Jomaira Sánchez-Pilatasig, Wilson Alexander Zambrano-Vélez, Franklin Gustavo Santín-Picoita, José Ignacio Aguaded-Gómez Studies in Media and Communication, 2026 This research was conducted in a context of hyperconnectivity, where TikTok has become established as a key platform for the development of communication competencies among students in the Communication degree program. This study analyzed content consumption preferences on TikTok. It explored how students transition from recreational, entertainment-focused use to active, professional engagement driven by academic training. A descriptive research design was applied. The results indicate that 77 percent of students consume entertainment content and that 64.4 percent use TikTok as a means of relaxation. However, a progressive transition toward educational content is observed, associated with subjects such as audiovisual production, digital marketing, and pre-professional internships. In advanced academic cycles, the use of the platform is oriented toward professional positioning and the construction of a personal brand. The study concludes that TikTok fulfills a dual function as a space for leisure and as a formative tool.
From the Digital Divide to Algorithmic Vulnerability: A Systematic Review of Social Stratification in the AI Era (2015–2025) Manuel José Mera Cedeño, Gertrudis Amarilis Laínez Quinde, Wilson Alexander Zambrano Vélez, César Ernesto Roldán Martínez Social Sciences, 2026 The present study seeks to synthesize the scientific evidence from the last decade (2015–2025) regarding the transition from inequality in technological access toward social stratification mediated by automated decision-making systems. Following PRISMA 2020 guidelines and the SPIDER model, a corpus of 74 high-impact records from Scopus, Web of Science, ProQuest, and PsycINFO was examined. The results reveal an exponential growth in scientific production since 2018, marking a shift from infrastructure-based inequality toward a systemic stratification mediated by algorithmic opacity. Three critical sectors of exclusion are categorized: the socio-health nexus, the labor market, and the educational ecosystem. Methodologically, quantitative algorithmic auditing predominates (58%), although mixed sociotechnical approaches have increased by 25% since 2021 to capture experiences of intersectional vulnerability. The study concludes that AI acts as an active agent of social reproduction, necessitating a transition toward “Algorithmic Justice” and “Human-Centric Governance.” Finally, a “Reinstating AI” framework is proposed to democratize technological development and mitigate systemic biases, offering a roadmap for researchers and policymakers in the pursuit of technological sovereignty.
Efficacy of Non-Invasive Brain Stimulation in Improving Working Memory in Children and Adolescents with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: A Systematic Review Wilson Alexander Zambrano Vélez, Johanna Lilibeth Alcívar Ponce, Walter Gonzalo Bailón Bailón, Harol Marcial Castillo del Valle, Rocisela Adriana Baquerizo Quirumbay Brain Sciences, 2026 Background/Objectives: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is associated with working memory deficits linked to frontoparietal alterations. Non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) is a potential intervention to modulate neuroplasticity and improve this executive function. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the clinical efficacy of non-invasive brain stimulation techniques (tDCS/rTMS) for strengthening working memory in children and adolescents with ADHD. Methods: This systematic review adhered to the PRISMA 2020 guidelines, with a search of Scopus and Web of Science conducted to identify relevant studies published between 2011 and 2026. Eligibility criteria, defined a priori, included original empirical studies (RCTs and quasi-experimental designs) focusing on pediatric populations (≤18 years) diagnosed with ADHD. Eligible interventions involved tDCS or rTMS with explicit working memory outcomes. Only peer-reviewed articles published in English or Spanish were included. Reviews, case reports, and studies exclusive to adults were excluded. Data on application parameters, durability, and safety were extracted for narrative synthesis. Results: Six studies met the criteria. Both tDCS and rTMS targeting the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex showed improvements in working memory, particularly in executive components measured using digit span backward and N-back tasks. High-frequency rTMS (10 Hz) with repeated sessions showed more consistent effects, while tDCS showed modest and variable improvements. Evidence regarding long-term effects was limited. Both techniques were well-tolerated, with mild and transient adverse events. Conclusions: NIBS shows promise as a complementary intervention to improve working memory in pediatric ADHD; however, current evidence is limited. Larger, standardized, longitudinal trials are required to confirm its efficacy and clinical utility.
From Artificial Intelligence to Green Purchasing Behavior: The Role of Environmental Knowledge and Green Truth in Shaping Environmental Attitudes and the Purchase of Organic Products in University Students Wilson Zambrano-Vélez, Nelson Carrión-Bósquez, Jorge Bernal-Peralta, Andrés Vélez-Luna, Cristina Villacís-Mejía, et al. Sustainability Switzerland, 2026 This study explores how Artificial Intelligence (AI) shapes Green Purchasing Behavior through cognitive and attitudinal mechanisms by implementing the Stimulus–Organism–Response (SOR Model) Theory. It analyzes AI as an external stimulus that influences Environmental Knowledge and Green Truth, which, in turn, affects Environmental Attitudes and Green Purchasing Behavior. A cross-sectional quantitative design was employed using survey data collected from 412 consumers in the province of Guayas (Ecuador). The data were analyzed using partial least-squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). The results indicate that AI exerts a weak influence on Green Purchasing Behavior; instead, its impact operates primarily through indirect pathways. Specifically, AI significantly enhances Environmental Knowledge and promotes Green Truth, subsequently shaping consumers’ Environmental Attitudes. Furthermore, Environmental Attitude emerged as the strongest predictor of Green Purchasing Behavior, confirming its central role in translating internal evaluations into consumption decisions. These findings contribute to the literature by integrating AI into sustainable consumption models and demonstrate that its effectiveness depends on its ability to generate credible and meaningful internal responses rather than directly influencing behavior.
Green Advertising, Social Media Content, and Ecolabels as Drivers of Environmental Attitudes and Organic Purchase Behavior Mayra Samaniego-Arias, Nelson Carrión-Bósquez, Gabriel Usiña-Báscones, Andrés García-Umaña, Rubén Marchena-Chanduvi, et al. Sustainability Switzerland, 2026 The growing demand for organic food has increased the need to understand how green communication strategies shape sustainable food consumption. Based on the Stimulus–Organism–Response (SOR) model, this study examines whether Green Advertising, Social Media Content, and Ecolabels function as external stimuli that influence Environmental Attitudes and how these attitudes affect Green Purchasing Behavior, while also assessing the moderating role of age. A cross-sectional quantitative design was implemented, using a structured questionnaire administered to organic consumers in Ecuador. Data were collected from a sample of 739 consumers between December 2025 and January 2026 using a structured online survey administered via Google Forms. This study employed partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) to test the proposed hypotheses. The findings reveal that Green Advertising, Social Media Content, and Ecolabels positively influence Environmental Attitudes, which in turn significantly predicts Green Purchasing Behavior. However, age does not have a significant moderating effect on the proposed relationships. The findings suggest that green marketing strategies may be more effective when aligned with the development of pro-environmental attitudes. Thus, this study highlights the importance of incorporating attitudinal components into the design of marketing initiatives.
From Social Media Content to Value Co-Creation: Role of Environmental Attitude, Environmental Knowledge, and Green Truth Gabriel Usiña-Báscones, Nelson Carrión-Bósquez, Mayra Samaniego-Arias, Rubén Marchena-Chanduvi, Santiago Medina-Miranda, et al. Foods, 2026 This study examined how social media content influences value co-creation among organic product consumers through the mediating roles of environmental awareness, green truth, and environmental attitude. Grounded in the Stimulus-Organism-Response (SOR) framework, social media content is conceptualized as a stimulus, environmental awareness, green trust, and environmental attitude as internal organism states, and value co-creation as the behavioral response. A cross-sectional quantitative design was applied using a 20-item questionnaire administered to 739 organic-product consumers. Data were analyzed using partial least-squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). The results indicate that social media content does not directly affect value co-creation but significantly influences environmental awareness, green trust, and environmental attitude. Environmental awareness and green trust positively affect both environmental attitude and value co-creation, and environmental attitude emerges as the strongest direct predictor of value co-creation. These findings confirm the mediating role of cognitive and attitudinal mechanisms in transforming digital sustainability content into collaborative consumer behavior. This study contributes to the literature on sustainable consumption by integrating communication, cognitive, and attitudinal variables in a single explanatory model. Practically, the findings suggest that sustainability communication strategies in digital environments should prioritize credibility and environmental knowledge to foster consumer participation in value co-creation.
The social worker as a counselor and mediator of educational transformation Leslie Folleco, Patricia Santos Yánez, Wilson Zambrano Vélez, Rocisela Baquerizo Quirumbay Revista Electronica Interuniversitaria De Formacion Del Profesorado, 2024 The social worker has found a space for his performance in the educational context, however sometimes the role he plays is not aligned with the profession. The objective of this research is to identify the role of the social worker on the path towards educational transformation in Ecuador. For this purpose, the descriptive non-experimental quantitative method has been used. For this purpose, a questionnaire consisting of 9 items accompanied by a Likert-type scale was applied. After that, the instrument was validated through piloting and the consistency test with p value=.847. The questionnaire was applied to 115 social work professionals nationwide, workers from basic, technical or university educational entities in the public and private sectors. The results allowed us to conclude that social workers from public and private entities have limitations in the exercise of their functions, however they consider that they have potential areas of intervention where they can execute projects in favor of the educational community.
