Zoology and Ecology, 2026
Aquatic ecosystems in hot arid environments can support a high level of biodiversity worldwide, particularly birds. This study focused on the evaluation of the ecological importance of the urban wetland Chott El Oued in north-eastern Algerian Sahara as a critical habitat for bird communities. Bi-monthly monitoring was conducted between September 2023 and August 2024 to assess avian community composition, phenological patterns, protection statutes, and populations dynamic of waterbirds. A total of 71 bird species (39 waterbirds and 32 terrestrial birds) were documented in our study area, belonging to 15 orders and 29 families. Four Near Threatened species (IUCN Red List) and 21 protected species under Algerian law were identified. Among the 12460 recorded individuals, waterbirds dominated (77.28%, 9926 individuals), with 11 key species such as the Near Threatened, resident-breeding Marbled Duck. Phenologically, 17 are breeding species, whereas 54 are non-breeding with 38 being passage visitors and 16 winterers. These findings highlight the contribution of Chott El Oued in maintaining the regional biodiversity despite ecological and anthropogenic challenges and consolidating the urgent need for comprehensive conservation strategies to protect its biodiversity. Safeguarding this vital urban wetland is essential not only for sustaining endangered species but also for maintaining regional and global ecological balance. - BREEDING RANGE EXPANSION OF THE BLACK-WINGED KITE (ELANUS CAERULEUS): EVIDENCE FROM THE KING ABDULAZIZ ROYAL RESERVE, SAUDI ARABIA

Zoology and Ecology, 2026
Between January and May 2025, fieldwork conducted in the King Abdulaziz Royal Reserve, supplemented by data from the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), revealed new insights into the distribution and breeding behaviour of the Black-winged Kite (Elanus caeruleus) in Saudi Arabia. Observations confirmed the presence of both juvenile and adult individuals across seasons and led to the discovery of an active nest containing three eggs in a Ziziphus tree, providing concrete evidence of local breeding. The species was primarily observed in habitats in Al-Rawdah characterized by dense Ziziphus stands and surrounding open areas that support rodent populations its primary prey. National occurrence data (n = 220) highlighted seasonal trends, with peaks in March and October, suggesting a partially migratory cycle that combines local reproduction with irruptive dispersal. These findings confirm a significant expansion of the species nesting range, facilitated by habitat availability, increased prey abundance linked to land-use changes, and the establishment of protected areas. The study underscores the importance of continuous monitoring, adaptive habitat management, and the integration of new breeding sites into conservation frameworks to support the sustainable expansion of the species in the region. - Dietary composition of the Pharaoh Eagle-Owl (Bubo ascalaphus) in the Northern Algerian Sahara

Ornis Hungarica, 2025
The breeding population of the White Stork in Algeria has historically been confined to the northern part of the country. During the 2025 breeding season (February to June), confirmed nesting occurred in El Oued (2 nests), Ouled Djellal (1 nest), and Menea (1 breeding attempt in 2003) provinces. The observed Southward expansion of the White Stork breeding population into the hot and hyper-arid climate of the Sahara represents a notable ecological shift in its known breeding range. Moreover, old datasets and historical records further indicate significant expansions of migratory flyways into southeastern Saharan regions. These findings highlight the White Storks’ adaptability to climate change and anthropogenic pressures under extreme aridity conditions, but also underscore the rapid ecological transformations occurring under climate change and human activity. They emphasized the critical role of Saharan ecosystems in providing foraging resources and optimal nesting sites for this resilient population. - First evidence of breeding and eastward range expansion of the Mediterranean short-toed lark (Alaudala rufescens) in King Abdulaziz Royal Reserve, Saudi Arabia

Zoology and Ecology, 2025
In this study, we made a list of all the Carabidae species recorded in Ouargla palm groves in the Algerian Sahara from August 2021 to September 2022 using pitfall traps, and we have investigated their diversity, abundance, and the environmental factors influencing their spatiotemporal distribution. The inventory allowed the identification of 28 species of Carabidae, with a total number of 288 specimens and the dominance of Lophyra flexuosa (202 individuals). The identified species belong to eleven subfamilies, of which Harpalinae was the most diverse with 10 species, whereas Cicindelinae was the most abundant (231 individuals). The values of Shannon-Weaver index (H’) varied between 1.72 and 1.87 in the different sampling sites. The spatial distribution of Carabidae species seems to be influenced by several ecological parameters, mainly the soil covering and the palm grove maintenance. However, the temporal distribution of these insects seems to be influenced by climatic factors, namely precipitation and temperature.
