Optimizing bacillus subtilis dosage to boost growth and gut health in nile tilapia (oreochromis niloticus) in brackish water conditions Rahmi Rahmi, Nur Insana Salam, Fitri Indah Yani, Andi Indra Jaya, Akmal Akmal, Khairun Nisaa, Farhanah Wahyu, Dan Bunga Rante Tampangallo Bio Web of Conferences, 2025 Tilapia farming is central to global food security, yet efforts to expand production into saline environments are often limited by reduced growth, metabolic strain, and increased disease susceptibility. This study examined whether synbiotic diets combining Bacillus subtilis with selected prebiotic substrates could improve growth, hematology, intestinal structure, immune responses, and gut microbiota in Nile tilapia exposed to salinity stress. A 12-week feeding trial, structured using a Completely Randomized Design, tested graded levels of B. subtilis. Growth performance, feed efficiency, and survival were measured together with hematological parameters and gut histology, including villus height and mucosal thickness. Immune gene expression and microbiota profiles were assessed through RT-PCR and Next-Generation Sequencing. Synbiotic supplementation enhanced specific growth rate, feed conversion ratio, and survival, with the optimal response at 10 5 CFU/mL. Blood indices suggested improved oxygen transport, and histology showed stronger intestinal integrity. Molecular analyses revealed greater microbial diversity and upregulated immune-related genes, offering increased resistance to Aeromonas hydrophila. These results demonstrate the promise of synbiotic nutrition in reducing salinity-related stress and strengthening tilapia health. Future work should include long-term trials and explore multi-strain or multi-prebiotic formulations to further refine synbiotic strategies for sustainable aquaculture.
Dietary crude protein requirement of golden rabbitfish Siganus guttatus fed low fishmeal diets with varying soybean meal: influence on growth, plasma biochemistry, amino acid profiles, and IGF-1 mRNA expression Asda Laining, Sri Redjeki Hesti Mulyaningrum, Bunga Rante Tampangallo, Ike Trismawanti, Muhammad Chaidir Undu, Alimuddin Alimuddin, Igor Pirozzi Aquaculture International, 2025 A 4-month feeding trial was conducted in 1.5 m 3 floating sea cages to determine the optimum dietary protein requirement for cultured golden rabbitfish, Siganus guttatus fed low fishmeal-based diets. Four test diets were formulated to contain different levels of crude protein (CP) at 25, 30, 35, and 40% designated as P25, P30, P35, and P40, respectively. Golden rabbitfish ( n = 20) with an initial body weight of 41.9 ± 0.7 g were randomly stocked into 1 × 1 × 1.5 m 3 triplicate cages per dietary treatment. Fish were hand-fed three times per day to satiation. The optimum level of dietary CP to produce maximum growth of golden rabbitfish was 35.2% determined by second-order polynomial regression analysis ( r = 0.751) for three parameters (specific growth rate, protein retention, and intestinal IGF-1 mRNA expression). Protein retention significantly increased as the protein increased up to 30% and then further decreased as dietary protein increased from 35 to 40% with the maximum value obtained at CP of 33.2% ( r = 0.896). Fish fed the P35 diet had the highest IGF-1 mRNA expression level in the intestine, 3.6-fold from the P40 diet and 5.1-fold from the P25 diet with optimal CP was 35.1% to obtain the maximum value ( r = 0.776). Based on techniques implemented for the three variables as mentioned above, of SGR (35.2%), PR (33.2%) and IGF-1 (35.1%), the golden rabbitfish required an optimum level of dietary CP at 34.5% when fed SBM based diets and low fishmeal.
Probiotic Bacillus subtilis Improves Hematological, Growth, and Gut Health Performance in the Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) Cultured Under Salinity Stress Rahmi et al. Egyptian Journal of Aquatic Biology and Fisheries, 2025 The Nile tilapia (O. niloticus) cultivated in waters with elevated salinity often face stress that negatively impacts their growth, immune system, and intestinal health. This study investigated the effects of adding the probiotic B. subtilis to the diet at various doses (103, 105, 107, and 109 CFU/mL) on the blood parameters, growth, and intestinal structure of tilapia reared at 15ppt salinity. In a 60-day feeding trial, fish fed 105 CFU/mL of B. subtilis showed significant benefits, including higher red blood cell counts, improved hematocrit levels, better growth rates and better feed conversion, as revealed by microscopes showing healthier intestinal tissue. Microscope analysis revealed healthier intestinal tissue, suggesting improved nutrient absorption and gut integrity. While white blood cell numbers showed only slight changes, the results suggested the probiotic had a positive effect on the fish's immunity. The results of this study demonstrate that the administration of dietary B. subtilis at an optimal dose of 105 CFU/mL can effectively alleviate the physiological and structural challenges caused by salinity stress, thereby supporting healthier and more productive tilapia farming without the need for antibiotic use.
DIYM O2Rs Microbubble Aeration as an Alternative to Conventional Root Blower Systems in Super-Intensive Vannamei Shrimp Farming Athraa Abdulwahid Khalaf, Aysar Tuama Al-Awadi, Riyadh Jasim Mohammed Al-Saadi Journal of Studies in Science and Engineering, 2025 Local scour, the erosion of sediment around hydraulic structures caused by flowing water, is a major factor contributing to bridge failure, particularly near piers and abutments. While scour mechanisms around individual structural components have been widely studied, limited attention has been given to the interactive effects of abutment geometry and spacing relative to piers. This study investigates the influence of two abutment shapes (wing-wall and trapezoidal) on the size and formation of scour holes around a cylindrical pier. Fifty laboratory experiments were conducted in a flume under clear-water conditions, testing two pier–abutment distances (22.5 cm and 17.5 cm) across varying hydraulic parameters. Results indicate that, at a fixed spacing, scour depth around the pier decreases with increased flow depth but increases with higher Froude numbers and flow intensity. When the abutment is positioned closer to the pier, flow convergence intensifies, causing individual scour holes to merge and form a larger scour hole. The presence of abutments increased the scour depth by up to 41.56% for the wing-wall and 52.04% for the trapezoidal model at a 22.5 cm spacing, with a further increase observed at 17.5 cm spacing. Empirical scour prediction models developed using IBM SPSS 30 demonstrated high accuracy, yielding coefficients of determination (R²) of 93.6% and 91.6% for the wing-wall and trapezoidal configurations, respectively.
