Health Risk Assessment of Nitrate Pollution in the Voronezh Region Alina A. Krasnikova, Oleg V. Klepikov, Igor I. Mehantyev, Tatiana I. Prozhorina, Nikolay P. Mamchik, et al. Public Health and Life Environment, 2025 Introduction: The solution to the problem of assessing current nitrate pollution and the associated human health risks has not lost its relevance due to frequent detection of high concentrations of nitrates in drinking water and food. Objective: To assess health risks of nitrate pollution of drinking water and food products for the population of the Voronezh Region. Materials and methods: We used data on quality indicators of centralized domestic drinking water supply systems and levels of contaminants in food raw materials collected within public health surveillance for the period of 2012 to 2024 in 34 administrative territories of the Voronezh Region. The main indicator was the hazard quotient (HQ), which characterizes non-carcinogenic risk. Results: Health risk assessment of nitrate pollution of drinking water and food products for the population of the Voronezh Region showed that the intake of nitrates from food posed greater risks of adverse human health effects than that from drinking water, since risk indicators and the number of territories with poor food quality and safety were higher. Children were found to be at higher risk of exposure to nitrate pollution from among the population groups under consideration (children, adolescents, and adults): a dangerous level of risk posed by nitrate exposure from dietary sources was established in 32 of 34 administrative territories (HQ ranging from 3.18 to 6.24); in 4 districts, HQ of 1.10 to 2.24 indicated a possible adverse health effect of nitrates in drinking water. Conclusions: Nitrates are typical pollutants for the territories of the Voronezh Region, which necessitates in-depth studies of the sources and causes of their entry into various environments to mitigate nitrate exposure of the population. Preventive measures are recommended, including proposals for improving monitoring and informing the public.
Acoustic Impact of Rail Transport on Residential Areas of the City of Voronezh Pavel A. Sukhanov, Tatiana I. Prozhorina, Anastasiya S. Boeva, Oleg V. Klepikov Public Health and Life Environment, 2024 Introduction: Adverse human health effects of railway noise are examined in many foreign and domestic studies. The purpose of our work was to assess the noise impact of rail transport and its contribution to creating an acoustic discomfort zone in residential areas of the city of Voronezh. Materials and methods: We took 36 noise measurements at nine monitoring points in the residential area of single-family housing construction at the distances of 25, 50, and 75 meters from the main local source of noise, i.e. railway traffic, including long-distance and suburban passenger trains. The “Assistant” sound level meter (accuracy class 1) was used for measurements taken in November 2023 – January 2024 on weekends (Sat–Sun) in the daytime and at night. Contribution of railway transport to the overall noise level was then estimated. Results: Field measurements showed that in the daytime, the equivalent noise level along the railway track exceeded hygienic standards by 1.4 to 1.7 dBA in the absence of railway traffic due to the proximity to a highway (70 m) and by 14 to 18.6 dBA in its presence; at night – by 2.2 to 3.2 dBA and by 25 to 29.9 dBA, respectively. This means that during 24 hours, 30 % of the territory of the study object is exposed to higher noise levels in the absence of railway traffic. During the passage of long-distance passenger trains and suburban electric trains, the discomfort zone increases to 60 % in the daytime and to 100 % at night. Conclusions: In our case, rail transport noise pollution can be reduced by installing additional translucent noise shields, landscaping the adjacent territory to separate residential buildings from railway tracks, and planting trees and shrubs. In general, when designing railway lines and their infrastructure facilities, it is important to envisage sanitary gaps with modern means of protection against noise.
Assessment of Motor Vehicle Noise Levels on the Territory of New Residential Complexes in Voronezh City Tatiana I. Prozhorina, Pavel A. Sukhanov, Oleg V. Klepikov, Semen A. Kurolap, Yulia A. Sukhanova Public Health and Life Environment, 2023 Introduction: Adverse human health effects of motor vehicle noise, which levels are the highest in urban areas, are considered in many foreign and domestic studies. Objective: To establish the zone of acoustic discomfort related to motor vehicle noise on the territory of new residential complexes in the city of Voronezh. Materials and methods: Using the “Assistant” sound level meter (accuracy class 1), we conducted 72 noise measurements at 36 monitoring points within the 20.5 hectare area of two residential complexes at distances of 7.5, 50, 100, 200, 300, 350, and 430 meters from the four-lane highway, the main local source of traffic noise. The measurements were taken in May 2023 on working days (Monday to Friday) in the daytime and at night. Results: We have established that modern urban planning technologies and solutions used in the construction of new residential complexes are unable to eliminate the zone of acoustic discomfort. According to the results of field measurements, the equivalent noise level along the highway in the daytime exceeds permissible levels by 17.8–19.7 dBA and at night – by 22.6–25.7 dBA. The noise limit is also exceeded in the inner yard (on the playground, in the recreation area). The significant area of the study object is almost completely affected by traffic noise at the distances of up to 100 m and 200 m in the daytime and at night, respectively, which creates an unfavorable acoustic environment that has a negative impact on the local residents. Conclusions: To reduce the area of the acoustic discomfort zone, it is recommended to take measures to reduce traffic intensity in the study area by developing the road network and public transport system, prohibiting motorcycle and freight traffic on this street, especially at nighttime, improving landscaping of the adjoining territory, and installing transparent noise barriers that will prevent noise transfer between houses to the inner territory of the residential complex and the lower floors of the buildings.
Population health risk assessment associated with air pollution in the area of natural chalk industrial processing complex influence Yu I Stepkin, T I Prozhorina, S A Kurolap, O V Klepikov, A S Boeva Journal of Physics Conference Series, 2021 Increased air pollution in the areas where large mining complexes are located poses a risk to public health. The article examines harmful substances atmosphere emissions’ impact on the population health living near an industrial mining enterprise of the Kopanishchensky natural chalk deposit in the Ostrogozhsky district of the Voronezh region. Environmental risks calculations showed that out of 36 chemical substances that pollute the atmosphere, 5 substances have a carcinogenic effect. The maximum values of the total carcinogenic risk do not exceed the dangerous threshold, however, they need to be carefully monitored. The main contributor to the total risk is carbon soot – 99.9%. Calculations results of non-carcinogenic risks due to inhalation exposure showed that the respiratory organs which are negatively affected by 8 out of 10 priority chemicals, are most potentially affected.
Integrated assessment and GIS-mapping of the environmental state of the city of Voronezh (Russia) Semen A. Kurolap, Oleg V. Klepikov, Pavel M. Vinogradov, Tatyana I. Prozhorina, Liudmila O. Sereda Geography Environment Sustainability, 2015 The authors have created a geoinformation-analytical system (GIS) for integrated assessment and mapping of the ecological conditions of the territory according to the criteria of anthropogenic impact and quality of the urban environment, as well as the response of woody plants and the health of the child population (on the example of Voronezh – the largest industrial city of the Central Chernozem region). It has been identified that anthropogenic pollution is formed by the industrial-transport sector and varies with regard to the features of the functional planning infrastructure; near the industrial facilities of the petrochemical profile in the left-Bank sector of the city, conditions for the existence of woody plants significantly worsen, which is manifested in the inhibition of their development; child morbidity rate is significantly higher in industrially polluted neighborhoods with high load of pollutant emissions from industry and transport. The diseases primarily associated with pollution are congenital anomalies, neoplasms, endocrine pathology and diseases of the urogenital area. The industrial zone is the main contributor to the total pollution of air, but the transport zone is the main contributor to the total pollution of soil and snow cover.
