Deep Neural Network-Based Smart Grid Stability Analysis: Enhancing Grid Resilience and Performance Pranobjyoti Lahon, Aditya Bihar Kandali, Utpal Barman, Ruhit Jyoti Konwar, Debdeep Saha, Manob Jyoti Saikia Energies, 2024 With the surge in population growth, the demand for electricity has escalated, necessitating efficient solutions to enhance the reliability and security of electrical systems. Smart grids, functioning as self-sufficient systems, offer a promising avenue by facilitating bi-directional communication between producers and consumers. Ensuring the stability and predictability of smart grid operations is paramount to evaluating their efficacy and usability. Machine learning emerges as a crucial tool for decision-making amidst fluctuating consumer demand and power supplies, thereby bolstering the stability and reliability of smart grids. This study explores the performance of various machine learning classifiers in predicting the stability of smart grid systems. Utilizing a smart grid dataset obtained from the University of California’s machine learning repository, classifiers such as logistic regression (LR), XGBoost, linear support vector machine (Linear SVM), and SVM with radial basis function (SVM-RBF) were evaluated. Evaluation metrics, including accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 score, were employed to assess classifier performance. The results demonstrate high accuracy across all models, with the Deep Neural Network (DNN) model achieving the highest accuracy of 99.5%. Additionally, LR, linear SVM, and SVM-RBF exhibited comparable accuracy levels of 98.9%, highlighting their efficacy in smart grid stability prediction. These findings underscore the utility of machine learning techniques in enhancing the reliability and efficiency of smart grid systems.
A Compact MIMO Antenna Based on Modal Analysis for 5G Wireless Applications Parveez Shariff Bhadravathi Ghouse, Deepthi Mariam John, Pallavi R. Mane, Debdeep Saha, Supreetha Balavalikar Shivarama, Sameena Pathan, Bharathi Raghavendra Bhat, Shweta Vincent, Tanweer Ali Micromachines, 2024 This article presents a planar, non-angular, series-fed, dual-element dipole array MIMO antenna operating at 28 GHz with the metasurface-based isolation improvement technique. The initial design is a single-element antenna with a dual dipole array which is series-fed. These dipole elements are non-uniform in shape and distance. This dipole antenna results in end-fire radiation. The dipole antenna excites the J1 mode for its operation. Further, with the view to improve channel capacity, the dipole array expands the antenna to a three-element MIMO antenna. In the MIMO antenna structure, the sum of the J1, J2, and J3 modes is excited, causing resonance at 28 GHz. This article also proposes a metasurface structure with wide stopband characteristics at 28 GHz for isolation improvement. The metasurface is composed of rectangle-shaped structures. The defected ground and metasurface structure combination suppresses the surface wave coupling among the MIMO elements. The proposed antenna results in a bandwidth ranging from 26.7 to 29.6 GHz with isolation improvement greater than 21 dB and a gain of 6.3 dBi. The antenna is validated with the diversity parameters of envelope correlation coefficient, diversity gain, and channel capacity loss.
Optimal Placement of H∞ Loop Shaping Damping Controller Using Dynamic Relative Gain Array Mithu Sarkar, Debdeep Saha, Krishna Kumba, Venkateshwarlu Gundu IEEE Access, 2024 Low-damping inter-area oscillation is a severe problem for the smooth operation of the interconnected power system. These oscillations are observed due to the bulk power transmission from one area to another through a weak tie line. The power system becomes unstable or even blackout due to such oscillations. Hence, it is necessary to identify these oscillations accurately. This paper deals with the identification of different electromechanical modes and the optimal placement of a damping controller in the power system. Dynamic Relative Gain Array (DRGA) tools are adopted to identify the optical location of the Power System Stabilizers (PSS) to damp out the inter-area oscillations. In a Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) system, the DGRA number gives an idea of the interaction of the different control loops. DRGA identified the control loop with the least interaction with others. The parameters of the PSS are optimally determined using a residue-based approach. A loop-shaping (LS) based $H_{\\infty }$ controller is also proposed and optimally placed using the DRGA approach for further improving the damping of the inter-area oscillations. The DRGA analysis approach is compared with the model analysis approach like the speed-based residues, and perticification factor analysis approaches. IEEE-39 bus test system is used for verifying the damping performance of the proposed controllers. It is verified from the obtained results that $H_{\\infty }$ LS controller is optically placed and the damping of the inter-area oscillations is improved effectively.
Impact of PLL and Virtual Inertia on Deregulated AGC System Integrated with Parallel AC/HVDC Sanjeev Kumar Bhagat, Lalit Chandra Saikia, Naladi Ram Babu, Debdeep Saha IETE Journal of Research, 2023 This article investigates the impact of phase-locked loop (PLL) systems along with virtual inertia on system dynamics of a parallel AC/HVDC tie-line integrated two-area automatic generation control (AGC) system under a deregulated scenario. The multi-area AGC system comprises two thermal and hydro-gas in area-1, 2. An attempt is made to utilize a new secondary controller named the two-degree-of-freedom tilt-integral-derivative (2DOF-TID) controller. Its gains and PLL parameters are optimized by a novel meta-heuristic algorithm called a bird swarm algorithm (BSA). The system dynamics corresponding to the proposed 2DOF-TID are compared with 2DOF-PID, 2DOF-PI explored better system dynamics with a 2DOF-TID controller. The system dynamics are compared with AC alone, AC/HVDC, AC/HVDC tie-line incorporating with PLL, virtual inertia revealed the better performance of the latter. Moreover, the effect of variation in PLL parameter on the system dynamics are also analyzed and studies suggested that the obtained response at the nominal value of natural frequency (ωn ) and damping coefficient (ζ) reduces the subsequent oscillation and provides better dynamics other than varying condition.
Cascade controller based modeling of a four area thermal: gas AGC system with dependency of wind turbine generator and PEVs under restructured environment Debdeep Saha, Lalit Chandra Saikia, Asadur Rahman Protection and Control of Modern Power Systems, 2022 This paper investigates automatic generation control (AGC) of a realistic hybrid four-control area system with a distinct arrangement of thermal units, gas units and additional power generation. A proportional-integral-double derivative cascaded with proportional-integral (PIDD-PI) controller is employed as secondary controller in each control area for robust restructured AGC considering bilateral transactions and contract violations. The Harris Hawks algorithm is used to determine the optimal controller gains and system parameters under several scenarios. Electric vehicle (EV) aggregators are employed in each area to participate fully along with thermal and gas units to compensate for the unscheduled system demand in the local area. A comparison of non-cascaded controllers such as PI-PD, PD-PID and the proposed PIDD-PI proves the superiority of the last. The effect of the decline in inertia is closely examined because of the sudden outage of a generating unit while at the same time considering the change in area frequency response characteristics and area control error. EV fleets make significant contributions to improving the system dynamics during system inertia loss. The use of EVs in the presence of a wind energy-supported grid can provide a stable efficacy to the power grid. Numerous simulations with higher load demands, stochastic communication delays in presence of the WTG plant, and violations in system loadings and changes in gas turbine time constants in the absence of WTG demonstrate the robustness of the proposed control approach.
Phase locked loop parameterisation in AC/DC interconnected system for a multi-source AGC system under open market environment Saha Debdeep, Saikia Lalit Chandra International Journal of Power Electronics, 2022 This article emphasises on deregulated AGC of a realistic multi-machine gas - thermal plant with dish-Stirling solar-thermal (DSTS) as additional power generation sources in each control area by taking into accounts of AC/DC with phase locked loop (PLL) dynamics. Eigenvalue analysis confirms the steadiness of the reasonable power system with various interconnections such as AC, AC/DC link and AC/DC with PLL dynamics. A series form of proportional-integral-derivative (PID) namely proportional gain cascaded with integral and double-derivative (PI+DD+) controller is employed as secondary controller in each control areas for robust AGC to carry out market transactions under deregulated environment. Exploring the system with different type of interconnections infer that proper tuning of PLL function parameters may synchronise the grid better than without employing PLL. The performance of PI+DD+ controller along with optimum PLL gains commensurate with wide variations in governor, turbine, fuel and compressor discharge time constant of gas turbine plant.
