Non-native insects are often inconspicuous organisms that can negatively impact the economy, biodiversity, and public health. Field crickets (Orthoptera: Gryllidae: Gryllinae) have historically been used as a food source for livestock, pets, and humans—a practice that likely facilitated the spread of certain species into urban centers and non-native habitats. Although rarely cited as invasive, species like Gryllodes sigillatus and Gryllodes supplicans are now widely distributed across diverse environments. Based on recent fieldwork in Brazil, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Colombia, and Ecuador, we conducted morphological and acoustic analyses that confirmed the presence of G. sigillatus in all five countries and documented the first record of G. supplicans in Brazil. We also reassigned Gryllodes flavispina to Loxoblemmus , limiting Gryllodes to two recognized species. This prompted a reassessment of diagnostic traits and the development of global distribution models. Our findings revealed consistent acoustic and morphological differences between the species, facilitating future detection and monitoring. Biogeographic models predict a broad potential distribution and multiple zones of sympatry. Although Gryllodes species are proposed as alternative food, little is known about their ecological impacts if released or escaped into natural ecosystems. Further studies should assess the consequences of their establishment in non-native regions.

    Ecology and Evolution, 2025
Equity in scientific publishing requires removing financial barriers, structural transformation, and inclusive practices that empower researchers from historically marginalized regions. Here, we reflect on recent Wiley's initiatives supporting Brazilian researchers to integrate into the international publishing ecosystem, including discounted rates for open‐access article processing charges, the Wiley‐CAPES transformative agreement, and in‐country capacity‐building events. While some challenges persist, such as linguistic barriers and funding access, we underscore the importance of meaningful local engagement and the coordinated actions among publishers and funding agencies that are supporting a more equitable publishing ecosystem.
  • New species, redescriptions, and new records of Hygronemobius Hebard, 1913 (Orthoptera: Trigonidiidae) from Brazil
LUIZ AUGUSTO PADILHA SANTOS, OSCAR J. CADENA-CASTAÑEDA, BEATRIZ HARUMI KONDO OYA, JOSÉ ANTÔNIO MARIN FERNANDES, GUSTAVO COSTA TAVARES
    Zootaxa, 2025
Hygronemobius Hebard, 1913 is a genus of nemobine crickets with a wide distribution in the Neotropical region, but also found in southern North America, typically inhabiting the leaf litter. They are small size crickets with the hind tibia bearing three dorsal spurs dorsally on each margin and three external and two internal apical spurs; male genitalia with a very broad ectophallic fold, forming a distinct ventral half-disc, with two ventrally directed pseudepiphallic lobes and a small dorsal cavity. Currently, 30 species are considered valid, of which nine are officially recorded in Brazil. Therefore, this work aims to describe two new species of Hygronemobius found in Brazil. The species were collected in the Melgaço and Juruti municipalities in Pará State. Additionally, Hygronemobius amoenus Chopard, 1920 and Hygronemobius nigrofasciatus Desutter-Grandollas, 1993 are being redescribed, and their distribution expanded to Brazil. Finally, Hygronemobius ottei n. nom. is proposed as a new name for Hygronemobius elegans (Otte, 2006) (Costa Rica) as it is a homonym of Hygronemobius elegans Desutter-Grandcolas, 1993 (Peru).

    Zootaxa, 2025
In this contribution to the study of pygmy grasshoppers, the description of the female of Metrodora rana Bolívar, 1887 is provided as well as the redescription of the male with additional characters to those included in its original description. The occurrence in the Colombian and Brazilian Amazon is recorded for the first time, and additional iNaturalist records from Peru and Brazil are also presented. The importance of the study of M. rana for the foundations of the classification of the subfamily Metrodorinae is discussed. Additionally, Metrodora ala Kasalo & Skejo, 2025 syn. nov. is synonymized under Hebardidora kasaloi Cadena-Castañeda & Tavares, 2025, and Metrodora mollilobata Kasalo & Skejo, 2025 syn. nov. under Hebardidora harroweri (Hebard, 1924).
  • Studies on pygmy grasshoppers: On the current Metrodorinae sensu lato classification (Orthoptera: Tetrigidae) with emphasis on American and Malagasy taxa

    Zootaxa, 2025
In this contribution to the study of pygmy grasshoppers, we have focused on the subfamily Metrodorinae, making a preliminary differentiation into Metrodorinae s. str., which groups the American taxa, and Metrodorinae s. l., which currently includes taxa from the Old World. The review of the metrodorines focused on taxa from America, Madagascar and adjacent islands, such as the Seychelles and Mascarene Islands. The subfamily Metrodorinae s. str. was delimited, facilitating its differentiation from other subfamilies of Tetrigidae, among which there have historically been difficulties in delimiting and placing some taxa with seemingly intermediate characters. Two new subfamilies closely related to Metrodorinae are described: Guntheritettiginae subfam. nov. (from Madagascar) and Hildegardiinae subfam. nov. (from Mauritius and Reunion). Seven new tribes are established: Metopomystrini trib. nov., Garciaitettigini trib. nov., Otumbini trib. nov. (Metrodorinae s. str.), Pterotettigini trib. nov. (Metrodorinae s. l.), Guntheritettigini trib. nov. and Tumbrinckitettigini trib. nov. (Guntheritettiginae), and Hildegardiini trib. nov. (Hildegardiinae). The tribe Metrodorini is divided into three subtribes: Metrodorina stat. nov., Miriatrina nom. resurr. et stat. nov. and Mucrotettigina nom. resurr. et stat. nov. Twelve new genera are described: Hebardidora gen. nov., Bolivaridora gen. nov., Morseidora gen. nov., Rehniatra gen. nov., Grantiatra gen. nov., Devrieseium gen. nov., Stalitettix gen. nov., Garciaitettix gen. nov., Brunneritettix gen. nov., Guntheritettix gen. nov., Tumbrinckitettix gen. nov., and Storozhenkoium gen. nov. Eleven new species are also described: Platytettix pilosus sp. nov., Cota caxiuana sp. nov., Hebardidora kasaloi sp. nov., Bolivaridora paraensis sp. nov., B. tani sp. nov., B. parisae sp. nov., B. cipolai sp. nov., Grantiatra douglasi sp. nov., Metopomystrum ankeri sp. nov., Garciaitettix mirabilis sp. nov. and Otumba dengi sp. nov. are described. The following new combinations are proposed: Allotettix incomptum (Hebard, 1924), comb. nov., Devrieseium concinnum (Bolívar, 1887), comb. nov., Stalitettix spinifrons (Stål, 1861), comb. nov. (transferred from Otumba), Platytettix gibbosulus (Walker, 1871), comb. nov. (transferred from Amorphopus), Hebardidora harroweri (Hebard, 1924), comb. nov., Hebardidora panamae (Hebard, 1924), comb. nov., Bolivaridora lutosa (Bolívar, 1887), comb. nov., Morseidora acuta (Günther, 1939), comb. nov. (transferred from Metrodora), Rehniatra brevifastigiata (Cadena-Castañeda & Cardona, 2015), comb. nov. (transferred from Miriatra), Brunneritettix fuscipennis (Bruner, 1910), comb. nov. (transferred from Allotettix), Notocerus devriesei (Skejo, Medak, Pavlović, Kitonić, Miko & Franjević, 2020), comb. nov. (transferred from Holocerus), Guntheritettix formidabilis (Günther, 1974), comb. nov. (transferred from Notocerus), Tumbrinckitettix impennis (Günther, 1939), comb. nov. (transferred from Cryptotettix), Storozhenkoium pupula (Bolívar, 1912), comb. nov., Storozhenkoium nymphula (Bolívar, 1912), comb. nov. (transferred from Amphinotus), and Pseudamphinotus punctatus (Chopard, 1958), comb. nov. (transferred from Isandrus). New synonymy is proposed: Danielatettix caudatus (Saussure, 1861) = Allotettix chapadensis Bruner, 1910 syn. nov.; Otumba scapularis Morse, 1900 = Scabrotettix biolleyi Bolívar, 1909 syn. nov.; Pterotettix belphegor (Serville, 1838) = Pterotettix humilis Günther, 1939 syn. nov. = Pterotettix alluaudi Günther, 1939 syn. nov. The following taxa had their status or original combinations restored: Tylotettix Morse, 1900, stat. resurr., Platytettix Hancock, 1906 stat. resurr. (both previously synonymized under Metrodora), Tetticerus Hancock, 1900, stat. resurr. (previously synonymized under Pterotettix), Tylotettix sinuata Morse, 1900 comb. resurr., T. simplex Hebard, 1924 comb. resurr., T. pygmaea Roberts, 1937 comb. resurr., Platytettix reticulatus Hancock, 1906 comb. resurr., P. arcuatus Bruner, 1920 comb. resurr., P. gibbinotus Bruner, 1910 comb. resurr., P. uniformis Bruner, 1910 comb. resurr., and Tetticerus bigibbosus Hancock, 1900 comb. resurr. A neotype was selected for Devrieseium concinnum as well as the lectotypes and paralectotypes for the nine species: Miriatra boliviana Günther, 1939, Miriatra producta (Bolívar, 1887), Otumba amazonica (Bolívar, 1887), Otumba marcapata Hancock, 1907, Otumba quadrata Hancock, 1907, Tumbrinckitettix impennis, Pterotettix andrei Bolívar, 1887, Storozhenkoium pupula, and Storozhenkoium nymphula. The genera Allotettix Hancock, 1899, Crimisus Bolívar, 1887, Cotys Bolívar, 1887, Scabrotettix Hancock, 1907, and Crimisodes Hebard, 1932 are moved to the subfamily Tetriginae, as they fit the characteristics of this subfamily and do not comply with the new definition of Metrodorinae s. str. Keys are provided for differentiating tribes, subtribes, genera, and most species studied. The changes and other taxonomic acts are justified and reflected in two checklists for easy understanding of the changes provided in this contribution. Maps and images of most type specimens and field specimens are also provided, with much of the data included from the identification of museum specimens, literature, and the iNaturalist platform, which provides recent data on some species, many of which have never been seen in their natural habitat, making it an interesting and important tool for monitoring diversity. Finally, the status of Metrodorinae and derived taxa is discussed, reviewing the different statuses and taxonomic concepts of this group of tetrigids, as well as their distribution ranges and habitats in which they inhabit.
  • A new genus of long-legged cricket Luzarina (Orthoptera: Phalangopsidae) from the Brazilian Amazon Rainforest
LIANDERSON F. FRANCO, JOSÉ ANTÔNIO M. FERNANDES, GUSTAVO C. TAVARES
Anais Da Academia Brasileira De Ciencias, 2025
In the neotropical region, the subtribe Luzarina is the most representative within Phalangopsini, currently with 128 valid species distributed in 49 genera (Cigliano et al. 2025). In this contribution, a new genus and species, Parapalpigera amazonica gen. et sp. nov., is described based on specimens collected in Northern Brazil, in the Amazon rainforest. The genus is closely related to Melanotes Desutter-Grandcolas, 1993 and Palpigera Hebard, 1928, but it can be distinguished by the following combination of characteristics: reduced tegmina without stridulatory apparatus; absent tympanum; very elongated and thin palps; shape of the endophallus sclerite; bifid endophallus apodeme; and shape of the female copulatory papilla.
  • On the Myanmar amber field-crickets described as “transitional” mole crickets (Orthoptera: Gryllidea)
OSCAR J. CADENA-CASTAÑEDA, GUSTAVO COSTA TAVARES, TIAN-HAO HU, ZHU-QING HE
    Zootaxa, 2024
Two recent contributions on amber crickets from Myanmar are analyzed and contrasted. The first contribution was published by Cadena-Castañeda et al. (2023), and the second by Gu et al. (2024). The positions of both contributions are compared, and the different results are discussed in terms of morphology, phylogeny, and taxonomy. The following nomenclatural acts are proposed: at the suprageneric level, the family †Pseudogryllotalpidae Gu, Yuan & Ma, 2024 syn. nov. is synonymized under the subtribe †Pherodactylina Cadena-Castañeda & He, 2023 (Sclerogryllini), maintaining its placement in the family Gryllidae. At the genus level, †Pseudogryllotalpa Gu, Yuan & Ma, 2024 syn. nov., †Unidigitus Gu, Yuan & Yue, 2024 syn. nov., and †Petilus Gu, Yuan & Ma, 2024 syn. nov. are synonymized under †Pherodactylus Poinar, Su & Brown, 2020. Similarly, the synonymy of †Tresdigitus Xu, Fang & Wang, 2020 with †Pherodactylus is confirmed. †Chunxiania Xu, Wang & Fang, 2022 is revalidated, now including only one species †Chunxiania fania Xu, Wang & Fang, 2022. At the species level, †Pseudogryllotalpa scalprata Gu, Yuan & Ma, 2024 syn. nov., †Petilus zhengi Gu, Yuan & Ma, 2024 syn. nov., and †Unidigitus longialatus Gu, Yuan & Yue, 2024 syn. nov. are considered synonyms of †Pherodactylus micromorphus Poinar, Su & Brown, 2020, while †Chunxiania fascia Gu, Yuan & Ma, 2024 syn. nov. is synonymized under †Chunxiania fania Xu, Wang & Fang, 2022. Additionally, the synonymy of †Tresdigitus gracilis Jiang, Xu, Jarzembowski & Xiao, 2022 under †Pherodactylus rectanguli (Xu, Fang & Wang, 2020) is corroborated. These synonymies were thoroughly justified, reducing the number of species from eight to three and genera from six to two. The other taxa represent different sexes or developmental stages of the three recognized species. The studied taxa are considered field crickets with notable adaptations to subterranean life compared to other Gryllidae, refuting their classification as an independent family related to Gryllotalpoidea.
  • New species and records of Zebragryllus Desutter-Grandcolas & Cadena-Castañeda, 2014 (Orthoptera: Gryllidae: Gryllinae) from the Brazilian Amazon rainforest

    European Journal of Taxonomy, 2024
Zebragryllus Desutter-Grandcolas & Cadena-Castañeda, 2014 is a Neotropical genus of field crickets that inhabits the leaf litter of the Amazon rainforest. The genus has six species and is characterized by the distinct ‘zebra’ pattern displayed by some of them. The species are recorded in French Guiana, Peru, and Colombia. Here, we describe two new species of the genus from the Brazilian Amazon rainforest, the first record of the genus for Brazil. We expand the records of Z. guianensis Desutter-Grandcolas, 2014 and Z. nouragui Desutter-Grandcolas, 2014 to Brazil. We also describe but do not name two females corresponding to two new species, provide an up-to-date key for species of Zebragryllus, and discuss the potential distribution for the genus.
