  • Influence of blood groups on maximum oxygen consumption and explosive power among high-level basketball players in Palestine
Abdelnaser Qadumi, Iyad Yousef, Ali Qadoume
    Sport Tk, 2026
The study aimed to identify the influence of blood groups on maximum oxygen consumption (VO2max) and explosive power in high-level basketball players in Palestine. The researchers used a descriptive-analytical approach. The study was conducted on a healthy random sample of 44 players, whose age, height, and body mass were 25.81 ± 5.79 years, 187.79 ± 9.52 cm, and 89.97 ± 15.61 kg, respectively. The players were tested using the vertical jump test and the Cooper 12-minute run test. The results of the study revealed that the mean explosive power was 47.27 cm, and the mean maximum oxygen consumption (VO2max) was 42.04 mL/kg/min. In addition, blood group had a statistically significant effect on both maximum oxygen consumption and explosive power, with blood type B showing higher explosive power and blood type O showing higher VO2max (p < 0.05). Blood group appears to influence physiological performance in high-level basketball players, with blood type O associated with higher aerobic capacity (VO2max) and blood type B associated with greater explosive power. These findings suggest that blood type may be a factor to consider in athlete assessment and training.
  • An Accurate Classification for Human Sport Activity Recognition from Sensor Data Using Hybrid Machine Learning Models
Sana M. Liftawi, Iyad A. Yousef, Mahmoud W. Kaied
Journal of Advanced Research in Applied Sciences and Engineering Technology, 2025
The significance of human sports activities recognition (HSAR) in many computing applications, including sports analytics, smart surroundings, and healthcare monitoring is huge. The current use of vision sensors for HSAR is a difficult task due to the intricate movements involved in sports and fitness workouts, as well as fluctuations in illumination conditions. Therefore, a comprehensive review of machine learning algorithms (such as XGBoost, Random Forest (RF), Decision Trees (DT), and K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN)) and their usage for human sports activities classification based on sensor data called ML-HSAR is presented in this article. A dataset containing 19 different human activities gathered from 8 different people through different types of sensors was used for this work; the dataset contains activities like sitting and standing, as well as other activities that require serious movements, such as running, cycling, and playing basketball. This study primarily aims to determine the performance of the considered ML models in accurately classifying these activities found in the dataset. The training of the algorithms and the subsequent evaluation were done on the segmented sensor data, effectively leveraging the dataset’s temporal aspect. In addition to the presented results for each of these algorithms, the limitations of each algorithm and their strengths in handling the complexities involved in HSAR were also presented. The contribution of this analysis is towards the understanding of the most appropriate ML models for HSAR tasks; it also offers valuable insights for future research and practical applications.

  • Impact of foreign players’ participation in the Palestinian basketball league on team cohesion from the perspective of local players

    Frontiers in Psychology, 2025
ObjectiveThe purpose of this paper is to assess the impact of foreign players’ participation in the Palestinian Basketball League on team cohesion from the perspective of local players.MethodsUsing a descriptive-analytical method, the researchers developed a cohesion measurement tool with three dimensions: psychological, social, and team belonging. The tool comprised 30 items, equally distributed across the dimensions, based on player status, experience, and position. The study surveyed 84 players aged between 18 and 38 in the Palestinian Basketball League.ResultsThe findings revealed that cohesion was rated as moderate (mean = 3.32), with higher scores in team affiliation (3.50) compared to psychological cohesion (3.21). Experience-based differences showed that players with less than 5 years and more than 10 years of experience exhibited higher cohesion levels compared to those with 6–10 years. Positional differences favored forwards and guards. Regarding player status, reserve players demonstrated higher cohesion in the psychological and team belonging dimensions, although no significant differences were found in the social dimension.ConclusionThe study concludes that foreign players have a positive impact on team cohesion, and it was rated as moderate with higher scores in team affiliation compared to psychological cohesion. The researchers recommend careful selection of foreign players to enhance team cohesion and stability. This study contributes to the understanding of foreign players’ role in fostering team dynamics and performance in the Palestinian Basketball League, expanding the literature on the topic. This study is original and valuable, as there has been almost no previous research that has measured and evaluated the impact of foreign players’ participation in the Palestinian basketball league on team cohesion from the perspective of local players.
  • Impact of flipped classroom strategy and learning on the acquisition of basic skills among students in the basketball 1 course at Birzeit University
Iyad Yousef, Mahmoud Kayed, Sana Liftawi, Shahd Hamdan, Jamal Alnuaimi, et al.
Frontiers in Sports and Active Living, 2025
Introduction and research question The aim of this study is to examine the impact of the flipped classroom strategy and learning through play on the acquisition of basic skills among students in the Basketball 1 course at Birzeit University. Theoretical framework Theoretically, this study contributes to the literature on integrating technology in sports education, opening new avenues for understanding its impact on motor skill development. It also enriches the scientific understanding of modern educational strategies, such as flipped classrooms and gamified learning, and provides valuable data to guide the development of future educational programs. Methods An experimental method was employed, with a sample of 66 male and female students divided into three equal groups of 22 students each. These included a control group taught using the traditional method, the first experimental group, which utilized the flipped classroom strategy, and the second experimental group, which applied the learning-through-play strategy. Data analysis was conducted using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). Results The key findings revealed statistically significant differences favoring the flipped classroom strategy, followed by the learning-through-play strategy, for all basketball skills under investigation: chest pass, jump shot, lay-up shot, and dribbling. This study recommends incorporating both the flipped classroom and learning-through-play strategies in teaching fundamental basketball skills in the Basketball 1 course. To gather experimental data for analysis, the researchers observed the participants once a week. Implications The findings suggest several significant implications: Projective learning is the second-best approach in the flipped classroom, second only to the traditional flipped classroom technique. Consequently, the flipped classroom approach is the recommended method for integrating physical education, particularly basketball, into Palestinian institutions and universities. Discussion and conclusion This study contributes to filling research gaps in the literature by presenting a comprehensive approach that combines two modern strategies, namely, flipped learning and game learning, to improve fundamental motor skills in basketball, with a particular focus on the psychological and social effects, as well as the long-term impact of these strategies. This study expands the application of the flipped classroom approach in the field of motor skills in basketball, enriching the relevant literature on the flipped classroom mode.

The purpose of this research is to determine the effect of house isolation on the Palestinian people's lifestyles, mental health (MW), and physical activity during the COVID-19 pandemic (PA). The Global Health Guidelines 5 and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, as well as the Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) (PSQI) (PSQI), were used to collect demographic data. To collect data from all staff and students in Palestinian universities, including faculty and staff, as well as students, a non-discriminatory approach to community sampling was used, consisting of 360 research participants. According to the statistics, men are more likely than women to be in a good emotional state. By and large, people with improved mental states reported improved sleep quality and overall health. Increased physical activity (i.e. 17.33.6) was connected with improved mental health compared to average physical activity (i.e. 13.74.2). It has been proven that there is a relationship between a mental state variable and the amount of regular daily activity. Physical activity improves mental health. Additionally, physical exercise was the strongest predictor of mental health ratings.
