The Rhinella marina Group in the Pampa Biome of South America: Spatiotemporal Records, Citizen Science, and Land Use/Cover Changes Herpetological Conservation and Biology, 2026
The influence of environmental factors on dorsal coloration patterns in a neotropical tree frog Luísa Nunes Lermen, Daniel Loebmann Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2026 Animal coloration is a multifunctional trait shaped by the interplay of environmental pressures and ecological functions such as thermoregulation, predator avoidance, and social signalling. In ectotherms such as amphibians, dorsal coloration may be especially sensitive to local microclimatic conditions and habitat structure. This study investigated how the environmental variables of temperature, precipitation, and habitat type influence dorsal colour traits in the Neotropical treefrog Dendropsophus minutus, a widely distributed generalist species. Coloration was quantified in situ through standardized photography and posterior image analysis, measuring hue, saturation, and brightness. Our results revealed that brightness increased significantly with ambient temperature, particularly in open habitats. Saturation exhibited a complex pattern, modulated by an interaction between habitat and precipitation: under wet conditions, grassland individuals showed higher saturation than those in forests, and saturation generally decreased with increasing temperature. Hue remained unaffected by any of the evaluated variables. These findings emphasize the ecological relevance of distinct colour components, showing that brightness and saturation respond differently to environmental gradients. Moreover, the study highlights the potential vulnerability of amphibian colour phenotypes to habitat alteration and climate change, as changes in canopy cover, rainfall regimes, and thermal environments may disrupt the selective pressures maintaining functional coloration.
Protecting stable biological nomenclatural systems enables universal communication: A collective international appeal Pedro Jiménez-Mejías, Saúl Manzano, Vinita Gowda, Frank-Thorsten Krell, Mei-Ying Lin, et al. Bioscience, 2024 The fundamental value of universal nomenclatural systems in biology is that they enable unambiguous scientific communication. However, the stability of these systems is threatened by recent discussions asking for a fairer nomenclature, raising the possibility of bulk revision processes for “inappropriate” names. It is evident that such proposals come from very deep feelings, but we show how they can irreparably damage the foundation of biological communication and, in turn, the sciences that depend on it. There are four essential consequences of objective codes of nomenclature: universality, stability, neutrality, and transculturality. These codes provide fair and impartial guides to the principles governing biological nomenclature and allow unambiguous universal communication in biology. Accordingly, no subjective proposals should be allowed to undermine them.
TROPHIC ECOLOGY OF POST-METAMORPHIC Dendropsophus minutus (PETERS, 1872) IN COASTAL WETLANDS OF SOUTHERN BRAZIL (HYLIDAE: DENDROPSOPHINI) Sônia Huckembeck, Raúl Maneyro, Daniel Loebmann, Alexandre Miranda Garcia Russian Journal of Herpetology, 2024 Dendropsophus minutus is a hylid widely distributed in the Neotropics. Although this species is classified as «least concern», some populations are being affected by the advance of various anthropic activities. Despite previous studies on the biology of the species, some aspects of its trophic ecology are still unknown. We used stomach content analysis (SCA) and stable isotope analysis (SIA) to identify diet, trophic position and the primary food sources and preys that support a post-metamorphic population of D. minutus in the coastal plain of extreme southern Brazil. SCA revealed that Diptera (%PSIRI = 10.16), Hemiptera (%PSIRI = 5.83), and Araneae (%PSIRI = = 1.46) were present in the diet. The primary-producers-based mixing model indicated POM (particulate organic matter) as the main basal carbon source sustaining the analyzed specimens; whereas the prey-based mixing model showed that Hemiptera is the main resource assimilated by the species. Mean trophic position was 2.71, ranging between 2.52 and 2.91.

A tale of two bellies: systematics of the oval frogs (Anura: Microhylidae: Elachistocleis) Gabriel Novaes-e-Fagundes, Mariana L Lyra, Vinicius S A Loredam, Thiago R Carvalho, Célio F B Haddad, et al. Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2023 Oval frogs (Elachistocleis) have a broad geographic distribution covering nearly all of South America and parts of Central America. They also have a large inter- and intraspecific variation of the few morphological characters commonly used as diagnostic traits among species of the genus. Based on molecular data, we provide the most complete phylogeny of Elachistocleis to date, and explore its genetic diversity using distance-based and tree-based methods for putative species delimitation. Our results show that at least two of the most relevant traditional characters used in the taxonomy of this group (belly pattern and dorsal median white line) carry less phylogenetic information than previously thought. Based on our results, we propose some synonymizations and some candidate new species. This study is a first major step in disentangling the current systematics of Elachistocleis. Yet, a comprehensive review of morphological data is needed before any new species descriptions can be properly made.
