    IEEE Sensors Journal, 2023
A selective electrochemical platform for metronidazole was developed by modification of a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) with N,S-doped carbon dots (N,S-CDs) and amine-grafted graphene oxide (GONH2) nanohybrid. After modification of graphene oxide with (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane, the resulting GONH2 was covalently functionalized with N,S-CDs by an easy and inexpensive hydrothermal method. To achieve this purpose, GONH2, citric acid, and thiourea were used as the precursors. For the functionalization of GONH2 with N,S-CDs, thiourea was used as a source of N and S atoms in the hydrothermal method. The N,S-CDs/GONH2 were utilized for the GCE modification that was evaluated by spectroscopic and microscopic methods. The electrochemical techniques were then used for the measurement of metronidazole. The GCE/N,S-CDs/GONH2 provided a higher peak current than the bare GCE or GCE/GONH2 for the electroreduction of metronidazole originated from the synergetic role of the GONH2 and N,S-CDs, and the expanded surface area. The detection limit obtained for metronidazole in the concentration span of 0.05– $100 ~\\mu \\text{m}$ was equal to 10 nm. In addition to good reproducibility and stability, the GCE/N,S-CDs/GONH2 accurately measure metronidazole in natural specimens with a recovery percentage of 90%–97%.
  • A Modified Electrochemical Sensor Based on N,S-Doped Carbon Dots/Carbon Nanotube-Poly(Amidoamine) Dendrimer Hybrids for Imatinib Mesylate Determination

    Biosensors, 2023
Imatinib mesylate, an anticancer drug, is prescribed to treat gastrointestinal stromal tumors and chronic myelogenous leukemia. A hybrid nanocomposite of N,S-doped carbon dots/carbon nanotube-poly(amidoamine) dendrimer (N,S-CDs/CNTD) was successfully synthesized and used as a significant modifier to design a new and highly selective electrochemical sensor for the determination of imatinib mesylate. A rigorous study with electrochemical techniques, such as cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry, was performed to elucidate the electrocatalytic properties of the as-prepared nanocomposite and the preparation procedure of the modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE). A higher oxidation peak current was generated for the imatinib mesylate on a N,S-CDs/CNTD/GCE surface compared to the GCE and CNTD/GCE. The N,S-CDs/CNTD/GCE showed a linear relationship between the concentration and oxidation peak current of the imatinib mesylate in 0.01–100 μM, with a detection limit of 3 nM. Finally, the imatinib mesylate’s quantification in blood-serum samples was successfully performed. The N,S-CDs/CNTD/GCE’s reproducibility and stability were indeed excellent.

  • Preparation of Reinforced poly (BisGMA-UDMA) Graphene-Based Nanocomposites Via Moderate in Situ SET-LRP

Journal of Macromolecular Science Part A Pure and Applied Chemistry, 2018
In the present study, cross-linked poly (dimethacrylate- urethane dimethacrylate) [poly (BisGMA-UDMA)] functionalized-graphene oxide nanosheets were prepared via single-electron transfer living radical polymerization (SET-LRP) using the ‘grafting from’ strategy, under mild conditions. This method first involves the covalent attachment of Br-containing groups onto the surface of grapheme sheets to give the initiating-groups-containing graphene (G-Br). After that, the succeeding SET-LRP polymerization in DMSO in the presence of a Cu wire/Me6TREN catalytic system at room temperature leads to the grafting of poly (BisGMA-UDMA) chains onto the graphene surface. The resulting graphene-poly (dimethacrylate- urethane dimethacrylate) (G-PDMA-UDMA) nanocomposites were characterized using FT-IR, XRD, DSC, AFM, FE-SEM, and TEM analysis techniques. It was proved that polymer chains were successfully introduced to the surface of the graphene planes. After grafting with poly (BisGMA-UDMA), the dispersibility of the modified GO sheets significantly improved. When compared to G-PDMA, the resulting G-PDMA-UDMA nanocomposite revealed around 75%, 97%, and 65%, increase in compressive strength, Young's modulus and toughness, respectively. Such smart graphene-based nanocomposites can be used as promising biomaterials in orthopaedic and dental applications with the desired mechanical properties.
