  • Urban Adaptation to Climate Change: Climate Refuge Networks as a Strategy to Mitigate Thermal Stress
    Carmen Díaz-López, Rubén Mora-Esteban, Francisco Conejo-Arrabal, Juan Marcos Castro-Bonaño
    Urban Science, 2026
Urban areas face rising risks from extreme heat due to climate change, intensifying thermal stress and exacerbating social inequalities. Urban climate refuges—cool, accessible indoor and outdoor public spaces that maintain their ordinary functions—are increasingly adopted as a local adaptation measure to protect vulnerable populations during heat events. This study aims to develop and test a SWOT–CAME analytical framework to evaluate and compare the maturity, equity, and implementation logic of urban climate refuge networks in three European cities with contrasting climates and governance traditions: Barcelona, Amsterdam, and Copenhagen. A qualitative multiple-case design is combined with a transparent indicator set (coverage, accessibility, and typology mix) derived from official municipal sources and planning documents. Results show differentiated pathways: Barcelona represents an institutionalized network model; Amsterdam illustrates an emerging coordinated public-health approach; and Copenhagen reflects an ecosystem-based orientation where green–blue infrastructure provides substantial passive cooling capacity but requires clearer heat-specific operational protocols. The discussion highlights the need for hybrid adaptation strategies that combine nature-based solutions with operational governance and targeted support for vulnerable groups. The paper concludes with a transferable framework for cities seeking to integrate climate refuges into resilience and climate-justice agendas.

  • Urban socio-ecosystem renewal: an ecosystem services assessment approach

International Journal of Environmental Science and Technology, 2024
Using a novel approach based on the urban ecosystem services approach, this research explores the relation between socio-economic, architectonic and ecological factors in urban renewal processes. This deductive conceptual approach is based on the definition of an urban diagnosis and intervention model based on the concept of urban socio-ecosystemic services. This conceptual approach is applied to three research cases in Andalusia (Spain) neighbourhoods linked to participatory urban renewal processes. A model is inductively defined from these analysed case studies: the socio-ecosystemic services model, based on the conceptual frame, the development of particular instruments and the definition of a participatory methodological strategy. The results obtained in these urban workshops show that the socio-ecosystem model better integrates the relationships between the architectural, socio-economic and ecological dimensions in addressing the need for urban services and infrastructure and the quality of life in neighbourhoods. Citizens can formulate their needs and perceptions of the neighbourhood beyond traditional quantitative variables (i.e. number of car parks, average size of dwellings, population density, etc.), incorporating aspects such as urban landscape, air quality, urban noise, shaded rest areas and children’s spaces. All these perceptions are collected and transformed into proposals for neighbourhood improvement, which are assessed and prioritized by the citizens. Together with participatory processes, this approach can be considered as the key to success in urban renewal strategies in neighbourhoods. However, it is necessary to develop indicators and metrics of the relationships between the socio-economic and ecological dimensions that allow a more integrated study of the model at different urban scales.
  • Millennial consumer preferences in social commerce web design
    Rafael Anaya-Sánchez, Juan Castro-Bonaño, Eloy González-Badía
Revista Brasileira De Gestao De Negocios, 2020
Purpose – Considering the context in which s ocial c ommerce has changed the way consumers search for information and share experiences, the objective of this study is to understand how three factors of web design (usability, functionality , and sociability) influence consumers’ cognitive and affective assessments and affect their intention to buy. Design/methodology/approach – Using the PLS technique on a sample of 230 millennials who are regular s ocial c ommerce users, this study is adapted to the social context of the existing literature on website quality, as well as theories of social learning and consumer intention to buy. Findings – We used the results to compare the study’s 9 hypotheses, thereby linking variables of web design and socialization in e-commerce environments with components of social learning theory. Originality/value – This article expands the understanding of the influence of design in social network website environments on consumer assessments and, consequently, their intention to buy, highlighting the importance of design for affective assessments. It also provides relevant information to professionals on how to design their websites to improve consumer purchase attitudes and behaviors, allowing them to focus on how to improve the user experience through web design within the context of continuously changing devices and consumer preferences.
