Oral Health Literacy and Its Impact on Oral Health Promotion Behaviors in Peruvian Adults: A Multidimensional Assessment Teresa Angélica Evaristo-Chiyong, Manuel Antonio Mattos-Vela, Martha Cecilia Rodríguez-Vargas, Dora Noelia Gómez-Meza, Victor Fernando Lamas-Lara, et al. Journal of International Society of Preventive and Community Dentistry, 2025 A bstract Aim: To evaluate oral health literacy and its impact on oral health promotion behaviors in Peruvian adults, considering their sociodemographic characteristics. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 2023 with 669 adults residing in Metropolitan Lima, Peru. Oral health literacy was assessed using the condensed, validated Peruvian Spanish version of the Health Literacy in Dentistry (HeLD-14) instrument. A structured questionnaire was used to gather data on sociodemographic characteristics and self-reported oral health behaviors. The association between variables was analyzed using Poisson regression with robust variance to estimate prevalence ratios. Results: The final sample’s mean oral health literacy score was 47.16, indicating an overall elevated level. Statistically significant differences were noted by age, with adults aged 18–30 having the highest scores (mean = 48.10; P < 0.05), and by education level, with participants having technical education scoring highest (mean = 49.02; P < 0.05). Tooth pain was the most frequently reported reason for dental visits (51.27%). Significant associations were found between specific literacy dimensions and behaviors: the “support” dimension was linked to brushing at least twice daily (adjusted PR = 1.02); the “access” dimension was associated with using fluoridated toothpaste (adjusted PR = 1.07); and the “comprehension” dimension was associated with the use of other oral hygiene accessories (adjusted PR = 1.09). Conclusion: A significant but low-impact association was identified between oral health literacy and key promotion behaviors, including toothbrushing, the use of fluoride toothpaste, and other hygiene accessories. This effect is considered minimal at an individual clinical level but may be potentially relevant for broader public health initiatives at the population level.
Validation of Health Literacy in Dentistry (HeLD-14) in Peruvian Adults: A Cross-Sectional Study Teresa A. Evaristo-Chiyong, Manuel A. Mattos-Vela, Dora N. Gómez-Meza, Victor F. Lamas-Lara, Martha C. Rodríguez-Vargas, et al. Journal of International Society of Preventive and Community Dentistry, 2025 Aim: The Health Literacy in Dentistry (HeLD)-14 instrument was developed as a concise tool for assessing oral health literacy. However, its psychometric properties have not been validated in the Peruvian context. This study aims to adapt and validate the short version of the HeLD-14 instrument for the Peruvian adult population. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 300 adults aged 18–83 years from three healthcare centers in Lima, Peru. The HeLD-14 was translated, back-translated, and piloted to ensure clarity. Psychometric properties were assessed using exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), and structural equation modeling (SEM). Internal consistency was measured using Cronbach α and y Omega de McDonald. The test–retest reliability was evaluated in a subsample of 34 participants with a 15-day interval. Data were analyzed using R v4.4.1 and AMOS 24.0. Results: The HeLD-14 demonstrated strong psychometric properties. The Kaiser–Meyer–Olkin value was 0.804, and Bartlett’s test of sphericity was significant (χ 2 = 3152; P < 0.001). Cronbach α for internal consistency was 0.913. The test–retest reliability showed a moderate correlation (ρ = 0.666; P < 0.001). CFA results confirmed the multidimensional structure of the instrument, with all factor loadings exceeding 0.40 and P value < 0.001. SEM indicated strong and significant relationships between oral health literacy and its seven dimensions (standardized loadings: 0.33–0.69). Conclusion: The HeLD-14 instrument is a valid and reliable tool for assessing oral health literacy in Peruvian adults. Its simplicity and robustness make it suitable for application in research and public healthcare interventions. Future studies should explore its application in diverse Peruvian populations and its predictive value for oral health outcomes.
Validity and reliability of a smartphone-based photographic method for detection of dental caries in adults for use in teledentistry Victor F. Lamas-Lara, Manuel A. Mattos-Vela, Teresa A. Evaristo-Chiyong, Maria Eugenia Guerrero, Juan F. Jiménez-Yano, et al. Frontiers in Oral Health, 2025 IntroductionWith the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic, the role of teledentistry increased its need for implementation. In this sense, the study aimed to validate a smartphone-based remote photographic method for diagnosing dental caries in adults attending a polyclinic in Lima, Peru.MethodsA cross-sectional, descriptive research was conducted; 87 patients were selected, and 2020 teeth were evaluated. Each participant underwent a clinical diagnosis of dental caries by two trained and calibrated dentists, considering the diagnostic criteria of the WHO; during the same visit, after the clinical examination, a family member of the patient was instructed to take a photographic record with a cell phone, through a video. Five photographs of the dental arches were recorded, where the centering of images, resolution, and visualization of all the teeth were evaluated. The photographic evaluation was performed by two independent evaluators blinded to the visual evaluation performed, following the same criteria as the clinical visual evaluation. For the data analysis, Cohen's kappa index was determined for interexaminer reliability; sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values were obtained.ResultsOverall, high sensitivity: 90.19% [Interquartile 95% (CI): 88.23–92.16]; and specificity: 95.15% (95% CI: 93.83–96.47). The interexaminer agreement was almost perfect, with a kappa of 0.935 and 0.974 for clinical and photographic evaluation, respectively.ConclusionsIt is concluded that the photographic method using a smartphone has demonstrated a satisfactory level of caries detection in adults.

Quality of survey-based study reports in dentistry Manuel Antonio Mattos-Vela, Teresa Angélica Evaristo-Chiyong, Kariem Siquero-Vera BMC Oral Health, 2023 Background Surveys are a widely used research method in dentistry in different specialities. The study aimed to determine the quality of survey-based research reports published in dentistry journals from 2015 to 2019. Methods A cross-sectional descriptive research study was conducted. The report quality assessment was carried out through the SURGE guideline modified by Turk et al. Four journals indexed in the Web of Science were selected: BMC Oral Health, American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, Journal of Dental Education, and Journal of Applied Oral Science. The selection of articles was made using the PubMed database considering the following search words: questionnaire OR survey, two trained reviewers applied the guideline to the selected articles, and the controversies were solved by discussion and consensus. Results A total of 881 articles were identified, of which 99 met the selection criteria and were included in the study. The best-reported items (n = 99) were four: the two that described the introduction of a study, the results reflecting and concerning the study objectives, and the review by an ethics committee. Five items were poorly reported: to declare the incentives to study participants (n = 93), three items on the description of statistical analyses (n = 99, 99, and 94), and information on how nonrespondents differed from respondents (n = 92). Conclusions There is a moderate quality of reporting of all aspects that should be considered in survey-based studies in dentistry journals. Poorly reported criteria were found mainly in the statistical analysis.
