Enhanced photoconductive response of ZnO thin films with the impact of annealing temperatures on structural and optical properties Rajkumar C, Arunachalam Arulraj Scientific Reports, 2025 Zinc oxide (ZnO) is a versatile material widely used in optoelectronic devices due to its broad bandgap (3.37 eV), high electron mobility, and significant exciton binding energy (60 meV). In this study, ZnO thin films were fabricated on SiO₂/Si substrates via thermal evaporation, followed by annealing at 400 °C and 600 °C to investigate the effect of thermal treatment on their structural, optical, and photoconductive properties. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed the formation of the hexagonal wurtzite ZnO structure, with improved crystallinity observed at higher annealing temperatures. The photoconductivity of the films demonstrated enhanced response times and self-powered behavior, particularly in the sample annealed at 600 °C. These findings highlight the potential of ZnO thin films for fast-response photodetection applications and show that controlled annealing significantly influences photosensitivity.

Nanoarchitectonics of Layered Metal Chalcogenides-Based Ternary Electrocatalyst for Water Splitting Arunachalam Arulraj, Praveen Kumar Murugesan, Rajkumar C., Alejandra Tello Zamorano, Ramalinga Viswanathan Mangalaraja Energies, 2023 The research on renewable energy is actively looking into electrocatalysts based on transition metal chalcogenides because nanostructured electrocatalysts support the higher intrinsic activity for both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). A major technique for facilitating the conversion of renewable and sustainable energy is electrochemical water splitting. The aim of the review is to discuss the revelations made when trying to alter the internal and external nanoarchitectures of chalcogenides-based electrocatalysts to enhance their performance. To begin, a general explanation of the water-splitting reaction is given to clarify the key factors in determining the catalytic performance of nanostructured chalcogenides-based electrocatalysts. To delve into the many ways being employed to improve the HER’s electrocatalytic performance, the general fabrication processes utilized to generate the chalcogenides-based materials are described. Similarly, to enhance the OER performance of chalcogenides-based electrocatalysts, the applied complementary techniques and the strategies involved in designing the bifunctional water-splitting electrocatalysts (HER and OER) are explained. As a conclusive remark, the challenges and future perspectives of chalcogenide-based electrocatalysts in the context of water splitting are summarized.
Effect of annealing temperature on response time of ZnO photoconductor fabricated using thermal evaporation technique Rajkumar C Physica Scripta, 2022 ZnO has been deposited on SiO 2 /Si substrate using thermal evaporation technique. Further, the deposited ZnO thin film has been annealed at 400 °C, 600 °C, and 800 °C separately. The deposited ZnO thin films have been characterized using Ultraviolet-visible Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy (UV–vis DRS), Atomic force microscopy (AFM), x-ray diffraction (XRD) technique, and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The deposited ZnO thin films have multiphase structures of ZnO such as hexagonal, unknown and cubic. UV-visible spectra of deposited films show absorbance edges in UV and visible regions. The average particle size of non-annealed ZnO is ∼60 nm, whereas annealed ZnO (at 800 °C) is ∼124 nm. The average surface roughness of ZnO sample annealed at 800 °C is lower than that of non-annealed ZnO sample and ZnO samples annealed at 400 °C and 600 °C. Sputtering technique has been used to make gold contact on ZnO film for testing the photoconductivity property. The rise time of ZnO photoconductor annealed at 800 °C (T r = 0.04 s) is very fast as compared to that of all other ZnO photoconductors prepared using non-annealed ZnO sample and ZnO samples annealed at 400 °C and 600 °C.
