Nagaswarupa, Ganesh Koyyada Multifunctional and Smart Materials Advances in Sustainable Engineering Applications, 2026 Nanoscale materials, which are defined as the materials in which at least one dimension is confined in the range of 1–100 nm, have a significant effect on material science and engineering because of their distinctive physical, mechanical, and chemical characteristics. These materials have several attractive advantages such as high surface area, great mechanical strength, superior electrical and thermal conductivity, and adjustable optical properties. With the decrease of particle dimensions, the surface-to-volume ratio increases, which results in an increment of surface-dependent properties of the particles, such as catalytic activity and adsorption capacity. These unique properties make a class of nanostructured materials highly versatile for numerous high-end applications. Fine control of material characteristics at the nanoscale has allowed for great strides in fields that include but are not limited to energy storage, conversion, catalysis, pollution prevention, biological and medical needs, and sustainability-related infrastructure. As key components in energy systems, nanostructured materials have greatly boosted the performance of batteries, supercapacitors, and photovoltaic cells, providing a sustainable supply of clean energy. These advanced materials in environmental engineering are effective for purifying water, removing pollutants, and capturing greenhouse gases through advanced adsorption and catalytic work. The ability to manipulate nanoscale devices with high precision has consistently brought revolution to the biological and biomedical domain, such as in drug delivery systems, tissue engineering and diagnostics. This overview discusses advances in recent years of nanostructured materials, as well as their synthesis, design, and application, focusing on how they are making a positive impact on global challenges. This compilation specifically highlights sustainable engineering applications to show how these materials are used in environmentally sustainable and energy-efficient technologies. The marriage of nanotechnology with green and sustainable engineering practices presents unparalleled.
