Benitti Journal of the Brazilian Computer Society, 2026 Different strategies in the literature seek to help support awareness mechanisms in collaborative applications. However, the most common approaches are often applied in a specific context and do not focus on evaluating these mechanisms or the support provided from the user's perspective. Few studies present methods or processes that provide awareness aspects in collaborative systems; thus, finding a good starting point in the literature can be challenging for beginners in awareness design. We build upon the findings presented by Mantau and Benitti [2023a], providing contributions towards developing an awareness assessment process that enables accessing awareness and, consequently, collaboration support by measuring awareness mechanisms from the participant's viewpoint. Then, we expose the model’s artifacts to HCI and collaborative system examiners to gauge their appreciation and verify the suitability of the process based on reliability and usefulness criteria. The case study scenario demonstrated suitable indicators from the perspective of demographic data and IRT parameterization. As a result, the applicability of the awareness scale from the participant's perspective was achieved.
User-Centred Privacy and Data Protection: An Overview of Current Research Trends and Challenges for the Human-Computer Interaction Field Shirlei Aparecida de Chaves, Fabiane Benitti ACM Computing Surveys, 2025 A user-focused technological approach is essential for privacy and data protection, so a systematic mapping study was conducted to review how researchers approach such matters. Of 8,867 papers, 231 were systematically selected and analysed. Through thematic analysis, we identified three main themes: improving privacy policies, raising privacy awareness, and controlling information disclosure. Notably, 45% of the studies lacked user involvement, highlighting a diverse landscape in the extent of real user participation in research evaluations. This study provides valuable insights for researchers and practitioners in promoting privacy-preserving human-computer interaction.
Energy-efficient Multiplier Design Through Approximate Computing: Current Trends and Future Prospects Vinicius Zanandrea, Fabiane Benitti, Cristina Meinhardt Journal of Integrated Circuits and Systems, 2024 Approximate Computing can be effectively applied in error-tolerant applications in order to improve the energy efficiency of the circuits. Arithmetic units such as adders and multipliers are the core components in many embedded devices and hardware accelerators. In particular, multipliers have a significant influence on the performance and power characteristics of the system where they are inserted. As a result, approximate multiplier design has become an important research subject in recent years. This work discusses the state-of-the-art on the use of approximate computing to design energy-efficient multipliers. We observe that most of the proposed approximate multipliers rely on approximations in the partial product reduction, mainly exploiting approximate compressors or approximate adders. In addition, there are only few works targeting neural networks, which demonstrates that there is room for explore an approximate multiplier design in this application.The set of information provided in this paper allows to identify gaps in the literature and possibilities for new research on the design of low-power multipliers.
Automated Design Space Exploration of Approximation-Enabled Accelerators: a Systematic Literature Mapping Pedro Aquino Silva, Mateus Grellert, Fabiane B.V. Benitti, Cristina Meinhardt Journal of Integrated Circuits and Systems, 2024 This paper provides a systematic mapping of the literature regarding automated Design Space Exploration (DSE) for error-tolerant systems, where Approximate Computing (AxC) can be included to provide gains in energy efficiency or performance. Starting from the Scopus aggregator and IEEE Xplore library, 1302 texts were analyzed, from which 43 peer-reviewed research works were selected to map the state of the art in AxC-enabled DSE for the design of hardware accelerators. The selected papers were used to catalog the most commonly used search strategies, the methods for integrating approximate units and techniques in the design space of a given system, and challenges and opportunities for the usage of automated DSE in AxC-enabled workflows.The results highlight the usage of genetic and evolutionary algorithms, and identify a trend for tree search based exploration, with a focus on arithmetic units and functional approximation. This study also shows the challenge of integrating a DSE stage in existing workflows, particularly due to the difficulty of analyzing error and electrical characteristics with feasible runtimes.
