  • Mediation effect of reputation on the stakeholders' centric CSR and financial performance relationship
Neha Kumar, Parul Kumar, Devesh Nigam
International Journal of Business Governance and Ethics, 2021
This paper aims to investigate the relation between stakeholder led CSR, reputation and the financial performance. The stakeholders considered in the research were employees, environment, community, customers and investors. The reputation of the company has been taken as the mediator to analyse the change in CSR and financial performance relationship. A questionnaire was designed having 30 items enumerating the seven constructs. The structured equation modelling has been used to analyse the conceptual model of the impact of CSR on reputation and then on financial performance. The results concluded that all the stakeholders were significant in influencing the CSR decision making, with employees and investors being the most significant ones. It was also concluded that CSR positively impacts the reputation and reputation fully mediates the relationship between CSR and financial performance. Thus, major implication of the study is that managers can adopt the stakeholders' centric CSR activities so as generate the positive reputation which in turn would positively impact the company's sales revenue and profit.
  • A study of interaction effect of financial performance on the relationship of board gender diversity and corporate social responsibility
Neha Kumar, Parul Kumar, Devesh Nigam
Prabandhan Indian Journal of Management, 2021
Purpose : This paper aimed to investigate the relationship between board diversity, financial performance, and CSR of firms. Along with this, an attempt was made to study the interaction effect of board diversity and financial performance on the CSR spending of the firms. Methodology : Panel data of 80 companies listed on BSE 100 index were taken for the period starting from April 1, 2014 – March 31, 2019. The data pertaining to CSR spending, board characteristics, and financial performance has been taken into consideration. Panel data regression was employed to test the hypotheses framed. Findings : It was concluded that board size, proportion of women directors, and corporate governance played a significant role in impacting the CSR activities of the firms. As the number and proportion of women directors increases, the CSR spending of the firms improves. The return on assets, age, and size of the firms also significantly impacted the CSR spending. Practical Implications : Thus, the major implications of the study are to understand how the mandatory provision related to the appointment of women directors on board influences the financial performance and CSR spending of the firms. This study statistically confirmed that appointing more women on board improved the CSR of the firms. Originality : The present research made an attempt to enrich the existing literature related to CSR, board diversity, and financial performance. With respect to India, very few research studies have worked on examining the relationship among these variables.

  • Impact of Companies Act 2013 on the CSR expenditure
    Neha Kumar, Devesh Nigam
International Journal of Public Sector Performance Management, 2017
Moving from a voluntary to an obligatory regime, the enactment of Section 135 of the Companies Act 2013 is an ambitious attempt made that mandates some specific companies to disclose their CSR spending. This paper attempts to study the pattern of CSR spending after the enactment of the new law. Major observations were that 2014, being the initial year of implementation, did not observe much change in the CSR policies of the companies, however, in 2015, considerable changes were observed as companies started adapting to the new policies. The study also focused on the relationship, if any existed, between the corporate governance parameters and corporate social responsibility activities that a company undertakes. Multivariate regression was used for the purpose of analysis. Results depicted that financial variables significantly and positively impacted the CSR expenditure of the company in both the years of study, 2014 and 2015. However, in the year 2015, it was observed that one of the CG variable, i.e., board size significantly impacted the amount of company's CSR expenditure other than the financial variables PAT and size. Thus, it was concluded that corporate governance and financial variables together impacted the CSR expenditure that the company intended to spend.
