Energy Efficiency and International Regulation of Single-Phase Induction Motors: Evidence from Tests in the Brazilian Market Abrão Garcia Oliveira Junior, Welson Bassi, Francisco Antônio Marino Salotti, Hédio Tatizawa, Antônio Quirino da Silva Neto, et al. Energies, 2026 Single-phase induction motors account for a significant share of energy consumption in residential, commercial, and rural applications. However, unlike three-phase motors, they still lack specific regulation in Brazil. This paper aims to identify the main construction types of these motors and their performance characteristics, to map international regulations based on Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) and to assess the actual efficiency of motors available on the Brazilian market. The adopted methodology combined an extensive literature review with laboratory tests conducted in accordance with IEC Standard 60034-2-1, using a sample of 48 motors from various manufacturers. The results confirmed that split-phase, capacitor-start, permanent-split capacitor, and two-capacitor motors exhibit distinct performance characteristics that determine their suitability for different applications. The analysis of international regulation revealed that the European Union, the United States, and several other countries have already established normative criteria for single-phase motors, ranging from labelling requirements to the reach of MEPS. Finally, the analysis of the test results revealed that most single-phase motors available on the Brazilian market fail to meet the minimum efficiency levels established by the standards.
Nuclear Power Plants as Equivalents of Hydroelectric Reservoirs and Providers of Grid Stability: The Case of the Brazilian Electrical System Ivo Leandro Dorileo, Welson Bassi, Danilo Ferreira de Souza Energies, 2025 In the current configuration of Brazil’s hydro-thermal-wind power system, hydroelectric reservoirs have progressively lost their long-term regulatory role due to inadequate planning, inefficient energy use, and reduced inflows. In the context of the energy transition and the incorporation of low-emission technologies into the generation mix, this study proposes expanding nuclear baseload capacity as a “regulatory thermal buffer” to mitigate hydrological uncertainty and strengthen grid stability. Using the São Francisco River basin as a case study, an equivalence factor is developed to relate nuclear energy output to stored hydropower reservoir volume. Results show that nuclear generation can help restore the multi-annual regulatory capacity of Brazil’s hydropower system and enhance the resilience of the National Interconnected System by contributing substantial inertia to an increasingly variable, renewable-based grid.
Improving Awareness of Electrical Safety in Brazil: A Review of Abracopel’s Initiatives and Impacts Danilo Ferreira de Souza, Walter Aguiar Martins, Edson Martinho, Hédio Tatizawa IEEE Industry Applications Magazine, 2025 This article examines Abracopel’s initiatives to improve electrical safety in Brazil. Founded in 2005 to address the high number of electrical accidents, Abracopel has established itself as an essential entity in promoting electrical safety. The organization is involved in several projects, including the publication of a Statistical Yearbook of Electrical Origin Accidents, the Electricity Safety Perception Survey, and a “Snapshot of Brazilian Residential and Commercial Electrical Installations.” These efforts highlight the prevailing risks and the necessity for better public policies and safety practices. One of Abracopel’s strategic pillars includes the Essay, Drawing, and Video Competition, targeting students across Brazil to increase awareness about electrical safety. This project, celebrating 12 years in 2023, engages students in creating materials on electrical risks and prevention methods. The competition has shown remarkable reach and impact, with the number of participants growing. Each participant is believed to influence several other people in their communities. This article underscores the vital role of educational initiatives in shaping safer attitudes and practices using electricity. Furthermore, this project aligns with the two United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). The article concludes that such initiatives are highly efficient in fostering a culture of safety and awareness, thereby reducing electrical accidents in society.
