Before designing a foundation for a particular soil condition, the interest of a foundation engineer is to determine the total settlement of the structure and to select such contact pressure on soil that would not cause excessive settlement. Geotechnical engineers are, therefore, more interested in coefficient of consolidation (Cv), coefficient of volume compressibility (mv) and compression index (Cc) for design of foundations. The compression index (Cc) is determined through a time consuming and extensive consolidation tests. Attempts have been made to develop the empirical relations which can be used to determine the compression index (Cc) of silt–clay matrices without resorting to conventional geotechnical tests that may save costs as well as time of laboratory tests.
