The biosynthesis of plant nutraceuticals is modulated by symbiosis with an arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus grown in a high-phosphorus substrate Rita de Cássia Ribeiro da Luz, Carmelo José Albanez Bastos Filho, Qiang-Sheng Wu, Fábio Sérgio Barbosa da Silva Rhizosphere, 2026 Phosphorus is a regulatory nutrient in mycorrhizal symbiosis. Notwithstanding, little is known about the efficiency of fungi cultivated in a substrate with high P fertility on the biosynthesis of health-promoting compounds. The study aimed to verify the effect of Acaulospora longula , cultivated in a high-phosphate substrate on the optimization of metabolite production and sun protection factor (SPF) of Zea mays . For this purpose, A. longula was cultivated at two P levels: low P [3 μM KH 2 PO 4 ] and high P [15 μM KH 2 PO 4 ] and inoculated in Z. mays grown in a substrate with two levels of phosphate fertility (22 mg P dm -3 and 39 mg P dm -3 ). The leaves were harvested to evaluate the production of soluble carbohydrates, phenols, tannins, flavonoids, proanthocyanidins, flavonols, aboveground dry matter, and SPF. Contrary to expectations, A. longula grown at high P was more effective at enhancing the production of bioactive compounds in maize grown in the substrate without additional P. On the other hand, a synergistic effect was observed with the isolate grown at low P conditions and a dose of 39 mg P dm -3 , which resulted in improved synthesis of phenols, tannins, flavonoids, and flavonols. The same fungal isolate also enhanced SPF and proanthocyanidin accumulation, regardless of substrate P levels. It is concluded that A. longula is an alternative for increasing the biosynthesis of bioactive compounds relevant to the herbal medicine and phytocosmetics industries. Thus, producers can opt for A. longula cultivated in high P to reduce phosphate fertilizer expenses and to obtain a phytomass of quality due to a higher concentration of health-promoting compounds or A. longula cultivated in low P combined with a fertilizer investment to obtain phytomass with improved bioactive content. • Acaulospora longula produced in a low P substrate keeps its infectivity; • Inoculum production in a P-enriched substrate reduces A. longula infectivity; • Inoculum produced in high P increases metabolite production in maize grown in low P; • Inoculum produced in high P reduces phenolic production in maize cultivated in high P.
Hybrid Routing and Spectrum Allocation in Elastic Optical Networks by Machine Learning and Topological Metrics Renan Carvalho, Diego Pinheiro, Henrique Dinarte, Raul Almeida, Carmelo Bastos-Filho Optics, 2025 To meet the increasing demands for data, elastic optical networks (EONs) require highly efficient resource management. While classical Routing and Spectrum Assignment (RSA) algorithms establish a path and allocate spectrum, advanced versions such as Routing, Modulation-format-selection, and Spectrum Assignment (RMSA) also optimize modulation format selection. However, these approaches often lack adaptability to diverse network aspects. The hybrid routing and spectrum assignment (HRSA) algorithm offers a more flexible and robust approach by providing multiple choices between route (resource savings) and spectrum prioritization (fragmentation mitigation and network load balancing) for each network node pair. Despite its potential, the adaptive nature of HRSA introduces complexity, and the influence of topological features on its decisions remains not fully understood. This knowledge gap hinders the ability to optimize network design and resource allocation fully. This paper examines how topological features influence HRSA’s adaptive decisions regarding routing and spectrum assignment prioritization for source-destination node pairs in EONs. By employing machine learning approaches—Decision Tree (DT), Random Forest (RF), Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), and Support Vector Machine (SVM)—we model and identify the key topological features that influence HRSA’s decision-making. Then, we compare the models generated by each approach and extract insights using an a posteriori analysis technique to evaluate feature importance. Our results show the algorithm’s behavior is highly predictable (over 91% accuracy), with decisions driven primarily by the network’s structure and node metrics. This work advances the understanding of how topological features influence the RSA problem.
ACOP-MB: Amplifiers operating point optimization to increase QoT in multiband scenarios Felipe C.N.O. Lima, Erick A. Barboza, Leonardo D. Coelho, Carmelo J.A. Bastos-Filho, Joaquim F. Martins-Filho Optical Fiber Technology, 2025 The growing demand for data, driven by the increase in internet users and the need for higher bandwidth services, puts significant pressure on network infrastructures. In this context, maximizing the efficiency of optical networks has been a common effort among companies and academic groups. One promising approach to tackling this challenge is the use of multi-band optical transmissions, which make it possible to increase the data transmission capacity of an optical link. Rather than simply expanding the physical infrastructure, this solution seeks to maximize the use of existing resources. Due to the SRS (Stimulated Raman Scattering) effect, which is significantly present in multiband scenarios, as well as the wavelength-dependent parameters such as attenuation and effective area that increase complexity in these scenarios, a combined and simultaneous optimization process is required for the launch power and amplifiers for each band present on the link. Therefore, in this work, we present a new approach to optimizing QoT (Quality of Transmission) in a multiband scenario, called ACOP-MB (Adaptive Control of Operating Point - Multiband), which uses a genetic algorithm for optimization. We considered optical links with 360 and 440 km, 386 transmission channels in the S, C and L bands simultaneously, and EDFAs (Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifiers) and TDFA (Thulium Doped Fiber Amplifier). The proposed approach achieved a GSNR (Generalized Signal-to-Noise Ratio) of 14.34 dB over a distance of 360 km, representing a gain of approximately 7 dB over traditional loss compensation approach. In addition, ACOP-MB presented a transmission rate around 32 Tb/s higher when compared to the loss compensation approach, in the studied scenario, demonstrating its potential for optimizing the performance of multiband systems in advanced optical networks. • New GNPy version with power mask-based model for multiband systems. • Single-band optimization is not effective for multiband transmission. • Launch power must be optimized in addition to amplifier gain. • ACOP technique updated to support multiband transmission scenarios.
Binary Differential Evolution with a Limited Maximum Number of Dimension Changes Jade Filgueira, Thiago Antonini Alves, Clodomir Santana, Attilio Converti, Carmelo J. A. Bastos-Filho, Hugo Siqueira Algorithms, 2025 Evolutionary Algorithms (EAs) are those based on the phenomenon of survival of the fittest. Differential Evolution (DE) is a member of this family, and it is well-suited for handling problems with real-valued variables. However, to use DE to solve binary problems, it is necessary to employ some adaptation. The primary objective of the present study is to develop a new binary version of DE. The proposed algorithm is called Binary Differential Evolution with a limited maximum number of dimension changes (NBDE), and it was tested with the OneMax Problem, five variants of the Knapsack Problem (KP), and Feature Selection (FS). The results showed that NBDE is competitive and superior to the other tested algorithms in many instances. For the 0/1 KP and 0/1 Multidimensional KP, NBDE outperforms all the other algorithms for all instances. For the FS problem, the proposed algorithm demonstrates good accuracy as its primary quality. The proposed algorithm exhibits a satisfactory performance, particularly in high-dimensional problems, which appears to be a quality inherited from the method that inspired its creation. This is particularly interesting because it provides empirical evidence that the importation of operators can perpetuate a pattern of behavior in algorithms with different structures.
Does Mycorrhizal Biotechnology Modulate Lectin Accumulation in the Stem of Schinus terebinthifolia Raddi Seedlings? Caio Bezerra Barreto, Francisco Chagas Barbalho Neto, Carmelo José Albanez Bastos-Filho, Qiang-Sheng Wu, Michele Dalvina Correia da Silva, Fábio Sérgio Barbosa da Silva ACS Omega, 2025 stems and its relation to the production of other bioactive compounds. It suggests that AMF can quantitatively and qualitatively modulate lectin accumulation, a process closely tied to the host's anabolism.
