Assessment of knowledge and confidence for E-learning Devkan Kaleci, Ergün Akleman World Journal on Educational Technology Current Issues, 2019 One of the most important goals in E-learning is to guarantee that participants reach the learning objectives. We have observed that having the knowledge of the subject is not sufficient for reaching learning objectives. The participants must also develop understanding that they know the subject, which we have named confidence. In this work, we have demonstrated that it is possible to assess both knowledge and confidence using only two different types of multiple-choice test questions. We have developed 1) a method to design questions to identify both knowledge and confidence and 2) a method to estimate actual knowledge and confidence from answers. We have evaluated our method using Monte-Carlo simulations. Our simulations demonstrated that it is always possible to obtain reliable estimations for knowledge and confidence using approximately 100 multiple choice test questions in a given subject.
STEM education research: Content analysis Devkan Kaleci, Özge Korkmaz Universal Journal of Educational Research, 2018 People need to be qualified to adapt to innovations caused by the rapid change in information and technology. This would be realized with the integration of technology into education. In order to subsist in the world of science and technology the disciplines with an important role both now and in the future are science, technology, engineering and mathematics. In this regard, the number of studies conducted on the improvement of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education is also increasing day by day. In this study information is given about the studies conducted on STEM and a total of 40 academic studies consisting of articles and papers published in national and international journals are discussed. Within this scope, studies conducted on the subject matter according to the results of the content analysis are investigated. Research approaches, research methods, learning environments, learning outcomes, data collection tools, research samples, STEM subjects of these studies and body of literature are evaluated. Data collected from the studies are analyzed with methods of descriptive statistics. Results are presented as frequencies and percentage tables. As a result of the study it stands out that qualitative researches are preferred more in STEM education studies, experimental studies and surveys are used as research methods and studies are conducted mostly with primary school students. It is considered that this study would be helpful to researchers eager to study on the subject.
Integration of virtual reality fire drill application into authentic learning environments Tansel Tepe, Devkan Kaleci, Hakan Tüzün World Journal on Educational Technology Current Issues, 2018 In this study, a virtual reality fire drill application was developed with Head-Mounted Display virtual reality technology for university students. The aim of the study is to evaluate the integration process of this virtual reality application into authentic learning environments in terms of student opinions. Case study methodology was used in the study. The results show that this technology provides useful and permanent learning, practice opportunity to students, and this technology increases the motivation and engagement to the courses as well. It has been pointed out by the students that this technology should be used as a practice environment after the theoretical courses in authentic learning environments because this technology can save time and prevent cost lost in addition to avoiding risk factors. The physical environment of the classes can be improved and wireless virtual reality goggles can be used for using this technology, more effectively and efficiently as a course support material in authentic learning environments. Keywords: Virtual reality; Head-Mounted Display; virtual fire drill; authentic learning environments
Design, development, and marketing process of video games Devkan Kaleci, Tansel Tepe Mobile Technologies and Augmented Reality in Open Education, 2017 In this study, general information about video game and video game sector, process of steps when designing, developing, and marketing a video game are presented in detail. Since game designers attempt to create their own type and develop new game type, there is no certain acceptance about suitable categorization for video games and certain number of video games types. For this reason, it is firstly mentioned about video game concept as well as systematically categorizing all game types in this study. Afterwards, each of these game categories and game types are described in details. Furthermore, it is aimed to raise awareness of researchers interested in this area, and to help in removing false or incomplete information about video games in the process of video game development.
Experiential investigation of nonlinear acoustic field structure in two and three dimensions Devkan Kaleci, Ali Sahin, Baki Karabocu 2016 IEEE International Symposium on Medical Measurements and Applications Memea 2016 Proceedings, 2016 In this paper, two and three dimensional experimental nonlinear acoustic pressure fields that are produced by circular sources are presented. We developed an experiment systems to measure results of nonlinear acoustic pressure fields for the first three harmonic components along both acoustic and radial axis, in both two and three dimensions. The use of sub-harmonics to improve the lateral and axial image quality is also discussed. In addition, the experimental results are compared with theoretical results for the first three harmonics and are observed to essentially consistent with the theoretical results.
Finite amplitude pressure field of elliptical and rhomboid transducers in three dimensions O. A. Kaya, D. Kaleci, A. Şahin Acoustical Physics, 2011 Design of different type of transducers to enhance image quality by forming narrow beams at the principals of nonlinear acoustics is considered in the paper. Thus, the nonlinear pressure fields of elliptical and rhomboid transducers were simulated in three dimensions. The simulation method presented in this study is based on Aanonsen’s model for circular sources, and closely follows the model that recently explored for the nonlinear wave propagation due to square and rectangular sources in three dimensions [Kaya et al. “Pressure field of rectangular transducers at finite amplitude in three dimensions,” Ultrasound in Med. Biol., vol. 32, no. 2, pp. 271–280, 2006]. It is assumed that elliptical and rhomboid sources are plane sources, and driven at 2.25 MHz fundamental frequency. Typical results of nonlinear acoustical pressure field simulation are presented there in three dimensions for elliptical and rhomboid sources and compared with the results for rectangular source. The similarities and differences between the nonlinear pressure field of rectangular, elliptical and rhomboid sources are discussed. The numerical results show that diffraction effects and acoustical beam cross section depend on the source geometry a lot. It is noticeable that the nonlinear pressure field of a rectangular source has a broader beam profile than elliptical and rhomboid source.
