Route choice has traditionally been regarded as a fundamental decision-making process aimed at minimizing individual travel costs within transportation systems. However, increasing network complexity, heterogeneous user preferences, and the widespread use of advanced information technologies have transformed route choice into a multidimensional problem closely associated with environmental sustainability, infrastructure efficiency, and overall social welfare. Consequently, route choice is no longer limited to time- or distance-based preferences but represents a dynamic decision-making process shaped by multiple interacting factors. Although the existing literature extensively examines economic costs, engineering constraints, environmental impacts, behavioral responses, investment considerations, and regulatory frameworks, these determinants are often analyzed in isolation. The absence of a comprehensive synthesis integrating these factors within a unified analytical perspective represents an important gap in the literature. Motivated by this limitation, this study provides a structured and interdisciplinary review that synthesizes the principal determinants influencing route choice decisions. The findings indicate that route choice cannot be explained solely by rational cost minimization. Instead, user heterogeneity, trust in information systems, environmental risks, and institutional mechanisms play a critical role in shaping route choice behavior. By consolidating fragmented findings into an integrated conceptual framework, this study provides a comprehensive reference for future research on behavioral modeling, eco-routing strategies, infrastructure investment evaluation, and evidence-based transportation policy design. - Reinforcement Learning-Based Freeway traffic Control Concerning Emissions

Transportation Research Procedia, 2026
This study presents a reinforcement learning based framework involving the integrated use of ramp metering (RM) and variable speed limit (VSL) control towards the ultimate aim of mitigating traffic congestion and emissions. Traditional freeway traffic control strategies often fail to adapt dynamically to evolving traffic conditions, resulting in suboptimal performance. The proposed framework seeks, through simulation, the optimal setting of VSL and RM actions by leveraging RL. The learning-based architecture we have designed is trained and tested using data from a hypothetical freeway network piece and synthetic demand profiles. The performance of the framework is evaluated by considering multiple traffic demand levels and connected and automated vehicle penetration rates. - Hydrogen in Transportation

Hydrogen Energy Systems Advancing Sustainable Power Solutions, 2026
The transportation sector is a major contributor to global emissions, necessitating a shift toward sustainable energy sources. Hydrogen has emerged as a promising alternative fuel, offering zero emissions and high energy efficiency. This paper explores the role of hydrogen in transportation, focusing on its adoption in freight transport, business models for hydrogen producers and refueling station owners, and policy frameworks supporting its integration. Various studies highlight strategies for hydrogen deployment in different regions, including China, Sweden, and the Nordic countries, with an emphasis on decarbonization, market acceptance, and infrastructure development. Key challenges such as hydrogen production, storage, transportation, and fuel cell advancements are also discussed. Additionally, the paper examines the economic and environmental implications of hydrogen as a transportation fuel, including the potential of green hydrogen from renewable sources and biomass-based hydrogen production. By analyzing global trends, technological advancements, and policy initiatives, this study provides insights into the feasibility of hydrogen as a sustainable transportation fuel and its role in the transition toward a low-carbon future. - Reinforcement Learning Controlled Variable Speed Limits in Urban Expressway Mixed Traffic

Increase in Rapid urbanization has intensified traffic congestion, delays, and emissions on urban expressways, revealing the limitations of conventional control strategies. This study aims to develops a Reinforcement Learning (RL) based Variable Speed Limit (VSL) control framework using a Deep QNetwork (DQN) implemented in the Simulation of Urban Mobility (SUMO) environment to enhance traffic efficiency at an expressway merging section. Traffic data used was collected using a video camera recorder and radar speed gun, with vehicle trajectories extracted through the Traffic Data Extractor developed by IIT Bombay. The model implemented was calibrated and validated using field observations from two sitesone representing uninterrupted flow and the other in an onramp merging area. The simulation compared three configurations: a baseline case without control, a conventional rule-based VSL controller, and the proposed DQN-based VSL approach and the findings reveal that the DQN agent achieved a 18.8% reduction in total travel time compared to the baseline, while the rule-based VSL controller worsened performance by 21.7%. The learning-based controller effectively mitigated congestion, reduced shockwave formation, maintained higher average speeds, and improved travel time reliability under dynamic and stochastic traffic conditions demonstrating that a reinforcement learning-driven VSL system can significantly enhance both traffic flow efficiency and user-level reliability, outperforming traditional heuristic control strategies on urban expressways. - Traffic Congestion in Routing Problems: Insights from Autonomous Mobility-on-Demand and Shared Ride Systems

Arabian Journal for Science and Engineering, 2024
Traffic congestion has several adverse effects on urban traffic networks. Increased travel times of vehicles, with the addition of excessive greenhouse emissions, can be listed as harmful effects. To address these issues, transportation engineers aim to reduce private car usage, reduce travel times through different control strategies, and mitigate harmful effects on urban networks. In this study, we introduce an innovative approach to optimizing traffic signal control settings. This methodology takes into account both pedestrian delays and vehicular emissions. Non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-II and Multi-objective Artificial Bee Colony algorithms are adopted to solve the multi-objective optimization problem. The vehicular emissions are modeled through the MOVES3 emission model and integrated into the utilized microsimulation environment. Initially, the proposed framework is tested on a hypothetical test network, followed by a real-world case study. Results indicate a significant improvement in pedestrian delays and lower emissions. - A Framework for Evaluating the Safety and Homogenizing Effect of Freeway Traffic Controllers on Mixed Traffic Conditions

Urban traffic networks suffer in numerous ways from traffic congestion. Some of these adverse effects are increased travel times of cars, buses, bicycle users, pedestrians etc., with the addition of excessive greenhouse gas emissions. Transportation engineers and policy makers try to improve the quality of urban transportation systems by developing projects to enhance the pedestrian experience, reduce private car usage, reduce total time spent in the network through different control strategies, and diminish the detrimental effects. In this context, this study takes Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs) and pedestrians into account at signal-controlled intersections. A novel intersection signal control optimization methodology that incorporates pedestrian delays and vehicular emissions from CAVs is presented. Non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-II is utilized to solve the multiobjective optimization problem. For the emission calculations, the MOVES3 emission model is utilized. The proposed framework is tested on real-world case study. Simulation experiments showed major improvements in pedestrian delays and lower emissions. - A Study on Environmental Impact of Slow Moving Electric Vehicles Using Microsimulation on Lucknow Urban Road With an On-Ramp
