  • Functionalized organotellurium macrocycles: tuning their optical bandgap and investigation of their catalytic activity
Calvin Samuel, Velpula Pramod, Swandhana V. S., Alexander Steiner, Viswanathan Baskar
    Dalton Transactions, 2025
Organotellurium-based macrocycles have been synthesized with different capping halides. The variation of halide ions brought a change in the optical bandgap and they act as catalysts for effective detoxification of a mustard gas simulant.
  • Cerium(III) Phosphinate and Cerium(IV) Phosphostibonate Acting as Catalysts for Mild, Selective Sulfoxidation
Calvin Samuel, Tokala Navaneetha, Junaid Ali, Viswanathan Baskar
    Inorganic Chemistry, 2025
A Ce(III) phosphinate and a Ce(IV) phosphostibonate have been assembled by the reaction of a phosphinic acid and phosphostibonate with Ce(III) salts. Single crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) studies reveal the formation of a rare triangular Ce(III) oxo-cluster [CeIII3(Ph3CHPO2)]6Cl3(CH3OH)(H2O)8] (1) and a fascinating hexanuclear oxo-cluster containing Ce(IV) ions [CeIV6 (p-ClC6H4SbV)4(μ4-O)4(μ3-O)4(t-BuPO3)8(μ2-OCH3)8] (2). The molecular architecture of 2 showcased an interesting correlation with platonic solids, wherein the Ce(IV), Sb(V), and P(V) ions were found to be present in vertices of an octahedron, a tetrahedron, and a cube, respectively. Under mild conditions, 1 and 2 exhibited the capability to act as catalysts for sulfoxidation in the presence of hydrogen peroxide, with 1 acting as a homogeneous catalyst and 2 acting as a heterogeneous catalyst. Both 1 and 2 showed high conversion for various substrates, with 1 showing moderate selectivity while 2 showcased high selectivity. Moreover 1 and 2 catalyzed the oxidation of 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide (CEES) to nontoxic 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfoxide (CEESO) with high selectivity.
  • Silver-π Interaction: A Diverse Approach to Hybrid Material and Its Efficacy in Electrocatalytic Reduction of Nitrate to Ammonia
Calvin Samuel, Gujju Narsimhulu, Garima Bangar, Sai Hemanth Kumar Dasari, Gopalan Rajaraman, Viswanathan Baskar
    Inorganic Chemistry, 2024
Inspired by the intriguing nature of the metal-π interaction in organometallic chemistry, a novel 1D hybrid material has been designed. Herein, a functionalized tellurium allyl macrocycle (TAM) acts as a molecular building block and is knit together via silver-π interaction to obtain Ag-TAM. Ag is coordinated to two allyl groups and a phenyl ring in η 2 mode. Instead of the conventional polymerization strategy, a metal-π interaction is employed to interlink macrocycles. TAM and Ag-TAM showed electrocatalytic capability for the conversion of nitrate to ammonia. Ag-TAM showed an NH 3 yield rate 2-fold greater than TAM with a high faradaic efficiency of 94.6% with good durability, proving that interlinking of macrocycles via metal-π interaction improves the catalytic activity. Detailed periodic density functional theory (DFT) calculations unveil novel mechanistic insights, suggesting cooperative catalysis between neighboring Ag sites and contributing to the enhanced efficiency.
  • Electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution mediated by an organotelluroxane macrocycle stabilized through secondary interactions
Gujju Narsimhulu, Calvin Samuel, Sathishkumar Palani, Sai Hemant Kumar Dasari, Kothandam Krishnamoorthy, Viswanathan Baskar
    Dalton Transactions, 2023
A discrete liphophilic organotelluroxane macrocycle has been found to catalyse hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) by proton reduction efficiently.
  • Tunable bandgaps in self-assembled transition metal-incorporated heterometallic M2Sb4 (M = V, Mn, Co, Ni, and Cu) oxo clusters
Tokala Navaneetha, Uppara Ugandhar, Calvin Samuel, Thierry Guizouarn, Fabrice Pointillart, Rajamani Raghunathan, Viswanathan Baskar
    Dalton Transactions, 2023
The reaction of proligands with transition metal salts/base under solvothermal conditions forms heterometallic M2Sb4 oxo clusters. A reduction in bandgap from 4.2 eV (Sb6 oxo clusters) to 3.35–1.83 eV is observed.

Suman Mondal, Calvin Samuel, Viswanathan Baskar
    Journal of Molecular Structure, 2023
  • Stibonic acids and related stibonate-phosphonate clusters: Synthesis, characterization and bioactivity evaluation
Junaid Ali, Mohamad Mosa Mubarak, Calvin Samuel, Hadiya Amin Kantroo, Abbass Malik, Zahoor Ahmad, Viswanathan Baskar
