Mobile application: digital health card for deaf adolescents Thiago Yukio Murayama Yasue, Cláudia dos Santos Oliveira, Alessandro Pereira da Silva, Silvia Regina Matos da Silva Boschi, Terigi Augusto Scardovelli, et al. Revista Da Escola De Enfermagem Da USP, 2026 Objective: To develop a mobile health application (mHealth) accessible to deaf adolescents, based on their health card, promoting autonomy to the access to the user’s health information. Method: This was a methodological study, divided into three stages: a questionnaire to understand the knowledge of deaf adolescents about the health card, and development of the application using videos in Brazilian Sign Language Libras, Android Studio platform with Java language, and evaluation of the application. Results: Most deaf adolescents were not aware of the health card. The application has two interface modes: male and female card, with the particularities of each sex. Furthermore, user’s data security is carried out in accordance with the Brazilian General Data Protection Law. The application received a score of 85.5 from experts, being classified as “good” to “excellent” in terms of usability. Conclusion: The application provides information from the health card in text and video in Libras, according to the selected sex, promoting adolescents’ autonomy in accessing health information. Future implementations may include expansion to other mobile platforms.
Proposal of a Serious Game for Dynamic Balance Training Using a Force Platform: A Pilot Study Mariana da Palma Valério, Silvia Regina Matos da Silva Boschi, Danilo Luque Ribeiro, André Roberto Fernandes da Silva, Luan de Almeida Moura, et al. Games for Health Journal, 2025 Background: Physical training to improve balance in the elderly has shown excellent results, but maintaining consistent participation in such programs is challenging. Objective: To address this, a laterolateral balance simulation game controlled by a biaxial force platform was developed to support balance rehabilitation and encourage regular training. Method: The game was created using the Unity engine, with 3D models designed in Blender, including the "Relaxed Man Character" asset for the avatar. The player's objective is to maintain balance on a virtual board supported by a cylinder, controlled via the biaxial force platform. Validation involved structural tests, usability testing (System Usability Scale), and a pilot test with 10 healthy young volunteers. Statistical analysis was conducted using the Shapiro-Wilk and t-Student tests (P < 0.05) in Jamovi software. Results: Results indicated that the game performed as expected, and the usability test yielded an excellent score (81.5 points) from experts. The pilot test revealed that individualized calibration allowed for personalized training, with volunteers' scores improving by 17.6% in the second session of day 1, 26% in the first session of day 2, and 8.5% in the second session of day 2. Conclusion: The balance simulation effectively replicated the foot pressure movements needed to control an avatar on a virtual board. This personalized approach made the game accessible and easy to use for players. Future work will involve testing the game with the target elderly population, increasing the number of sessions, and analyzing muscle activation to fully determine the game's impact.
Analysis of anticipatory and compensatory postural adjustment in women of different age groups using surface electromyography Luan de Almeida Moura, Terigi Augusto Scardovelli, André Roberto Fernandes da Silva, Mariana da Palma Valério, Higor Barreto Campos, et al. Biomedical Physics and Engineering Express, 2025 Postural balance is crucial for daily activities, relying on the coordination of sensory systems. Balance impairment, common in the elderly, is a leading cause of mortality in this population. To analyze balance, methods like postural adjustment analysis using electromyography (EMG) have been developed. With age, women tend to experience reduced mobility and greater muscle loss compared to men. However, few studies have focused on postural adjustments in women of different ages using EMG of the lower limbs during laterolateral and anteroposterior movements. This gap could reveal a decrease in muscle activation time with aging, as activation time is vital for postural adjustments. This study aimed to analyze muscle activation times in women of different ages during postural adjustments. Thirty women were divided into two groups: young and older women. A controlled biaxial force platform was used for static and dynamic balance tests while recording lower limb muscle activity using EMG. Data analysis focused on identifying muscle activation points and analyzing postural adjustment times. Results showed significant differences in muscle activation times between the two groups across various muscles and platform tilt conditions. Younger women had longer muscle activation times than older women, particularly during laterolateral platform inclinations. In anteroposterior movements, older women exhibited longer activation times compared to their laterolateral performance, with fewer differences between the groups. Overall, older women had shorter muscle activation times than younger women, suggesting a potential indicator of imbalance and increased fall risk.
Moniz Game: Usability and User Experience Evaluation of a Musical Game for Motor Coordination Yasmim Fernandes Moniz, Bruno Toshio Gomes Gunji, Alessandro Pereira da Silva, Terigi Augusto Scardovelli, Silvia Cristina Martini, et al. Games for Health Journal, 2024 Purpose: The objective of this research was to develop a musical digital game for rehabilitation of upper limb and to verify its usability and user experience with professionals in the field (physical therapists). Materials and Methods: Thirty working professionals were recruited to evaluate the system. The usability was evaluated with the System Usability Scale (SUS) and the user experience was verified with the Game Flow scale. Results: The overall score of the SUS scale was 88.67 (±9.129); this score is interpreted as "Best Imaginable" (86-100). The user experience rating had most of its domains equal or higher than 4, which indicates that all the requirements for a good user experience were present in the game. Conclusions: The Moniz Game proved to be a game with good usability and can be a tool for application in clinical practice regarding motor coordination. However, further studies are needed to evaluate the effect of the Moniz Game on motor coordination in patients with neurological dysfunctions.
