Oedionychina Chapuis, 1875 is a large group of flea beetles that have been the subject of several taxonomic studies in recent years. Here, we present data on external morphology and genitalia of six species of Oedionychina from the Brazilian Cerrado. High-quality photos are included. We update descriptions of three known species, Alagoasa burmeisteri (Harold, 1881), Omophoita magniguttis Bechyně, 1955, and Paranaita opima (Germar, 1824), and describe three new species, O. mateusi sp. nov., Walterianella marae sp. nov., and Walterianella tapuiae sp. nov. The specimens were sampled at the Parque Estadual Altamiro de Moura Pacheco (PEAMP), Goiás, Brazil, a remnant of Cerrado mostly covered by semi-deciduous forest. These updates are part of our ongoing efforts to elucidate the diversity of Oedionychina in the Cerrado.

    Journal of Insect Biodiversity, 2024
The Cerrado biome is a vast ecoregion of tropical savanna in eastern Brazil. The leaf beetle species Platyphora flavozonata (Blanchard, 1843) is a new record for Parque Estadual Altamiro de Moura Pacheco in the Cerrado biome. Distribution of record of the species, the high-resolution photos and notes on external morphology are provided.
  • Polypore fungus beetles (Coleoptera: Tetratomidae) in a remnant of semideciduous forest of the Brazilian Cerrado: checklist and the description of a new species of Eustrophopsis Champion, 1889

    Zootaxa, 2024
Tetratomidae Billberg, 1820 is a small family of tenebrionoid beetles that primarily feed on polypore fungi. Their Neotropical diversity remains poorly known, with most recent studies concentrating on Nearctic and Palearctic species. The few records from the neotropics are from samplings in the Atlantic Forest or Amazon Rainforest. Here we present illustrations of genitalia and photos of two species of Eustrophopsis Champion, 1889, E. laurae sp. nov. and E. bilunulata Pic, 1912. The samplings were carried out with malaise traps in the Parque Estadual Altamiro de Moura Pacheco (PEAMP), Goiás, Brazil, a remnant Cerrado mostly covered by semi-deciduous forest. These species represent the first records of Tetratomidae for the Brazilian Cerrado since their original descriptions, elucidating the paucity of studies on the fauna of Coleoptera in Brazil. This research is part of our ongoing efforts to better understand the insect diversity of this region, especially in current scenarios of rapid deforestation and biodiversity loss.

  • Description of larva, pupa, and genitalia of Hybosa acutangula Spaeth, 1913 (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Cassidinae) from the Brazilian Cerrado
Bruno Piotrovski Begha, Sarah Siqueira Oliveira
    Revista Brasileira De Entomologia, 2024
Great advances were made in recent years regarding the description of immatures of Cassidinae and their taxonomy as a whole, but many taxa remain undescribed. This study focuses on updating morphological data for Hybosa acutangula Spaeth, 1913 (Chrysomelidae: Cassidinae: Ischyrosonychini), a tortoise beetle native of South America, which was collected in Fridericia florida (DC.) L. G. Lohmann in the Brazilian Cerrado. We provide descriptions and illustrations of the morphology of the larva, pupa, and genitalia of adults, all of which are novel for this genus. The main discerning features for this species among other Ischyrosonychini are the lack of dark patterns in the dorsum of either the larvae, being limited to the dark scoli and the cranium, or the pupae, and a much reduced anal fork. We also present the first record of parasitism by Chalcididae wasps, Brachymeria sp. Westwood, 1832 and Conura sp. Spinola, 1837. Morphological comparisons remain limited demanding further studies with other species of Ischyrosonychini, as to better understand the placement of this species within the taxonomy of tortoise beetles.
  • The usefulness of geometric morphometrics for differentiating polymorphic flea beetles
Raony César Silva Belém, Bruno Piotrovski Begha, Fausto Nomura, Sarah Siqueira Oliveira
    Revista Brasileira De Entomologia, 2024
Oedionychina Chapuis, 1875 is a diverse subtribe of Alticini leaf beetles, posing challenges and complexity in study due to mimicry and poorly informative descriptions. Herein, we propose geometric morphometrics as a tool for identifying polymorphic species of Alagoasa Bechyně, 1955, without the need for dissection. Thirteen anatomical landmarks on the thorax were applied to Alagoasa decemguttata (Fabricius, 1801), Alagoasa plaumanni Bechyně, 1955, and Alagoasa scissa (Germar, 1824). Canonical Variate Analysis (CVA) graphs effectively distinguished the three species. The most pronounced shape differences were observed between A. decemguttata and A. plaumanni, and between A. decemguttata and A. scissa. No shape variation was detected between A. plaumanni and A. scissa in the deformation grid. Geometric morphometrics proved to be a more precise method for describing and quantifying morphological differences in the thoracic shape of polymorphic Alagoasa beetles.
  • Elevating Omophoita octoguttata elytralis Bechyné, 1956 (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Galerucinae: Alticini) to species

    Papeis Avulsos De Zoologia, 2023
An updated morphological description for Omophoita elytralis (Bechyné, 1956), stat. nov., is presented, including the first account of the genitalia for this species. The separation Omophoita elytralis from O. octoguttata (Fabricius, 1775) is supported by differences found in the median lobe of males, elytral tegument uniform in color (not patterned), and their allopatric geographical distribution.
  • Checklist of Omophoita Chevrolat, 1836 (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Galerucinae: Alticini) and diagnoses for some species from southern Brazil: notes on the taxonomic history, redescriptions and new records

    Zootaxa, 2023
Morphological descriptions, taxonomic history and distribution data of Omophoita species recorded for southern Brazil (states of Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul) are presented. Through the analysis of the existing literature, databases, loaned material, and specimen collecting, we studied seven species of Omophoita recorded for southern Brazil: O. communis (Bechyné 1959), O. equestris (Fabricius 1787), O. magniguttis (Bechyné 1955), O. octoguttata (Fabricius 1775), O. personata (Illiger 1807), O. sesquilunata (Klug 1829), and O. sexnotata (Harold 1876). We report O. sesquilunata for this region for the first time. Updated morphological descriptions, including novel information for male and female genitalia are presented for those taxa with dissected specimens.
  • Redescription of omophoita octoguttata (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) and its immature stages, with notes on life history
Bruno Pigotrovski Begha, Mateus Henrique Santos, Laura Rocha Prado
    Iheringia Serie Zoologia, 2021
Given that many descriptions of Coleoptera were made with only external and superficial characters, an update to the original characterization of species is deemed necessary. This study focuses on updating the know morphological data for the adults of Omophoita octoguttata (Fabricius,1775) (Galerucinae, Alticini), a flea beetle native of southern Brazil. We also give insights on the morphology of its immature stages. The adult can be easily recognized by the pale macula at vertex, six large pale maculae, and two smaller in the humeral region at the elytra. The immatures are similar to other know Oedionychina. Eggs oval and orange. Mature larvae present setae bearing scoli, a reddened body, pygopod present, and lacking stemmata, but with curved hook-like tarsal claws. The pupae present slender black setae through its yellowed body, with the elytral and hind wing thecae curved around the body. The eggs are laid in small clutches in the soil and when the larvae eclode they stay in the aerial parts of plants. The mature larvae form a cocoon of soil matter around themselves for their pupal phase. Morphological remarks for larva and pupa of this species when compared to other members of the genus remain limited, demanding further studies with other species.
