MECHANICAL, TRIBOLOGICAL, THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY AND FLAME RETARDANT BEHAVIOR OF NATURAL FIBER AND BIOMASS DERIVED BIOCHAR TOUGHENED VINYL ESTER ECO-FRIENDLY COMPOSITE: A SUSTAINABLE AUTOMOTIVE MATERIAL S. MANOJ KUMAR, I. SARAVANAN, V. ANANDAKRISHNAN, S. VIJAYAKUMAR Surface Review and Letters, 2026 This research study focuses on the development of an automotive brake pad material that is environmentally sustainable. This is achieved by using rock wool fiber, silicon oxynitride (Si 2 N 2 O) friction material made from proso millet husk, and a biochar friction modifier obtained from tomato pomace. The main objective was to replace traditional friction modifiers such as alumina and graphite with affordable and environmentally friendly alternative supplies. The formulation of these unique friction modifier composites, which include rockwool fibers, is achieved by a hand layup method. Subsequently, they undergo post-curing at a temperature of [Formula: see text]C and are tested according to the guidelines set by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards. The results demonstrated that using Si 2 N 2 O as a friction modifier resulted in significant enhancements in the mechanical characteristics of the composites. The composite labeled as A4, which consists of a friction modifier composed of Si 2 N 2 O and biochar in a ratio of 12:8, demonstrated the greatest values for tensile strength (117[Formula: see text]MPa), flexural strength (163[Formula: see text]MPa), compression strength (129[Formula: see text]MPa), impact resistance (5.69[Formula: see text]J), hardness (80 shore D), and lap shear strength (22[Formula: see text]MPa). Similarly, the A3 composite, when using a 10:10 friction modifier, showed improved resistance to wear, with a specific wear rate of 0.013[Formula: see text]mm 3 /Nm and a Coefficient of Friction (COF) of 0.26. The addition of both Si 2 N 2 O and biochar particles increased the flame retardant properties of the composites. However, a higher concentration of Si 2 N 2 O had a more pronounced effect on boosting flame retardancy compared to biochar. In addition, the A5 composite with a high Si 2 N 2 O content (15:5) demonstrated the lowest thermal conductivity, measuring at 0.203[Formula: see text]W/mK. Therefore, the substitution of alumina and graphite with Si 2 N 2 O and biochar seems to be a beneficial approach that fulfills the criteria for brake pads in cars, while also decreasing environmental harm and aligning with the ideals of a circular economy.
EFFECT OF HIGH TEMPERATURE-TREATED SI2N2O ON MECHANICAL, TRIBOLOGY, FATIGUE, AND CREEP BEHAVIOR OF AA7075 METAL MATRIX COMPOSITE S. MANOJ KUMAR, I. SARAVANAN, D. SUDARSAN, P. SUJIN Surface Review and Letters, 2025 Engineering materials are now developed concerning to environmental benefits and not by compromising the strength properties. With an emphasis on their potential as high-performance, sustainable materials, this research study examines the mechanical, wear, fatigue, and creep behavior of annealed rice husk ash (RHA) Si2N2O-dispersed AA7075 metal matrix composites (MMCs). To improve the microstructure and mechanical performance of the composite, high-temperature heat treatment was done on Si2N2O, and a tensile strength of 550.3 MPa and a fatigue strength of 339[Formula: see text]MPa were reported. Specimen N2 (3 weight percent Si2N2O) has exceptional mechanical and fatigue characteristics. However, specimen N3 (5 weight percent Si2N2O) exhibits the best resistance to wear and creep, with a creep strain of 0.3278 at 10,000[Formula: see text]s and a specific wear rate of 0.0048[Formula: see text]mm3/Nm. As reinforcement increases, scanning electron microscopy images demonstrate a shift from ductile to marginal brittle transition. Moreover, composite N2 achieves optimum interfacial bonding and negligible voids, whereas N3 exhibits particle clustering that results in stress concentrations. As reinforcement content rises, the density and porosity tests reveal a progressive drop in density (from 2.95[Formula: see text]g/cm3 for N0 to 2.84[Formula: see text]g/cm3 for N3) and porosity (from 4.75% for N0 to 3.23% for N3), which enhances structural compactness and performance. While N3 performs exceptionally well in wear and creep resistance, N2 offers the finest overall mix of mechanical strength, ductility, and fatigue resistance. These results demonstrate that annealed RHA Si2N2O-reinforced AA7075 composites offer an effective and sustainable substitute for structural, automotive, and aerospace applications where high-performance and lightweight materials are essential.
