The Taurus sign: A novel clinical sign for rapid diagnosis of patent vitello-intestinal duct with double intusussception Rafey Abdul Rahman, Survesh Kumar Gupta, Muniba Alim Tropical Doctor, 2026 A patent vitello-intestinal duct uncommonly presents as neonatal bowel prolapse. We describe a 20-day-old infant with double intussusception showing the Taurus sign, confirmed surgically and treated by resection and anastomosis with good recovery. This distinctive sign allows rapid bedside diagnosis, signals vascular compromise, guides surgery, and promotes urgent intervention, helping prevent ischaemic morbidity in this rare neonatal emergency, especially in resource-limited settings, thus improving early outcomes through timely surgical referral and management.
A low-cost pen-type neuromuscular electrical stimulator for intraoperative muscle complex localization in anorectal malformation surgery Rafey A Rahman, Survesh K Gupta, Anshuma Kant, Muniba Alim, Vinay Kanaujia Tropical Doctor, 2026 Accurate placement of the neo-anus within the sphincter complex is critical for continence in anorectal malformation (ARM) surgery. Intraoperative localization may be difficult, and dedicated stimulators are not always available. We describe the modification and clinical use of a low-cost pen-type neuromuscular electrical stimulator for intraoperative muscle complex localization, with successful localization achieved in all patients, enabling precise neo-anal placement without device-related complications or significant increase in operative time.
Breaking the cycle: Evidence-based insights from 500 SNCU admissions in rural India Ramesh Chand, Muniba Alim, Rafey Abdul Rahman, Neha Saroj, Nishant Sharma Tropical Doctor, 2026 India's Special Newborn Care Units are critical for reducing preventable neonatal deaths. Systematic evaluation of admission patterns provides evidence for targeted healthcare improvements. Birth asphyxia dominates rural neonatal morbidity. Focused investments in intrapartum monitoring, resuscitation training, and rapid referral systems are essential for reducing preventable deaths.
Glycerine soaked bandage drain: A novel technique for non-surgical management of neonatal rectal prolapse Survesh K Gupta, Rafey A Rahman, Muniba Alim, Umesh K Gupta Tropical Doctor, 2025 Neonatal rectal prolapse (NRP) is a rare, distressing condition in neonates, often linked to malnutrition, diarrhoea, and constipation. The effectiveness of glycerine soaked bandage drain for non-surgical management of idiopathic NRP is demonstrated.
Hypertrophic pyloric stenosis in an older child: A rare presentation with successful standard surgical management Minu Bajpai, Amit Singh, Shasanka Shekhar Panda, Karunesh Chand, Abdul Rahman Rafey BMJ Case Reports, 2013 Infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis is a disease of neonatal period usually manifest between the third and fourth weeks of life. Metabolic alkalosis and paradoxical aciduria are two common sequel of this entity. We report an unusual case of an 8-year-old boy who presented with recurrent, long-standing episodes of non-bilious vomiting and poor weight gain without any other metabolic derangement.
