• The influence of friendships on bullying behavior among Brazilian adolescents
Sandra Nunes, Ana Júlia Paulina De Oliveira
Anuario De Psicologia, 2025
The study aimed to examine differences in perceived negative influence from friends among adolescents categorized into four bullying behavior groups (aggressors, victims, neither aggressors nor victims, and victims/aggressors). Additionally, it explored whether victimized adolescents differed significantly from non-victims, and if aggressors differed from non-aggressors, across four types of bullying (cyberbullying, physical, verbal, and relational). A total of 194 participants took part, with 61.3% identifying as female (M = 17.46 years; SD = 1.26). Instruments included a sociodemographic questionnaire, Bullying Victimization/Behavior Scales, and the Modified Negative Peer Influence Scale. Results indicated that the group of victims/aggressors reported having more friends who exhibited delinquent and bullying behaviors compared to other groups. Victims of verbal, physical, and relational bullying, when compared to non-victims, were found to associate more with friends displaying negative behaviors. Comparisons between aggressors and non-aggressors revealed that all forms of aggression were linked to friendships with peers exhibiting delinquent and bullying behaviors. The study suggests future research should delve into the impacts of other socialization contexts - such as family, school, and community - to comprehensively understand this phenomenon.
• Community Violence and Bullying Among Brazilian Adolescent Students
Sandra Adriana Neves Nunes, Ana Júlia Paulina de Oliveira
Quadernos De Psicologia, 2025
This study examined whether adolescent groups—bullies, victims, non-involved, and bully-victims—differ in their perception of community violence. Additionally, we investigated whether victimized adolescents differ in their perceptions compared to those who are not victimized and whether aggressors perceive violence differently from non-aggressors. The sample included 194 students (119 females, 61.3%) with a mean age of 17.46 years. Participants completed questionnaires on sociodemographics, bullying behaviors, and perceptions of community violence. Results showed that victims and perpetrators perceived their communities as more violent than non-involved peers. Victims perceived more proximal violence, and relational bullying victims also perceived distal violence. Notably, only verbal aggressors differed from non-aggressors in their perceptions of violence. The findings suggest that victims and perpetrators view community violence differently, highlighting the importance of considering social contexts. Future research should explore other socialization environments, such as family, friends, and school, to deepen understanding of these dynamics.

Applied Neuropsychology Child, 2025
The COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted the mental health of young individuals globally, leading to increased emotional dysregulation due to various cumulative stressors. This study assesses a therapeutic approach that combines group-based cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) with executive function (EF) training in 36 children (55% female, M = 11.2 ± 1.8 years; 45% male, M = 10.4 ± 1.6 years) experiencing emotional distress in the post-pandemic context of returning to in-person classes. We evaluate executive functions, including working memory, inhibition, and cognitive flexibility, as well as emotional responses (self-reported) and psychophysiological changes measured by heart rate variability (HRV). Post-intervention, children exhibit improvements in working memory, inhibition, cognitive flexibility, emotional regulation (cognitive reappraisal), and parasympathetic activity. Executive functioning domains, such as working memory and flexibility, significantly predict enhancements in emotional responses. The findings indicate that integrating CBT and EF training can effectively improve cognitive and emotional regulation in children experiencing post-pandemic distress. This suggests the feasibility and preliminary potential of integrating executive function training with CBT to enhance and foster emotional regulation. However, further research is needed to confirm its effectiveness in larger samples.
• Self-esteem and life satisfaction among Brazilian adolescents victimized and bullies
Nunes, Sandra Adriana, Oliveira, Ana Júlia Paulina de
Analise Psicologica, 2024
Abstract: Bullying is characterized by repeated physical or psychological intimidation, leading to harassment and abuse that can impact the well-being of both victims and perpetrators. This study investigated differences in self-esteem and life satisfaction among students who had been victims or bullies compared to those who had never experienced bullying, either as victims or aggressors. The study involved 194 adolescents, with an average age of 17.46 years (SD=1,26), from the Federal Institute of Science and Technology of Bahia, Brazil. Four scales were used: the Bullying Victimization Scale, Bullying Behavior Scale, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and Global Life Satisfaction Scale. Results indicate that victims of verbal and relational bullying had lower life satisfaction than non-victims. Victims of relational bullying also had lower self-esteem compared to those who had never been victimized. Victims of verbal bullying showed a trend towards lower self-esteem compared to non-victims. Finally, relational bullies had lower life satisfaction than non-bullies. We concluded that bullying adversely affects the subjective well-being of both victims and perpetrators, underscoring the importance of addressing bullying behaviors among adolescents.
• Predictors of life satisfaction among university students in the state of Bahia, Brazil
Sandra Adriana Neves Nunes, Thiago Ferreira de Sousa, Grasiely Faccin Borges
Avances En Psicologia Latinoamericana, 2023

Journal of Physical Education Maringa, 2022
The present study estimate the prevalence of negative self-rated health and to analyze its association with simultaneous risk behaviors (insufficient levels of physical activity, greater exposure to sedentary time and inappropriate sleep time) in students at a public university in the state from Minas Gerais, Brazil. It consists of cross-sectional study, with data collected through a questionnaire. The outcome variable was negative self-rated health. The independent variables were estimated by the questions related to the time spent on physical activity, sitting and sleep time, and these three behaviors were considered according to the risk criteria (none, one, two and three risk behaviors). The association was estimated by the Prevalence Ratios (PR), via Poisson regression. 1,110 students participated in the study. The prevalence of negative self-rated health among university students was 47.3%, and the prevalence of two risk behaviors and three risk behaviors were 41.3% and 11.3%, respectively. The simultaneous occurrence of three risk behaviors was associated with negative self-rated health in university students. The information in this study makes it possible to characterize the need for actions to promote health in the university environment.

Mariana da Silva Ferreira, Sandra Adriana Neves Nunes, Camila Bosquiero Papini, Thiago Ferreira de Sousa
Mundo Da Saude, 2022
The aim of this study was to examine the effect of isotemporal substitution of physical activity, sedentary, and sleep time in relation to negative self-rated health (SRH) in university students from a public university in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. A cross-sectional study was carried out, in which data were obtained via a questionnaire and the study’s outcome was the negative SRH. The time per day spent on physical activity, sitting, and sleeping were standardized by constants of 10, 30, and 60 minutes. The isotemporal substitution model was used through the estimation of the Odds Ratio via binary logistic regression. The significance level was 5%. A total of 1,110 students participated in this study. It was observed that replacing 10, 30, or 60 minutes per day of sitting time for the same amount of time in physical activity reduces the probability of negative SRH among university students. In general, greater probability of negative SRH were observed when replacing the same times of physical activity with sitting time. No association was observed with sleep time reallocation. It is concluded that replacing at least 10 minutes of sitting time with physical activity can progressively reduce chances of negative SRH among university students.
• Psychometric properties of the Brazilian version of the lived experience component of the Spiritual Health And Life-Orientation Measure (SHALOM)
Sandra Adriana Neves Nunes, Helder Miguel Fernandes, John Wayne Fisher, Marcos Gimenes Fernandes
Psicologia Reflexao E Critica, 2018
This study had the following aims: (i) to translate the Spiritual Health and Life-Orientation Measure (SHALOM) into Brazilian Portuguese and adapt it to ensure the semantic/conceptual equivalence and content validity of the Brazilian version and (ii) to analyse the psychometric properties—reliability, convergent validity, discriminant validity and factorial validity—of the lived experience component, also called the Spiritual Well-Being Questionnaire (SWBQ), in a calibration sample and in a validation sample of Brazilian adults. The calibration sample comprised 436 subjects, 159 men and 277 women, aged between 18 and 79 years (mean age = 32.20 years; SD = 11.46); the validation study sample comprised 388 subjects, 253 women and 135 men, aged between 18 and 59 years (mean age = 30.59 years; SD = 9.44). All subjects completed a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Brazilian SWBQ and the Psychological Well-being Scale (PWBS). The results provide evidence of the reliability and factorial validity of an oblique four-factor model of a reduced 17-item version but revealed some problems with the convergent validity of the communal and personal factors (average variance extracted < .50). Nonetheless, these results provide evidence that the Brazilian version of the lived experience component of SHALOM (or SWBQb) has good psychometric properties and is a valid method of evaluating the spiritual health of Brazilian adults. Further research is required to establish the convergent and discriminant validity of this reduced version.
