Making Meaning in Puppetry Materials Practice Perception, 2025
This essay analyzes the use of puppets in the play Hamlet-ex-Máquina, performed by Coletivo 42 troupe in São Paulo, Brazil, from 2017–2019. Directed by Erika Bodstein, the production was based on German playwright Heiner Müller’s play Die Hamletmaschine, itself a response to William Shakespeare’s tragedy Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, from which this production also drew material. The puppets in this show were used in surprising ways, and the uncanniness of the scenes performed with them often revealed unforeseen interpretations that offered the audience new layers of meaning. This essay analyzes the construction of these scenes, with attention to the materiality and performance of the puppets, noting whether they supported or contrasted with the dramatic situations in their respective scenes.
