  • Visualizing connections: University campus and social infrastructure

    As a social infrastructure, the material substrates of a campus intertwine with the sociabilities it supports. Intending to identify the integration potential between a Brazilian public university campus and its surrounding neighborhoods, we mapped the campus’ social infrastructures and identified through diagrammatic studies its morphological dimensions. Internet routers distributed on the university campus provided georeferenced data of the human dynamics on campus. Counting user connections in groups of access points, we obtained the population density of the potential social infrastructure use. Afterward, associating Wi-Fi data and typological information, we traced itineraries that connect these infrastructures. The results encompass a systemic view that highlights the campus’ potential to develop sociability within a complex service network. Furthermore, through new readings of the social infrastructures, we suggest alternative potential uses. These results highlight the hybrid methodologies that associate objective characteristics of the built environment with data-driven methodologies, such as Wi-Fi-generated datasets.

    Resumo A delimitação das áreas de influências dos impactos no meio urbano, realizada durante os Estudos de Impacto de Vizinhança (EIV), é fundamental para que os empreendimentos contribuam com o cumprimento da função social da propriedade e da cidade. Este artigo demonstra, a partir de pesquisa em casos concretos, como a vizinhança vem sendo delimitada nos primeiros cinco anos de aplicação do instrumento na cidade de Florianópolis/SC. Trinta e dois EIVs aprovados foram analisados como casos-referência para esse objetivo, os dados e especificações técnicas utilizados na pesquisa foram extraídos dos documentos protocolados pelos empreendedores, dos pareceres emitidos pelo Instituto de Pesquisa e Planejamento Urbano de Florianópolis (Ipuf) e Termos de Compromisso de Compensação assinados, além de visitas exploratórias. O universo estudado demonstrou frequentes distorções quanto ao conceito de vizinhança utilizado na implementação do instrumento da política urbana EIV, pois a delimitação dos impactados na cidade não é utilizada como parâmetro para a definição da área de influência dos impactos dos empreendimentos. Os levantamentos indicaram a necessidade da revisão do princípio para a delimitação da vizinhança, essencial para que o princípio da função social da propriedade prevaleça sobre os interesses individuais.

    A pesquisa observa as tendências de desenvolvimento dos modelos de universidade com o objetivo de apresentar uma proposta de planejamento fundamentada na perscpectiva do projeto regenerativo. Assim, buscou-se pensar sobre o declínio urbano, bem como quais políticas e iniciativas poderiam ser desenvolvidas para ajudar a remediar os problemas ambientais encontrados em campi e no seu entorno. A metodologia, aplicada no contexto urbano do Campus Sede da Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC), foi realizada em dois momentos. Primeiramente, com uma abordagem qualitativa e com a utilização das Guias de Projeto Regenerativo para Campus Universitário observou-se os problemas existentes no recorte do estudo. Assim, foi possível elaborar os potencias regenerativos. No segundo momento, os potenciais regenerativos obtidos foram organizados por similaridade de assunto em 10 Tópicos, configurando, dessa maneira, as diretrizes para o projeto regenerativo no Campus Trindade da UFSC. Após a aplicação da presente metodologia, concluiu-se que o conceito e a avaliação do projeto regenerativo permitem fornecer as bases a favor do alinhamento de um novo processo de desenvolvimento, o que concilia os esforços do desenvolvimento humano com a recuperação ambiental.Palavras-chave: Projeto regenerativo, campus universitário, integração, desenvolvimento sustentável.
  • Campus regenerative design supported by university Wi-Fi connections

    A 60-year-old Brazilian university campus reflects its development actions throughout history. The degradation of its water streams and automobiles prioritization has significantly impacted the ecosystems’ resilience and the university’s activities. This article explores data analytics and visualization of Wi-Fi authentication processes, whose data have been stored in the last 10 years. This noteworthy connections database is a powerful tool, still overlooked due to the remarkable risks for users’ privacy. Brazil has followed 2018 European regulations to protect data privacy, when working with personal data. Therefore, we present an anonymization process that prevents one to identify and distinguish a subject within a set of subjects of the database. Three studies illustrate our examination of data potential to understand the university’s dynamics. These inquiries present relevant contributions to the process of planning and implementing campus green areas at the rivers’ edges, pedestrian and cycle paths, and places to facilitate interdisciplinary encounters.
  • Algorithms-aided sustainable urban design: Geometric and parametric tools for Transit-Oriented Development

    This chapter is part of a research on algorithmic approaches to sustainable urban design. It focuses on the use of computational tools to provide quick and dynamic assessment while planning and discussing interventions in urban areas. The objective is to address the use of algorithmic systems to formulate effective strategies for sustainable urban projects, guided by Transit Oriented Development (TOD) principles. TOD is an urban development model that considers geometric principles and measurable parameters for designing sustainable cities. It advocates the creation of mixed-use neighborhoods within walking distance to a variety of transportation options and amenities, so that basic urban needs are easily accessible. In addition to establish a theoretical framework connecting algorithmic-parametric concepts and geometrical features of TOD, this chapter describes an experimental employment of algorithmic models working on TOD principles, in order to enhance a systematic and dynamic testing and subsequent argumentation for sustainable urban projects.
