Objectives: to interpret young university students’ experiences regarding elder abuse and develop a theoretical model. Methods: a qualitative study, based on Strauss’ approach of Grounded Theory and Bauman’s theoretical framework, with theoretical saturation sampling, in which 34 university students from different areas were interviewed. Data processing used NVivo software. The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee. Results: participants highlighted different types of elder abuse as well as their invisibility and trivialization in society. Older adults’ frailty and vulnerability were identified as risk factors, suggesting preventive strategies, including the inclusion of the topic in academic curricula, the promotion of healthy aging, and the strengthening of public policies. Final Considerations: the theoretical model developed highlights the urgent need for educational interventions based on a critical understanding of this problem, with an emphasis on human sensitivity and the morality of social interactions.

    Journal of Perioperative Nursing, 2025
Introduction: There is a need for a policy about endemic diseases and pandemics to increase the safety of healthcare professionals, especially nursing personnel. Studies on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on perioperative nurses’ work processes are scarce.Aim: The objectives of this study were to understand the work experience of Brazilian perioperative nurses at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic and to develop a theoretical model that represents this process.Method: This is qualitative research with theoretical saturation achieved through the analysis of the 19th interview with nurses who had experienced the phenomenon under study. The interviews were recorded using a conferencing system and then transcribed in full, after which they were analysed according to grounded theory. Results: Three subprocesses emerged from this analysis: the COVID-19 pandemic left nurses in unprepared surgical settings feeling less confident, nurses were protagonists of transformational leadership in the work process and in shaping their professional identity, nurses reflected on the impact of COVID-19 on their work process and professional identity while the pandemic continued. From the realignment of the components of these subprocesses, it was possible to abstract the core category (process), entitled ‘from fragility to transitional overcoming of epic protagonism of perioperative nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic: transformational leadership as an intervening component for professional identity’.Conclusion: The discovered theoretical model posits transformational leadership as a potential tool for reconstructing nurses’ professional identities. Finally, this research recommends the formulation of a global policy to support systematic, active and continuous organisational programs for the management of future epidemics and pandemics.

Aline Ramos Covo de Oliveira, Maria José Sanches Marin, Miriam Fernanda Sanches Alarcon, Geisa dos Santos Luz
    Revista Gaucha De Enfermagem, 2025
Objective: To develop and validate an educational game aimed at preventing violence against children and adolescents. Method: This is an applied methodological research conducted between April and August 2023. To develop the game, two workshops were initially held with 19 children and adolescents aged 10 to 14, participants in a social project within a community in a medium-sized city in the Midwest region of São Paulo state, Brazil. The workshops began with a screening of the short film LOU (Disney Pixar®), followed by expressive activities such as drawing and writing, as well as group discussions on the topic addressed. The game was developed by a research team comprising undergraduate and post-graduation students, based on data collected during the workshops with the target audience and a review of the relevant literature. This process highlighted different types of violence, reflections, and experiences shared by the participants, which directly contributed to defining the rules, characters, narrative, dynamics, and content of the game. Validation involved the participation of 12 expert judges, and a content validation index was used to measure agreement among evaluators. Results: A card game titled "Peacing: for a World without Violence" was developed and validated, achieving a Content Validation Index of 0.99 in the second validation round, indicating significant agreement among the judges. Conclusion: The educational game was considered validated by expert judges and proved to be an interactive and engaging tool with the potential to prevent violence among children and adolescents.

Juliana Ribeiro da Silva Vernasque, Miriam Fernanda Sanches Alarcon, Daiana Bonfim, Paula Sales Rodrigues, Eduardo Federighi Baisi Chagas, Maria José Sanches Marin
Revista Latino Americana De Enfermagem, 2025
Objective: to evaluate the impact of a gamified educational intervention on violence against the elderly on the knowledge, perceptions and attitudes of university students. Method: a non-randomized clinical trial involving 44 university students from the health sciences, humanities and exact sciences, with 22 in the intervention group and 22 in the control group. The intervention group participated in hybrid activities on gamification applied to the topic of violence against the elderly. The evaluation was conducted using thematic cases validated by experts, with statistical analysis using Chi-square and Student’s t tests. Results: the intervention promoted significant differences between the groups in attitudes and perceptions about violence against the elderly. Students in the intervention group were more likely to report cases of neglect and were more aware of how to prevent abuse in public spaces. Conclusion: the gamified intervention was effective in stimulating protective attitudes and ethical perceptions of violence against the elderly, but there was no significant association with the knowledge variable. There is a need for more comprehensive studies that can provide complementary evidence to the results of this study.

Daniela Garcia Damaceno, Miriam Fernanda Sanches Alarcon, Mara Quaglio Chirelli, Carlos Alberto Lazarini, Maria José Sanches Marin
    Texto E Contexto Enfermagem, 2024
Objective: to interpret the experience of empowering elderly women to report domestic violence and develop a theoretical model that explains it. Method: a qualitative study, carried out using Grounded Theory. Between February 2018 and January 2020, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 21 elderly women who filed police reports. Also, nine professionals working at the Women’s Defense Station of the Civil Police of the State of São Paulo, Brazil, located in a medium-sized city in the countryside of São Paulo, were interviewed. Results: the phenomenon identified as “Taking the lead in coping with violence”, based on the categories, revealed that elderly women experience multiple conditions of vulnerability resulting from the situation of dependency, conflicts in relationships and unfavorable living conditions. Even so, the impacts of this violence generate the need to take action against it and to be empowered to report it. After reporting it, they experience the complexity of it and find ways to deal with the situation. Conclusion: violence reporting by elderly women derives from the individual empowerment process, driven by the decision to stop the abuse, even with possible consequences, thus awakening critical awareness based on self-perception of the context of life.

Objective: to analyze how Primary Health Care professionals experience domestic violence against women. Method: qualitative research, conducted from January to June 2023, through interviews with 20 Primary Health Care professionals, in a medium-sized municipality in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. The data obtained were interpreted using the Content Analysis Technique, thematic modality. Results: professionals emphasize the need for a sensitive approach and early identification, expressing feelings of perplexity and powerlessness during care. The impacts of violence are perceived by the victims, families, and society, causing physical, psychological, and social consequences. Challenges include lack of training, fear of reprisals, and lack of institutional support. The limitations faced by women in confronting violence are linked to lack of information, financial and emotional dependence, generating fear and insecurity. Conclusion: professionals experience the complexity of providing health care to women who are victims of domestic violence, and it is inferred that investments in professional training, institutional protection, and the creation of spaces that can support women are necessary to prevent re-victimization.
  • UNDERSTANDING OF ELDERLY WOMEN ABOUT VIOLENCE
Ademara Aparecida de Oliveira, Maria José Sanches Marin, Carlos Alberto Lazarini, Miriam Fernanda Sanches Alarcon, Magali Aparecida Alves de Moraes, Elza de Fátima Ribeiro Higa
New Trends in Qualitative Research, 2023
