Nanometric Faujasite (FAU) Zeolite Ion-Exchanged With Metal Ions for Hemostatic and Antimicrobial Applications: A Thromboelastographic and Microbiological Study Guilherme de Paula Guarnieri, Juliana Bergamasco Laurenti, Beatriz Crespo, Edivandra Buzato Silva, Taiza Maschio‐Lima, et al. Chemistry an Asian Journal, 2026 Integrating antimicrobial functionality with the intrinsic clot‐promoting properties of zeolites represents a promising strategy for next‐generation wound‐care materials, where rapid hemorrhage control must be coupled with infection prevention. Here, we investigate nanocrystalline Faujasite (NanoFAU) and its ion‐exchanged derivatives to elucidate how extra‐framework cation identity governs the balance between hemostatic and antimicrobial performance. NanoFAU samples exchanged with Ag + , Ba 2 + , Ca 2 + , and Mg 2 + were comprehensively characterized by XRD, SEM/HRTEM/EDS, AFM, BET surface area analysis, 2 9 Si MAS NMR and FT‐IR spectroscopy, confirming preservation of the FAU framework and successful cation substitution. All ion‐exchanged materials exhibited isoelectric points below physiological blood pH, consistent with negatively charged, procoagulant surfaces. Thromboelastography revealed that Ca 2 + ‐exchanged NanoFAU (NanoFAU‐Ca) achieved the most pronounced hemostatic response ( R = 1.1 min; K = 1.2 min; MA = 60.3 mm), whereas Ag + ‐exchanged NanoFAU (NanoFAU‐Ag) provided strong antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923) and Candida albicans (ATCC 90028), displaying bactericidal and fungistatic effects, respectively. Importantly, NanoFAU‐Ag maintained cell viability above the ISO 10993‐5 cytotoxicity threshold in HaCaT keratinocytes. These findings demonstrate that ion exchange enables rational tuning of NanoFAU to achieve complementary hemostatic and antimicrobial functionalities while preserving cytocompatibility, establishing NanoFAU as a versatile inorganic platform for multifunctional wound management and supporting future in vivo evaluation.
Efficient Hydrogenation of Furfural to Furfuryl Alcohol Using Cu-Impregnated Chromium Silicate Catalysts in Ethanol Media Vinicius L. Medeiros, Yuriy Lipisa, George W. Huber, José Geraldo Nery Chemistryselect, 2026 A 10 wt.% Cu‐impregnated chromium silicate catalyst was synthesized via a sol–gel method followed by hydrothermal treatment using PDADMAC as a mesoporogen. XRD confirmed the formation of an MFI‐type structure and its preservation after copper incorporation and reduction, with CuO and Cu 0 identified in the impregnated and reduced samples, respectively. TGA indicated water desorption and decomposition of residual organics, while N 2 physisorption revealed mesoporosity. H 2 ‐TPR and XPS analyses showed the coexistence of Cr 6 + /Cr 3 + and Cu 2 + /Cu 0 species, with ∼60% copper reducibility. SEM and TEM analyses revealed spherical particles decorated with CuO nanoparticles, slit‐like pores, and Cu aggregates of ∼6 nm. The reduced catalyst exhibited high performance in furfural hydrogenation in ethanol, achieving 100% conversion and 86% selectivity toward furfuryl alcohol. Kinetic analysis yielded a turnover frequency of 5.14 × 10 −3 s −1 , consistent with a Langmuir–Hinshelwood–Hougen–Watson mechanism. Post‐reaction analyses confirmed structural stability, although partial Cu 0 reoxidation led to slight deactivation. Reactivation restored full conversion with 84% selectivity. Overall, the catalyst shows high activity, stability, and recyclability under mild conditions.
Covalent Immobilization of Laccase on Mesoporous Bismuth Silicate for High-Performance Biodegradation of Contaminants Erick Paiva Cancella, Guilherme de Paula Guarnieri, Yuriy B. Lipisa, Fábio Rogério de Moraes, Adriano de Vasconcellos, et al. European Journal of Inorganic Chemistry, 2026 Bismuth silicate (BiSi‐ext) was synthesized hydrothermally using tetrapropylammonium bromide (TPA·Br) as an organic structure‐directing agent at 200°C under autogenous pressure for 7 days. Soxhlet extraction of the template yielded phase‐pure bismuth silicate, indexed to an orthorhombic unit cell ( a = 23.234 Å, b = 17.109 Å, c = 3.897 Å), consistent with a highly anisotropic, layered framework. The material exhibited a high specific surface area (310 m 2 ·g −1 ) and mesopore volume (0.36 cm 3 ·g −1 ). Covalent immobilization of Myceliophthora thermophila laccase onto the silanized, glutaraldehyde‐activated support produced Lac–GA–APTES–BiSi‐ext. Bioinformatic modeling revealed that immobilization at Lys188 expanded the active‐site pocket volume from 342 to 423 Å 3 , enhancing substrate accessibility. The biocatalyst demonstrated improved thermal stability, reusability, and catalytic efficiency, achieving complete decolorization of Tectilon Blue 4R‐01 200% and ∼73% degradation of ibuprofen within 2 h at 40°C. Mechanistically, laccase performs single‐electron oxidation at the dye's secondary amine to generate N‐centered radicals and •OH; these species—directly or via in situ H 2 O 2 /Cu‐assisted Fenton‐like chemistry—drive aromatic hydroxylation, ring opening to muconic‐type/polycarboxylated intermediates, and stepwise decarboxylation. These results establish Lac–GA–APTES–BiSi‐ext as a robust, scalable, and eco‐friendly platform for advanced wastewater remediation targeting pharmaceutical residues and recalcitrant dyes.
Biomass-Derived Porous Crystalline Calcium-Silicates Synthesized from Chicken Eggshell Waste Using Organic Amine Templates: A Case Study for Potential Hemostatic Application Guilherme de Paula Guarnieri, Oscar Antonio Niño Santisteban, Erick Paiva Cancella, Eduardo Ribeiro de Azevedo, Ivana Conte Cosentino, et al. European Journal of Inorganic Chemistry, 2025 Uncontrollable hemorrhage is a major cause of mortality in accidents, trauma, and medical procedures, highlighting the need for effective hemostatic agents. Zeolites and similar materials are promising due to their adsorption properties and ability to concentrate coagulation factors. This study reports the synthesis of calcium‐silicates from chicken eggshell waste using TEA.OH, TPA.OH, and TBA.OH as templates. TPA.OH and TBA.OH direct the formation of rhodesite, a fibrous calcium‐silicate, while TEA.OH results in quartz. Materials synthesized with TPA.OH and TBA.OH have surface areas of 53.3–100.3 m2 g−1 and mesopores ranging from 5.7 to 27.7 nm with pore volumes of 0.018–0.11 cm3 g−1. In vitro coagulation assays (PT, aPTT) revealed that CaZ‐3 and CaZ‐4 activate factors within the contact system. The recalcification assay shows a significant reduction in clotting time, indicating action via the intrinsic pathway. Thromboelastographic analysis confirms high hemostatic performance: the material prepared with TBA.OH shows a shorter clot formation time (R = 1.8 ± 0.5 min) and higher maximum clot strength (MA = 52.1 ± 1.3 mm) than QuikClot, demonstrating its potential as an effective, waste‐derived hemostatic agent.
Electrochemical sensor based on epoxy-functionalized BEA nanozeolite and graphene oxide modified glassy carbon electrode for bisphenol E determination Alex H. Miller, Huong Thi-Thanh Nguyen, José G. Nery, Alistair J. Fielding Journal of Applied Electrochemistry, 2023 An epoxy-functionalized beta type nanozeolite (BEA)/graphene oxide nanocomposite modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE/BEA/APTMS/GA/GO/NF) has been created for the differential pulse voltammetric determination of bisphenol E (BPE). The modified electrode presented an enhanced current response in comparison with bare GCE. A linear dependence of anodic peak current (Ip) and scan rate (ν) was observed, which showed that the electrochemical process was adsorption-controlled. Differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) was employed and optimized for the sensitive determination of BPE. Under the optimized conditions, the anodic peak current was linearly proportional to BPE concentration in the range between 0.07 and 4.81 µM, with a correlation coefficient of 0.995 and limit of detection 0.056 μM (S/N = 3). The electrode showed good repeatability and storage stability, and a low response to interfering compounds. Comparison was made to the determination of bisphenol A. To confirm the electrode analytical performance, recovery tests were performed, and deviations lower than 10% were found. The BEA zeolite-GO nanocomposite proved to be a promising sensing platform for bisphenol determination. Graphical abstract
