Journal of Materials Science, 2026
This work investigates the adsorption of Mn 2+ ions on hydrothermally synthesized Nb 2 O 5 nanoparticles obtained via an oxidant peroxo method, with particular emphasis on the role of functional groups present on the nanoparticle surface. Orthorhombic Nb 2 O 5 was formed at a mild temperature (100 °C), yielding nanocrystalline particles with high colloidal stability and a strongly negative surface charge. FTIR and zeta potential analyses reveal a carbonyl and hydroxyl-rich surface that promotes electrostatic attraction toward Mn 2+ species. Adsorption experiments demonstrate rapid Mn 2+ uptake, reaching equilibrium within minutes, with kinetics best described by a pseudo-first-order model, indicating a physisorption-dominated process. Equilibrium data are best fitted by the Freundlich and Redlich–Peterson isotherms, reflecting surface heterogeneity and multilayer adsorption, with an experimental adsorption capacity approaching 116.67 mg g −1 . These findings demonstrate that hydrolyzed Nb 2 O 5 is an efficient and tunable adsorbent for Mn 2+ removal, offering strong potential for water treatment and environmental remediation applications. Advanced Functional Materials, 2026
Cu‐based catalysts have emerged as critical components in photo‐ and electrocatalysis, offering sustainable solutions for renewable energy and environmental applications. The variable oxidation states of Cu enable diverse catalytic pathways, and its abundance, low cost, and tunable properties have positioned them at the forefront of catalytic innovation. This review provides a comprehensive overview of Cu‐based catalysts applied for sustainable energy production and environmental remediation. The classification of copper‐based catalysts, including metallic copper, copper oxides, copper sulfides, copper halide perovskites, copper‐based metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs), and covalent organic frameworks (COFs), is discussed, highlighting their structural and functional diversity. Various synthesis methods, such as wet chemical approaches, electrochemical and photochemical routes, sputtering, and thermal decomposition, are presented. The applications of copper‐based catalysts in key sustainable energy and environmental remediation processes are explored, focusing on photo‐ and electrocatalysis. Specifically, CO2 reduction, water splitting, oxygen reduction, nitrogen fixation, pollutant degradation, and organic synthesis are examined. The mechanisms underlying these processes are analyzed, including the factors influencing their efficiency and selectivity. These applications demonstrate their potential for tackling dual global challenges: diversifying the energy matrix and mitigating environmental issues. By bridging fundamental insights, this review underscores Cu‐based catalysts as a cornerstone in advancing sustainable energy technologies. - Thermal oxidation synthesis of MoS2/MoO3 composites for cationic dye adsorption

Coatings, 2024
The cladding process reduces manufacturing costs by depositing super austenitic stainless steel onto low-carbon steel. Arc welding techniques, especially gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), are commonly used for this purpose. This study evaluates the influence of heat input on cladding performance. Macroscopic analysis showed good fusion of the weld beads to the base metal with no defects. Higher heat input resulted in a lower dilution rate due to increased reinforcement. A microstructural analysis of the heat-affected zones revealed similar characteristics, with martensite formation attributed to cooling conditions. Increased microhardness was observed at the interface between the cladding and base metal, corroborating the microstructural findings. Additionally, a significant enhancement in corrosion resistance was noted in the deposited layers. This research contributes to optimizing cladding processes, ensuring better material performance in industrial applications. - Exploring the stability and catalytic activity of monoethanolamine functionalized CuO electrode in electrochemical CO2 reduction

This study explores the experimental parameters related to the production of Nb2O5 over alumina coatings produced by plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) and evaluates its use in photocatalytic applications. The influence of niobium precursor concentration and the electrolyte temperature on the electrochemical, morphological, and compositional responses are investigated using chemometric tools. The experimental design provides a geometrical representation of experimental parameters and shows the effect of the anodizing conditions on the pore density and the anodization curves. The samples are prepared at a constant current (10 mA cm−2) under the PEO regime. The coatings reveal a porous structure and crystalline phases of Nb2O5 and γ‐Al2O3. A preliminary photodegradation test under UV radiation and utilizing Rhodamine B (RhB) solution shows the best photocatalytic performance for the sample produced by the highest Nb salt concentration (16.0 g L−1) and highest temperature (18.7 °C). These results are attributed to a higher niobium content in this sample and crystalline phases of Nb2O5 over the Al substrate. - TiO2/BiVO4 composite from preformed nanoparticles for heterogeneous photocatalysis

Nanomaterials based on metal oxides are extensively studied for several applications due to their versatility. Improvements in their performances can be obtained due to specific structural modifications. One possible modification is by doping the crystal structure, which can affect the materials structure and properties, especially in nanosized particles. Electronic features are among the properties that can be modified through the doping process, consequently morphological and optical parameters can also be controlled by this process. In this sense, this review presents some modifications to tin dioxide (SnO2), one the most studied materials, mainly through the doping process and their impact on several properties. The article starts by describing the SnO2 structural features and the computational models used to explain the role of the doping process on these features. Based on those models, some applications of doped SnO2, such as photocatalytic degradation of pollutants, CO2 reduction, and desulfurization of fossil fuels are presented and discussed. Additionally, the review describes many biological applications related to antimicrobial activity for doped SnO2 and its nanostructures. Although most of the examples presented in this article are based on the doped SnO2, it also presents examples related to SnO2 composites with other nanomaterials forming heterojunctions. The metal oxides SnO2, doped-SnO2 and their nanostructures are promising materials, with results reported in many fields presented in this review, such as theoretical and computational chemistry, environmental remediation, nanoparticle morphology control, fossil fuels improvement, and biomedical applications. Although widely explored, there are still fields for innovation and advances with tin dioxide nanostructures, for example, in transparent conducting oxides, in forensics as materials for latent fingerprints visualization, and sensors in medicine for detection of exhaled volatile organic compounds. Therefore, this article aims to be a reference regarding correlating the doping processes and the properties presented by the SnO2 nanostructures. - Synthesis and photocatalytic performance of Bi2O3 thin films obtained in a homemade spin coater
