  • Paralinguistic expressions of respect in spoken interaction: a cross-cultural study of Uzbek, Japanese, and American English
    Yusupova Sabohatxon
    International Journal of Multilingualism, 2025
This cross-cultural experiment compares the performance and reception of prosody, timing, and voice quality expressing respect across English, Uzbek, and Japanese. Based on recent research on encoding politeness and language-specific cue weightings, we propose that respectful speech will exhibit reduced intensity, a slower tempo/more extended silences, as well as systematic changes in voice quality. Additionally, we suggest that these cues will have non-uniform distributions across languages. Acoustic analyses of production data from adult native speakers on formal and informal tasks, as well as complementary perception tasks to estimate in-group and out-group interpretation, are conducted. The results indicate convergence in timing adjustments between the groups. However, fragmentation in cue weightings (e.g. intensity/duration plays a more salient role in JP/UZ than U.S. English), with predictable cross-cultural misperceptions. I address the implications of theories of rapport management and the impact of the (im)politeness reciprocity principle, offering practical insights for intercultural training. This study contributes to the expanding literature on the acoustics of (im)politicness, which now includes Uzbek examples, and jointly models the production and perception in a single study design.
  • Gender-based comparative analysis of respect in linguistic expression: a study of Uzbek, Japanese, English, and German
    Sabohatxon Yusupova
    Cogent Arts and Humanities, 2025
This study examines gendered expressions of respect across four typologically distinct languages: The research analyzes two honorific systems—Uzbek and Japanese—alongside pragmatic systems, such as English and German. This study analyzes survey responses from 200 native speakers and corpora of more than 400 gendered dialogues. The exchange of formal expressions between men and women shows contrasting results because women used siz with greater frequency in Uzbek female speech by 70%, and Japanese women applied keigo verb forms 85% above male usage. The research disproves general theories about social niceties because language structures simultaneously work to support and diminish masculine social dominance during interactions. Youth living in cities continue to develop hybrid linguistic elements because they use sen/siz forms in Uzbek and build digital gender-neutral pronouns from scratch. Research shows that language works to preserve and challenge hierarchies based on gender, but sociolinguistic policy and study need to place cultural sensitivity at their core.
  • Intercultural idiomatic expression in German and Uzbek: a comparative study
Yusupova Sabohatxon A’zamjonovna, Yusufjonova Shaxloxon Muxtorovna
    Cogent Arts and Humanities, 2025
Idioms represent a special layer of language and mirror culturally and mentally oriented modes of society. The present comparative study focuses on idioms in German and Uzbek, two linguistically and culturally quite different languages to investigate the intersection of metaphor, culture, and cognition. Based on the Cultural Linguistics and Conceptual Metaphor Theory, the analysis utilizes over 100 idioms in dictionaries, literature, and speech databases. The idioms are organized in thematic groups (body parts, animals, colors, social behavior, and culturally specific references) and examined in terms of structure, figurative patterns, and cultural conceptualizations. Even though both languages use the exact domains of metaphors, like anatomy and emotions, the symbols have very different meanings. The German idioms emphasis individual accountability, abstract thinking, and machine-like or historical metaphors. Uzbek expressions, in contrast, are oriented to social responsibility, sentimental colouring, and oral tradition collectivism. The problems of translating non-equivalent idioms are also discussed, and the strategies suggested in the study include paraphrasing, functional equivalents, and adaptation to the culture. This study advances phraseology, translation studies, and intercultural communication by demonstrating that idioms represent cultural worldviews and contribute to cross-cultural communication.
