This study examines changes in land use and soil types in the Upper Euphrates River Basin from 2017 to 2023, and their impact on Curve Number (CN) values, a key hydrological tool for estimating surface runoff. The study area is located within the upper Euphrates River Basin, extending from Turkey and Syria to the Iraqi border at Al-Qaim. The study utilized remote sensing and geographic information system techniques, employing the Soil Conservation Service – Curve Number (SCS-CN) method and the HEC-GeoHMS model. The results revealed a significant increase in the area of natural pastures, a marked decline in Barren lands, and a relative expansion of agricultural and Built-up land. Gypsisols and Calcisols were found to be the most widespread soils, exhibiting medium to high permeability. These changes led to a gradual decrease in high CN values (79-84) and an increase in average values (64-69), reflecting improved soil permeability and reduced flood risk, while increasing the region's resistance to drought. The study proposes adopting sustainable water policies in Iraq and enhancing regional cooperation to address the ongoing decline in the flow of the Euphrates River, which has decreased by 50% between 2000 and 2023.
  • Evaluation of Manning's Coefficients for the Al-Adhaim River Basin in Iraq utilizing Modern Techniques

Engineering Technology and Applied Science Research, 2025
The current study presents an innovative analysis that combines climate and land use data to assess changes in Manning's coefficient within the Al-Adhaim River Basin (ARB) from 2017 to 2023. The primary objective is to calculate the hydraulic roughness coefficient (Manning coefficient, n) and evaluate its variations in relation to climate and land use changes. The ArcGIS and HEC-RAS software were utilized for the spatial and hydraulic analysis, respectively, as well as to calculate the arithmetic average for the entire study area. The results indicate an increase in temperature, humidity, and rainfall of 0.82 oC, 1.07 g/kg, and 0.41 mm/year, respectively, with a decrease in wind speed of 0.02 m/s. These climatic changes contributed to a 3.96% increase in crop area, while human activities led to a 0.72% rise in built areas and a 3.93% reduction in open areas. Manning's coefficient, despite its low value of 0.0695, demonstrated a strong relationship between its value and the aforementioned factors.

  • Hydraulic model for flood inundation in Diyala River Basin using HEC-RAS, PMP, and neural network

    Open Engineering, 2024
The Diyala River Basin in Iraq is vital for water supply to residential, agricultural, and the Tigris River (with approximately 4.5 billion cubic meters annually), but it faces frequent floods and droughts due to reliance on rainfall. This study aims to address these issues by simulating flood inundation using the hydrological engineering centre-river analysis system model and predicting high-intensity rainfall with artificial neural networks. ArcGIS and remote sensing tools aid model development with data from official sources and organizations such as national aeronautics and space administration and food and agriculture organization. The hydraulic model is calibrated using satellite imagery to depict a 2019 flood, and artificial intelligence predicts the precipitation patterns for the next 50 years based on historical data from 1981 to 2021. One of the challenges and difficulties encountered in the study is the scarcity of available data, as well as the absence of scientific research pertaining to the region regarding hydraulic modeling. The study identifies flood risks in March and April every year, notably for the Hemrin Dam, which may exceed permissible water levels (reach a level over 110 m where the Hemrin Crest level is 109.5 m). To mitigate this, an artificial canal is proposed to divert water annually, protecting the dam and downstream areas without disrupting operations. The diverted water could also augment the Tigris River in Kut Governorate during summer. The study demonstrates the value of integrating multiple modeling techniques and data sources for accurate hydraulic predictions. It offers insights for decision-makers in flood management and planning. This study contributes to efficient flood management strategies by adopting a multidisciplinary approach.

In Iraq, the Diyala River (DR) occasionally experiences both droughts and floods. The DR is supplying the amount of water to Tigris River at the south of Baghdad. Estimation of runoff from precipitation is very important because of its impact on decision-making in water resources management. The conceptual and distributed hydrological model was adopted and by HEC-HMS, Geo-HMS, and GIS software, remote digital elevation models were processed. The sensitivity, calibration, and validation were made through the period 2017-2021. The estimated CN values were from 60 to 100 with distributed related ratios between 0.6% to 52.8%. The differences between the observed and estimated inlet discharge of Hemrin Dam were for (+0.1 to -0.2) % with some more at peak discharge point. The HEC-HMS, using data from NASA and FAO, was acceptable model. The results with an accuracy of 95%, which is indicated by the value of R2 and PBIAS indicators.
  • Study the slope stability of earthen dam using dimensional analysis techniques

    International Journal of Geomate, 2021
Slope stability is calculated using several methods. All these methods produce estimated results based on inaccurate assumptions, and their results were particularly acceptable. Furthermore, these methods rely on supposing and segmenting the surface of failure as well as performing complex calculations. This paper introduces the "Dimensional Analysis Technique" as a new approach for dealing with earthen slopes. Four dimensionless groups ( , , ,
  • Earthen slope stability using dimensional analysis

Journal of Physics Conference Series, 2021
Slope stability is an important aspect in the management of civil engineering projects. The stability of earth slopes is a significant concern for safety and the economy. There are several methods for finding the safety factor. Spencer’s method is considered one of the most accurate methods for calculating the factor of safety but it depends on the others on dividing the slope geometry into the number of slices with complicated calculations. This paper introduced a new theoretical equation (using dimensional analysis) capable of defining and testing the slope stability of the natural and man-made slope of the earth without complicated calculations. The major and significant variables which affect and contribute to the stability of a slope will be listed and discussed. The Geo-SLOPE and SEEP software were used to present the stability analyses of the earth dam and compare the result. The derived equation shows the excellent relationship between the factor of safety concerning the ratio of internal friction angle over slope angle ∅/α and the hydraulic gradient. The main objective is to set a new rapid method for checking the stability of slopes instead of a complex calculation that can describe the slope stability of the natural earth slope.
