Family Album: the people who make up 20 years of Information Design research in Pernambuco Guilherme Ranoya, Eva Rolim Miranda, Solange Galvão Coutinho Infodesign, 2024 This article presents the comprehensive trajectory undertaken to map the Information Design researchers trained in the Postgraduate Program in Design at UFPE, identifying and categorizing their research, the period in which it was conducted, their advisors, their themes, that is, the entire production of ID in the region, and the people involved in it. The problem originates from the construction of the memory of how Information Design developed in the northeast of Brazil, and the difficulty encountered in accurately presenting simple quantitative data. We report here the process and strategies applied to carry out this survey. The mapping, which continues, leads to an interactive memory artifact, which contributes in a subtle but relevant way to ID research: a “family album”, which establishes a sense of community. Perhaps the most significant contribution of this work lies in demonstrating that memory and the sense of belonging are part of the research support infrastructure, operating on delicate and often overlooked aspects of scientific production, such as the motivation and emotional well-being of researchers.
Origins of information visualization in corporate bullet points: an archaeology of the graphic configuration paradigm in data visualizations (1979–1995) Guilherme Ranoya, Rafael De Castro Andrade Infodesign, 2024 The present work seeks to highlight the origin of the current paradigm of data visualization design and the logic of creating charts and presentations, which emerged with the personal computer revolution. The initial digital tools developed for producing corporate communication artifacts were crucial in establishing the reasoning and production flow of visualizations up to the present day. Knowing beforehand that the origin of data visualization predates personal computing by centuries, it’s surprising that it is now entirely subject to models and guidelines originating from computer sciences. Through an investigation conducted with an archaeological method adapted to design artifacts, it is possible to understand the discontinuity and abrupt transformations experienced in the conventions and values of this practice. Through this methodological approach, along with the analysis of the productive mindset discourse and the available tools in this specific period, it becomes possible to explain the changes that aparted the craft of visualization artifacts from the domain of art and/or design, subjecting them to corporate sphere empowered by emerging arsenal of information technologies.
