Tatiana de Medeiros Carvalho Mendes, Kleyton Santos Medeiros, Renata Fonsêca Sousa de Oliveira, Liana Carlan Padilha, Janete Lima de Castro
    BMJ Open, 2026
Introduction Gas station workers are at increased risk of inhaling volatile chemical compound vapours that may cause headaches, dizziness, fatigue, eye and nasal irritation, as well as haematological and neurological changes. This systematic review aims to estimate the prevalence of symptoms associated with occupational exposure to benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene vapours among fuel station workers. Methods and analysis The review will be conducted between February and July 2026. Literature searches will be carried out between February and March 2026 across the Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (PubMed/MEDLINE), Scopus, Embase, Web of Science, Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature (LILACS) and Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) databases. Grey literature will be searched using OpenGrey. Eligible studies will include cross-sectional and case-control designs. No language or publication date restrictions will be applied. The systematic review will adhere to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Two reviewers will independently select the studies, assess their eligibility using predefined criteria and standardised forms, and extract data. Combined prevalence estimates will be calculated in the meta-analysis using a random effects model with 95% CIs. Risk of bias will be assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute critical appraisal tool for cross-sectional studies and the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. Certainty of evidence will be evaluated using the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation approach. RevMan (version 5.3.5) will be used for qualitative and quantitative synthesis. Ethics and dissemination Ethical approval is not required for this protocol, as the review and meta-analysis will be based exclusively on secondary data and will not involve the collection of primary data. Findings will be disseminated through presentations at scientific conferences, publication in peer-reviewed journals, and communication with workers, employers and policy-makers. PROSPERO registration number CRD420251159127.

Tatiana de Medeiros Carvalho Mendes, Juliana Pontes Soares, Pétala Tuani Cândido de Oliveira Salvador, Janete Lima de Castro
International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, 2024
Health surveillance guides public policies, allows for the monitoring of occupational exposures that may cause health risks, and can prevent work-related diseases. The scoping review protocol herein is designed to map studies on the surveillance of occupational exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in gas stations and identify the governmental agencies and public health measures in different countries. This review protocol is based on the Joanna Briggs Institute manual and guided by the PRISMA Extension for Scoping Reviews. It includes research articles, theses, dissertations, and official documents on surveillance measures for occupational exposure to VOCs (i.e., benzene, ethylbenzene, toluene, and xylene) in gas stations from different countries. All languages and publication dates will be considered, and a spreadsheet will be used to extract and analyze qualitative and quantitative data. The final version will present the main surveillance measures implemented, responsible entities, results, challenges, limitations, and potential gaps in gas stations.
  • Sustainability of Interprofessional Education: Protocol for a Scoping Review
Nathalia Hanany Silva de Oliveira, Renata Fonsêca Sousa de Oliveira, Juliana Pontes Soares, Janete Lima de Castro
    Jmir Research Protocols, 2024
Background Interprofessional education (IPE) is an approach that can improve health care quality, contribute to the qualification of health care professionals, and train undergraduate students. Although this strategy has made significant progress in the last decade, integration, sustainability, and institutional growth are still priorities worldwide. Thus, maintaining strategies is essential for their full development and evolution. Objective This study aimed to identify discussions about the sustainability of IPE and map its actions or strategies (or both). Methods The scoping review will follow the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology. This scoping review protocol follows the JBI Reviewers’ Manual, with 6 stages: identifying the research question; identifying relevant studies; study selection; data extraction and coding; analysis and interpretation of results; and consultation with stakeholders. Two independent and blind reviewers will evaluate and select studies available in English, Portuguese, and Spanish based on the eligibility criteria. Searches will be conducted on LILACS, Embase, Scopus, PubMed/MEDLINE, ERIC, Web of Science, CINAHL, Google Scholar databases; ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Global, and Brazilian Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations. The main research question is as follows: What have been the sustainability strategies for IPE actions? This scoping review will incorporate studies (empirical or theoretical-reflective) that address strategies or actions (or both) for IPE sustainability. They must present a quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods approach and be available in full text. Data on strategies or actions for IPE sustainability will be extracted and inserted into a spreadsheet for analysis. Quantitative data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics, while qualitative analysis will identify meanings and patterns through thematic analysis. Thus, the aim is to present the compiled findings in tables and charts. Results The database search was conducted on March 22, 2024. In April and May 2024, duplicate studies were excluded. From July to November 2024, study selection will be carried out. In December 2024, data extraction and tabulation will take place, as well as consultation with stakeholders. The aim is to publish the results in scientific journals in January 2025. Conclusions This protocol will guide this scoping review to identify discussions on the sustainability of IPE and map its actions or strategies (or both); summarize the definitions and institutions that develop or promote IPE; and present the main recommendations for the area under study. Additionally, possible research gaps can be identified to guide future studies. This review will shed light on existing knowledge gaps and the current state of research, which could provide support for future research, programs, and policy responses to foster collaboration and interprofessional practice and, consequently, improve the quality of user care. This information will be useful in supporting decision-making by government officials, managers, teachers, facilitators, and students in the implementation, maintenance, and development of IPE. • Health schools of SUS: reasons of existence and contributions
Haroldo Jorge de Carvalho Pontes, Janete Lima de Castro
    Saude E Sociedade, 2023

  • Use of the Maslach Burnout Inventory Among Public Health Care Professionals: Scoping Review
Juliana Pontes Soares, Rayssa Horácio Lopes, Paula Beatriz de Souza Mendonça, Cícera Renata Diniz Vieira Silva, Cláudia Cristiane Filgueira Martins Rodrigues, et al.
    Jmir Mental Health, 2023
Background Work can be considered a source of living, well-being, and socioeconomic development. When the work environment negatively influences individuals, it may trigger emotional disturbances, behavioral problems, chronic stress conditions, and illnesses such as burnout syndrome (BS). Recently, studies on BS have increased and placed a special focus on health care professionals. The prevalence of BS among health professionals is associated with their chronic exposure to human hardship and long working hours without proper rest. These factors have contributed to greater stress and high physical and emotional exhaustion levels. Objective This study aims to identify and map studies using the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) scale to identify burnout syndrome in health professionals working in public health services. Methods This scoping review was developed based on the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Reviewers Manual and reported according to the PRISMA-ScR (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews). A total of 6 databases were searched to identify relevant studies: Embase, LILACS, MEDLINE or PubMed, PsycInfo, Scopus, and Web of Science. Gray literature was consulted on ProQuest Dissertations and Theses Global, Google Scholar, Brazilian Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations, and Open Access Theses and Dissertations. Additionally, the reference lists were searched to retrieve studies not previously selected. The steps followed in this study were proposed by Arskey and O’Malley and Levac, Colquhoun, and O’Brien: identification of research questions, identification of potential studies, study selection, data extraction and imputation, data analyses and interpretation, and consultation with stakeholders. The detailed methodology was published in a protocol. Results A total of 55 articles were identified after screening for eligibility criteria, published between 1999 and 2021 in 32 countries. Most reports were published in Brazil, Spain, and China. A total of 22 versions of the MBI were identified, presenting different items, scores, and cutoff points. The included studies had recommendations and implications for clinical practice. The consultation with stakeholders allowed knowledge translation for those interested in BS. Conclusions Studies mostly included physicians (34/55, 61.8%) and nurses (24/55, 43.6%), and the original version of MBI was predominantly used. Divergences in BS classification were highlighted, which may be related to MBI cross-cultural adaptations and applications in other countries. This study contributes to the advancement of research regarding burnout syndrome as an occupational illness since it has harmful consequences for workers, health care services, and the quality of care provided to the population.
  • The management of the COVID-19 pandemic and its repercussions for the SUS manager
Janete Lima de Castro, Carinne Magnago, Soraya Almeida Belisário, Samara da Silva Ribeiro, Tania França, et al.
    Saude E Sociedade, 2023
