Surface Texture-Corrosion Correlation of Nickel-Based Superalloy in Aqueous and High-Temperature Conditions H. C. Madhu Materials and Corrosion, 2026 Nickel‐based superalloys are extensively used in critical and demanding applications like aerospace gas turbines. Fatigue and corrosion resistance will decide component life, which depends on surface condition. In this study, the effect of three types of surface textures—electropolished, unidirectional (parallel) and randomly oriented—on the corrosion behaviour of IN718 was studied. Surface texture was characterised using an optical profilometer. Electrochemical corrosion tests were performed in 3.5% NaCl solution. In addition, hot corrosion tests were conducted at 650°C for 80 h. The corrosion rates of the parallel and random‐textured samples were about 23% and 63% higher than electropolished samples. However, once passivated, the effect of texture was negligible during the electrochemical test. Parallel and random‐textured samples gained 50% and 150% higher weight than electropolished sample. This study shows that the overall texture of the surface is a better indicator of both electrochemical and hot corrosion behaviour in IN718.
Influence of Sliding-Friction Induced Strain Hardening on the Tribological Behavior of Friction Stir Processed AA2219 Alloy Aashish John, Vimal Edachery, Muthumanickam Agilan, Anbukkarasi Rajendran, Sribalaji Mathiyalagan, Hullikunte Chandrashekhariah Madhu, Satish Vasu Kailas Tribology Online, 2022 In this work, the viability of Friction Stir Processing (FSP) was explored as a potential method to enhance the tribological properties of aerospace alloy AA2219-T87. The dry sliding wear properties of FSP, and as-received AA2219 alloy in mild and severe wear regimes were studied using a vertical- interaction tribometer by varying contact pressures and sliding speeds. The results show that, FSP samples exhibited an enhanced wear resistance in the severe wear regime and can be attributed to the propensity of FSP aluminium alloy to undergo friction-induced strain hardening in-situ during dry sliding. This recurrent ‘sliding-friction induced strain hardening’ facilitated for an increased hardness towards the sliding-interface, thereby enhancing the wear resistance and this was confirmed through cross sectional nano-indentation studies.
