Tereza Cristina Leal Balbino
Senior researcher at the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), Brazil, working in the field of Molecular Genetics of Microorganisms. Her research focuses on antimicrobial resistance, microbial diversity, molecular epidemiology, and the interaction between mobile genetic elements, bacteriophages, and CRISPR/Cas systems, with an integrated One Health perspective. She has extensive experience in genomic and molecular approaches applied to bacterial pathogens of clinical, environmental, and animal origin, contributing to surveillance, epidemiological monitoring, and translational research in public health.

EDUCATION

She holds a degree in Biology from FAFIRE and earned her MSc (1996) and PhD (2001) in Genetics from the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE). She conducted research and specialized training in molecular marker–based microbial genetics at the University of Notre Dame and at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, USA). She completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Microbiology and Molecular Biology at Fiocruz (2001–2002). Her research focuses on Molecular Genetics of Microorganisms, with emphasis on microbial diversity, molecular epidemiology and phylogeny, mechanisms of pathogenicity, antimicrobial resistance, and CRISPR/Cas systems.
