  • ENVIRONMENTAL COMMUNICATION BASED ON LOCAL WISDOM IN FOREST CONSERVATION: A STUDY ON SENTAJO FORBIDDEN FOREST, INDONESIA
Yasir Yasir, Yohannes Firzal, Chelsy Yesicha, and Andri Sulistyani

    Walter de Gruyter GmbH
Abstract This study aims to explore environmental communication based on local wisdom in conserving forests in the Kenegerian Sentajo, Riau Province, Indonesia. This study uses a qualitative approach with an interactive model. Researchers interact and are directly involved in many community activities. The results indicate that environmental communication in forest conservation is based on the local wisdom of the community by using the term Rimbo Larangan. The main communicators and actors are the customary holders, the datuk penghulu and the ninik-mamak (elders) as the highest institutional holders of Kenegerian Sentajo customs. This institution is more powerful than formal government institutions. These traditional stakeholders play an important role in spreading the message to maintain the existence of forbidden forest (Rimbo Larangan). In addition, the community’s desire to maintain customary values has given rise to attitudes and behaviors of people who are aware and care about forest sustainability. This is supported by Islamic values which have encouraged public awareness to have morals or responsibility towards the environment. Some beliefs, storytelling, and myths also reinforce this rule which makes people afraid to break it. The research findings can be used by the community in improving practices of communicating, managing, making rules and redesigning forest for conservation areas that are managed based on indigenous peoples.

    Asociatia de Geografie
This study aims to explain the higher education institution's role in developing Koto Sentajo as tourism village and to understand the tourism communication model that synergizes with other stakeholders. This study uses a qualitative approach that emphasizes more on depth. The method describing is done by the reality that occurs by interacting directly with the research subject. The results showed that higher education institutions have an essential role in developing a tourism village development model. This communication model is useful for attracting local governments and other stakeholders to establish the Koto Sentajo tourism village. The penta helix communication model involves five main actors, namely the campus, corporate CSR, the community, the mass media, and the Kuantan Singingi regency's local government, to develop the tourism village. The communication and collaboration between stakeholders in empowering the community can accelerate the Koto Sentajo tourism village's realization as a leading cultural heritage destination.

  • Redefining urban architecture in the decentralization era
    Yohannes Firzal

    AIP Publishing
Urban architecture can be used to assert thru supremacy via symbolic capital and symbolic domination. In turn, the architecture becomes a product of the future and of social change that is leading to both recognition of symbolic dominance and a field of power contestation. However, despite can generate positive effects, the reassertion of power practice in the architecture does not always occur smoothly and peacefully. The implementation of the power such as progressive societal and legislative agendas is also possible, in common with the rhetoric of unity in pluralism. This becomes a symbol of production of a group with its own set of preferences and is also mostly used to an increasingly broad distribution of power ruling regime. In this situation, the representation of the architecture can lose its aesthetic autonomy and becomes an effective medium in structuring and representing the power in the framework of everyday life. This paper is written based on a qualitative approach by collecting and structuring field data through several methods such as observation, fieldwork study, interviews, and group discussion. Through this paper, it is used to show how the practice of power has been connecting to urban architecture in Pekanbaru city. This connection became a key role in reinvigorating the existing field of privileged practices. This can be found Malay architecture has been appointed the main reference for urban architecture that must be applied on built forms of the city. From this case, urban architecture becomes a designated agent that is regulated and directed by whoever holds the power.

  • Reconstructing Urban Heritage Character

    IOP Publishing
The old town area gives a significant character on urban heritage, in particular regarding Kota Pusaka programme in Indonesia. While enhancing the character, in this case, part of Siak Sri Indrapura City has burned out, and raise serious issues to the local government due to lack of written data on how to reconstruct the area. In this case, extracting field data by conventional measurement from remaining buildings found ineffective. Not only consume time, but these methods have also created social and psychological problems for local people. Therefore various indirect field methods such as desktop research, digitising, and documentation are needed to be completed by more fast and interactive direct field methods. This paper confirms that field data which compiled by various field methods can more contribute to reconstructing the character of the old town. Keyword: urban heritage, character, reconstructing

  • The Evaluation of Changes in Camber Position to Deflection of Arch Steel Bridge in Extreme Loads

    Springer International Publishing
Visualization of the camber position, which has a negative value on the steel frame arch bridge causes user inconvenience and can even lead to a collapse hazard. Siak III Bridge is a national steel frame arch bridge as access between Pekanbaru City and other cities in Sumatra. Based on visual observations, the camber position has a negative value. Monitoring in the form of direct measurement of the bridge center coordinates using a total station tool to show that the camber decreases from the proper condition of the bridge coordinates. Purpose of this study to evaluating the performance bridge structure due to the combination load during the service life of the structure. Therefore, the methodology carried out was to analyze the performance of the bridge based on the model adopted from the 3D bridge and focused on bridge deflection. The analysis is carried out to estimate the deflection ratio of the bridge due to the load and to obtain critical conditions of the bridge structure. The deflection study uses Finite elements with SAP 2000 software. The results showed that based on the maximum deflection value caused by loading (SNI) T-02-2016 the condition of the actual bridge model was −196,470 mm at the ultimate load conditions and −185,731 mm under service load conditions. This result is still below the maximum allowable deflection (L/800) of 200 mm. the benefits of this research can be an input for the government and parties related to bridge inspection in providing appropriate assessments for maintenance, repair, and improvement of bridge functions.

  • Cultural Significance of the Place: The Key Factor in Urban Heritage Programme
    Yohannes Firzal and Irham Temas

    IOP Publishing
Siak Sri Indrapura city on the east coast of Sumatera was the centre of Malay Sultanate in 18th-20th century. The development of the city combined local and Europe architecture. In one side, this creates a unique urban character on how this architectural sense meets with Malay culture, which has maintained as the way of life. However, despite recognised as the regency capital in the reformation period today, the city struggles to maintain this architectural sense, in particular for continual urban development that is dealing with more socio-cultural challenges. Therefore, this paper investigates how Siak Sri Indrapura city deals with this situation, and attempts to adopt the urban heritage programme (Program Kota Pusaka) in last two years. The programme is assumed not only giving an opportunity to redevelop and to maintain the architectural sense, but also embracing Malay socio-cultural life in the same time. This paper used qualitative research approach through a systematic process that consists of the preparation stages, field visit, data analysis and interpretation, community empowerment, and the findings. This paper affirms that the urban heritage programme at Siak Sri Indrapura city has mainly determined by a cultural significance factor. The factor has not only used to maintain an exclusive set of collective local identities of the city, but also to become the main key factor in today's urban heritage programme in Indonesia.

  • Rebranding city: A strategic urban planning approach in Indonesia
    Yohannes Firzal

    IOP Publishing
Concomitant with entering the decentralization period has had a significant effect on cities in Indonesia, and is seen as a new era for local life. The decentralization period has also generated sentiments which are locally bounded that can be identified in the discretion given to the local government in charge to rebranding the city. In this paper, the rebranding phenomena have learned from Pekanbaru city where has changed its city brand for few times. By using a qualitative research approach and combining multi methods to collect and process the data, this paper investigates that the rebranding city has found as a strategic approach in urban planning today that is used to inject more senses to the city and its local life by the local government. This research has confirmed, for almost two decades of the decentralization period, the rebranding phenomena are not only found to generate sense locally, but also as a power marker of the local regime.
