  • Evaluation of Feeding Behaviour and Palatability of Domestic Cat (Felis catus) on Locally Formulated Chicken-Based Wet Pet Food Containing Different Flavor

Iop Conference Series Earth and Environmental Science, 2025
The dominance of imported products in Indonesia’s pet food industry necessitates the development of local alternatives. This study evaluated feeding behavior and palatability in domestic cats (Felis catus) using a locally formulated chicken-based wet pet food. A randomized group design was used with three treatments: control food, chicken-flavored food, and fish-flavored food. Pet food was given twice daily for sixty days based on daily intake requirements. The fish-flavored food had the highest palatability score (4.88), followed by chicken-flavored (4.71) and control (4.33). Total dry matter consumption was highest for the fish-flavored food (85.35 g), followed by chicken-flavored (70.77 g), and control (38.87 g). Protein consumption mirrored these results. Arachidonic acid content was highest in the control food (0.030%), followed by fish-flavored (0.028%), and chicken-flavored (0.020%). Cats fed chicken and fish-flavored diets gained more weight, while those on the control diet lost weight. Cats showed quicker responses and higher consumption rates for the flavored foods and no digestive issues such as diarrhea were observed during the study period, suggesting that these foods do not cause distress to the cats’ digestive tract. The chicken-based local wet pet food formulation is well-accepted by domestic cats and shows potential as local alternative in Indonesia.
  • Decreased sensitivity of cyclin-dependent kinase 4/6 inhibitors, palbociclib and abemaciclib to canine lymphoma cells with high p16 protein expression and low retinoblastoma protein phosphorylation

Canine lymphoma/leukemia cell lines with p16 protein expressions: high (17–71 and GL-1) and low (CLBL-1, CLC, Nody-1, and UL-1) were treated in vitro with cyclin-dependent kinase 4 and 6 (CDK4/6) inhibitors, palbociclib or abemaciclib. Cell proliferation decreased as a result, with higher IC50 levels observed in the high p16 (17–71 and GL-1) and one low p16 (UL-1) cell lines compared with the low p16 cells (CLBL-1, CLC, and Nody-1). As expected, palbociclib and abemaciclib treatment reduced pRb phosphorylation in a dose-dependent manner, especially in cells with low p16. These results suggest that CDK4/6 inhibitors have potential as new chemotherapeutic agents for canine lymphoma and high p16 protein expression may be used as a biomarker for resistance to CDK4/6 inhibitor therapy.

Rhipicephalus sanguineus is one of the vectors that could induce diseases in dogs. A physical examination and haematology test could examine the dog's condition with tick infestation. Five dogs, beagle breeds from Veterinary Teaching Hospital, School of Veterinary Medicine and Biosciences, IPB University, have been examined for physical examination and CBC test. A haematology test was performed using a haematology analyzer and made the blood smear. Physical examination showed that 60% of dogs have a tick infestation, 80% have pallor, 60% have pruritus, 40% have crusted skin, and 100% have wounds in extremities. However, the body temperature and heart rate were relatively normal. Complete blood count test showed that red blood cells (RBC), peak cells volume, and haemoglobin (Hb) decreased (80%), MCHC increased (40%), thrombocytopenia (100%), leukopenia (40%), lymphocytopenia (60%), neutropenia (10%) and monositopenia (80%). The blood smear result showed all dogs have positive blood parasites, with the highest percentage being the third dog (0.056%). From the physical examination, CBC, and blood smear, it can be concluded that dogs with tick infestation would experience anaemia that showed by RBC, PCV, decreasing number of platelet and positive blood parasite.
  • Simultaneous Analysis of the p16 Gene and Protein in Canine Lymphoma Cells and Their Correlation with pRb Phosphorylation
Leni Maylina, Satoshi Kambayashi, Kenji Baba, Masaru Okuda
    Veterinary Sciences, 2022
Cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor p16 (CDKN2A) primarily functions as a negative regulator of the retinoblastoma protein (pRb) pathway to prevent pRb phosphorylation, thus playing a critical role in cell cycle arrest. In canine lymphoma cells, methylation due to inactivation of the p16 gene has been reported. However, its protein expression has not been examined in previous studies. In our in vitro study, the gene and protein expression of p16 and phosphorylated pRb were examined simultaneously in eight canine lymphoma and leukemia cell lines (17-71, CLBL-1, GL-1, CLC, CLGL-90, Ema, Nody-1, and UL-1). Methylation of the p16 gene was also explored using the demethylation drug 5-Aza-2′-deoxycytidine (5-Aza). After 5-Aza treatment, p16 gene and protein expression increased and pRb phosphorylation decreased, suggesting that both hypermethylation of the p16 gene and pRb hyperphosphorylation occurred in four out of eight cell lines (CLBL-1, CLC, Nody-1, and UL-1). Moreover, the estimation of p16’s protein expression was better than that of p16’s mRNA expression because the expression of the protein was more stable than those of the gene, and highly related to the phosphorylation of pRb. These results revealed that p16’s protein expression could be a promising biomarker for canine lymphoma cells.
  • Protein Fraction Profiles on Dry Holstein Cows Vaccinated Using H5N1 Avian Influenza Vaccine

Iop Conference Series Earth and Environmental Science, 2020
The objective of this experiment was to study the effect of H5N1 avian influenza vaccination on protein fraction profiles of pregnant cows. Dry Holstein cows, clinically healthy, were divided into two groups, control (n=3) and vaccinated (n=7). The vaccinated group were injected by commercial killed avian influenza H5N1 vaccine subcutaneously, four doses/head, three times every two weeks. Blood samples were collected from the coccygeal vein, starting before the 1st vaccination, repeated every two weeks until calving for the concentration of total protein, albumin, and globulin analysis. Results of this experiment showed that there were no differences in total protein, albumin, and globulin concentration between groups and time of vaccination (P>0.05). In conclusion, the vaccination on dry Holstein cows using commercial killed avian influenza H5N1 vaccine three times before calving does not influence the profiles of protein fraction.
