The quest for higher, more sustained, and affordable solar cells has opened the floodgates to an incredible period of innovation in energy storage technologies. This chapter, “Revolutionizing Solar Cells: Novel Materials in Next-Generation Energy Storage Solutions,” reviews frontier materials driving this evolution of solar energy systems. It focuses on the new material science developments that achieve higher efficiency and durability in solar cells by developing materials that have huge challenges of efficiency, reliability, and scalability. The chapter reviews in detail a good number of materials that have been used, such as perovskites, organic photovoltaics, and quantum dots, and their respective evolutions of advanced nanomaterials, and discusses their impact on energy storage. It provides insights from cutting-edge research and practical applications in the quest for sustainable and futuristic solar energy solutions.
  • Bio-Nanocomposites as Functional Materials for the Future: Integrating Green Chemistry and Nanotechnology for Global Sustainability Challenges
    R. Venkatesh, D. Gnanasangeetha, Natarajan Sampathkumar
Synthesis Properties and Applications of Bio Nanocomposites, 2025
Bio-nanocomposites are leading materials that leverage the strengths of nanotechnology with sustainable, bio-based polymers and present a greener option for traditional composites. These are composites that comprise nanoscale fillers in the form of nanoparticles, nanofibers, and nanotubes, and bio-based matrices of starch, cellulose, and proteins. These are stronger in terms of mechanical, thermal, and barrier properties, and their green profile remains unscathed. Bio-nanocomposites present opportunities to answer global sustainability questions such as decreasing dependence on petroleum-based plastics, energy efficiency, and promoting the circular economy by combining green chemistry and nanotechnology. This chapter addresses synthesis routes, properties, characterization techniques, performance, and different applications in packaging, automotive, electronics, and agriculture. It also addresses future research directions to design the properties of bio-nanocomposites for large-scale commercialization.
  • Luminescent TiO2 nanoparticles synthesized from Mollugo Oppositifolia and Trianthema Portulacastrum for dye degradation, antimicrobial and antioxidant properties
Natarajan Sampathkumar, Aanthaparavasar Swetharanyam, Velusamy Arul, Seenan Jayakumar, Velankadu Natrayan Mutharaian, et al.
    Luminescence, 2024
In modern times, nanoparticles have materialized as indispensable things in contemporary medicine, with a variety of uses in clinical, drug and gene conveyance. In the present study, TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) prepared from the leaf extracts of Mollugooppositifolia and Trianthema portulacastrum were compared with the chemical TiO2‐NPs for antibacterial and antioxidant activities and environment‐friendly nature through various tools like the UV‐visible, X‐ray diffraction with the aid of other analytical techniques like HR‐TEM, Fourier transform infrared (FT‐IR) and photoluminescence spectroscopic techniques. The morphology of green TiO2‐NPs is found to be spherical, which is supported by HR‐TEM images. FT‐IR analyses and X‐ray diffraction data ensure that the polycrystalline characters of TiO2‐NPs alike to the presence of metal oxide. TiO2‐NPs showed a possible photocatalytic activity for the ruin of acid black 1 dye after disclosure to sunlight. The chemical and green methods of TiO2‐NPs have acid black 1 dye decomposition rates of 86.66% and 94.33%, respectively. The synthesized TiO2‐NPs are also assessed for antimicrobial and antioxidant activities. Green TiO2‐NPs exhibit antibacterial activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa (17 + 0.56 mm) and Staphylococcus aureus (16 + 0.24 mm) at concentrations as low as 100 μL. The green TiO2‐NPs showed high inhibition of DPPH I radical (50 μg/m) at 95.17 ± 21. Therefore, TiO2‐NPs represent eco‐friendly properties that aid in the degradation of dyes due to their antioxidant activity.
