Evaluating the sustainability of mineral water consumption using multi-scale hydrogeophysics in Caxambu, Brazil Emanuele F. La Terra, Miguel Tupinambá, Liliane P. Panetto, José Antonio N. Pereira, Tainã P. Oliveira, et al. Near Surface Geophysics, 2026 A better understanding of the near‐surface aquifer system of the Caxambu Water Park, located in the Minas Gerais State, Brazil, has been achieved. The study aimed to identify groundwater reservoirs and flow patterns and contribute to the hydrogeological conceptual model using a multi‐scale geophysical approach. Audiomagnetotellurics and electrical resistivity tomography methods were employed, in addition to surface and structural geology. Structural contrasts at different depths were identified, allowing the characterization of the key geometric parameters of the aquifer system. The obtained geophysical models satisfactorily mapped the resistivity of the alluvial deposits, the crystalline basement and the base of the Caxambu Hill at depths of up to 200 m. The results revealed a distinctive brecciated groundwater reservoir containing conductive mineralized water beneath the mineral water springs of the Caxambu Water Park and the adjacent hill. Furthermore, it was possible to identify a deformation domain of the Caxambu Shear Zone that transports mineral water from depths greater than 190 m to the near‐surface fractured and porous aquifers. The presence of a conductor in the alluvial sedimentary layer indicates that the porous aquifer connects with the fractured aquifer and contains mineralized water. According to previous chemical and isotopic studies in the Caxambu Water Park, the original construction method of the water fountains prevents the external contamination. These results contribute to the sustainable exploitation of the resource and provide essential information for the effective management of regional water systems, ensuring the preservation of the therapeutic characteristics of the Caxambu water.
Minas Gerais. ABSTRACT - In the region located west of Araçuaí town, Minas Gerais, blue kyanite deposits that produce top quality material for the world mineral collection market have long been known. However, their exact location and mode of occurrence were never reported. Four primary similar deposits were studied in the vicinity of Barra do Salinas village, Coronel Murta county. The mineralized pockets occur along structural lineaments with N20-40°E direction, related to the foliation of the Neoproterozoic (620-570 Ma) biotite schists of the Salinas Formation. Veins are thin and connect meter-size pockets from where the kyanite is extracted. In addition to the kyanite megacrystals in a quartzose matrix, the mineralogical assemblage includes staurolite, rutile, schorl and a complex mixture of muscovite + paragonite + microcline. Other Al2SiO5 polymorphs, as andalusite and sillimanite, are absent. The schist that hosts the kyanite deposits contains quartz, biotite and kyanite in the foliation, with garnet and staurolite as porphyroblasts; retrograde textures indicate that biotite and garnet are metastable. We propose that kyanite deposits were formed by the action of hidrothermal fluids during late evolution of the Araçuaí-Ribeira orogenic system. Keywords: Kyanite. Hydrothermal deposits. Neoproterozoic and Cretaceous crustal structures revealed by a 3-D magnetotelluric investigation of the onshore Espírito Santo Basin and the contiguous Araçuaí Orogen (SE Brazil) J R D Oliveira, E F La Terra, L P Panetto, M Tupinambá, S L Fontes Geophysical Journal International, 2023 SUMMARY The study region in southeastern Brazil is composed of two domains: the Cretaceous onshore Espírito Santo Basin and the Neoproterozoic Araçuaí Orogen. In this region, associations among geological evolution, observed structures and geophysical data are limited. Therefore, this study aimed to further investigate this region using magnetotelluric (MT) data obtained from 22 W-E spanning stations over the Espírito Santo State. Because the dimensionality analysis revealed a substantial 3-D characteristic of the data, a 3-D MT inversion using the ModEM code was performed to generate a regional geoelectric model, and potential and well data were used as qualitative support for the interpretation. The resistivity profile obtained from the model revealed a resistive pattern for the Precambrian terrain and a conductive pattern for the sedimentary rocks of the onshore Espírito Santo Basin. The basement of the basin was delimited in the resistivity model, revealing consistency with the basement depths from the well data. Furthermore, three crustal conductors inserted in a resistive Precambrian orogen were identified. These conductors may be related to the recent circulation of saline fluids associated with plume action during the Upper Cretaceous and Cenozoic. However, the structures in which these fluids circulate exhibit different genesis along the resistivity profile. The conductors to the west of the profile may be related to plutons and dykes associated with the NNW Colatina Lineaments generated by the gravitational collapse of the orogen (530–490 Ma). Conversely, the conductor to the east under the Espírito Santo Basin appears to be related to the primary detachment rift fault generated during the Cretaceous breakup of Gondwana.
Gold single-grain microCT scanning: operational constraints and first results in Brazilian alluvial grains Andre Diego Lima de Montalvão Barretto, Miguel Tupinambá, Monica Heilbron, Luiz Carlos Bertolino, Flávio Rocha Applied Earth Science Transactions of the Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, 2023 The present work sought to investigate the applicability of the microCT scanning beyond petrophysics in oil and gas industry. We analysed external features (morphology) with all their nuances, and internal features such as mineral inclusions and vugs, in micrometric alluvial gold grains from one of the largest rivers in Southeastern Brazil. Owing to the complicated X-ray interactions with any metallic material, mainly gold, several imaging protocols were used until obtaining the most appropriate one. The results corroborate that microCT scanning can be a useful tool in provenance studies of detrital gold grains, even in an adverse analytical context and with small gold grain populations.
