Exploring mango (Mangifera indica) fruit peel extract mediated bio-preparation of CuO nanoparticles for biological, dye degradation and sensor applications Hannah Numa, T.M. Sharanakumar, Lydia Yalambing, T. Naveen Kumar, K.V. Anasuya, C.R. Ravikumar, H.C. Ananda Murthy Next Nanotechnology, 2026 Green nanotechnology offers a sustainable, cost-effective, and environmentally beneficial way to create nanoparticles from organic materials rather than raw ones. Specifically, bio-waste such as fruit peels can be utilized to synthesize nanoparticles by extraction of their beneficial biomolecules. The present research reveals the green synthesis approach to produce copper oxide nanoparticles for antibacterial application by using the aqueous mango ( Mangifera indica ) (MGI) peel extract. The phytochemical testing of mango peel extract confirmed the presence of tannins, polyphenols, alkaloids, saponins, flavonoids, terpenoids, reducing sugars, and glycosides. The UV–visible and UV-DRS studies showed the maximum absorbance and energy gap value as 425 nm and 2.08 eV, respectively. The XRD pattern confirmed the formation of crystalline CuO NPs with a tenorite structure. The scanning electron microscopy confirmed nearly spherical CuO NPs. The antibacterial efficacy of the green CuO NPs was evaluated against the Gram-positive Bacillus Cereus and Gram-negative Escherichia coli bacteria. The maximum zone of inhibition of 11.6 mm was recorded for the calcined CuO NPs against the Gram-positive bacterial strain Bacillus Cereus . The synthesized CuO NPs proved to be potential candidates as antibacterial agents. The CuO NPs were also used for the sensor studies of lithium. The modified electrode's electrocatalytic response for Li sensing was found to be extremely concentration sensitive, as the anodic oxidation current rose progressively with the concentration of Li. The photocatalytic degradation study of Fast Orange dye revealed an absorbance at 495 nm during the time period of 90 min and exhibits a maximum percentage of 74 % absorbance value. The synthesized green CuO NPs proved to have multifunctional nature for futuristic applications. • Synthesis of CuO NPs using mango (Mangifera indica) fruit peel extract. • Fast Orange dye's photodegradation rate was found to be 74 %. • Electrode's response for Li sensing was found to be extremely concentration sensitive. • CuO NPs exhibited better antibacterial activity.
Fe₂O₃/NiO/C nanocomposite synthesis via the coprecipitation method for the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue dye: synergetic effect Abinet Mekonnen, Nejat Redwan Habib, Mamaru Bitew Alem, S. Giridhar Reddy, C.R. Ravikumar, B. Avinasha, H.C. Ananda Murthy, Buzuayehu Abebe Chemical Physics Impact, 2026 • The Fe₂O₃/NiO/carbon nanocomposites were successfully synthesized via a coprecipitation method • The FESEM-EDS image showed a porous morphology and well-scattered elemental distribution. • The nanoscale size of the synthesised materials (10 – 60 nm) was confirmed from the TEM image. • The the development of Fe₂O₃/NiO composites was confirmed from the HRTEM d-spacing analysis. • The nanocomposites catalyst showed an enhanced photocatalysis potential on methylene blue dye. Wastewater generated from textile industries mostly consists of a persistent synthetic organic dye, which has adverse effects on human health and aquatic ecosystems. In this study, the Fe₂O₃/NiO/carbon nanocomposites were synthesized via a coprecipitation method. The source of carbon is from spent coffee grounds. Different molar ratios of precursor salts, Fe(NO₃)₃.9H₂O (0.2M, 0.1M, and 0.2M) and Ni(NO₃)₂.6H₂O (0.2M, 0.2M, and 0.1M), were used. These precursor salts were combined with a constant 0.2 g of carbon coded as (1:1)C, (1:2)C and (2:1)C ratios, respectively. From the XRD pattern analysis, the approximate average crystallite size was found to be 20, 13, and 16 nm for (1:1)C, (1:2)C, and (2:1)C composites, respectively. The porous morphology (BET surface area = 122.826 m²/g), well-scattered elemental distribution, and composition were confirmed from the FESEM-EDS elemental mapping analysis. The approximate particle size obtained from the TEM image is found to be in the range of 10–60 nm. The HRETM image confirmed the composites' formation with d-spacing values of 0.24 and 0.16 nm for Fe₂O₃ and NiO, respectively. The white spots and concentric rings on the SAED ring image confirm the crystalline nature of the materials. FTIR results showed that there was a bending vibration that had to do with the Fe-O and Ni-O bonds. From the PL result, the (1:2)C composite showed the lowest PL intensity compared to (1:1)C and (2:1)C, indicating the presence of greater electron-hole recombination hindrance within (1:2)C heterostructures. The (1:2)C composite also showed the highest methylene blue dye degradation efficiency of 93.35% (k = 0.101 min⁻¹) at the optimized conditions and 30 minutes irradiation time.
Citrullus lanatus Peel Extract Templated Synthesis of ZnO/MnO2 Nanocomposites as Porous Catalytic Working Electrode for Electrochemical Lead Detection and Quantification Eneyew Tilahun Bekele, Sartu Mohammed Ahmed, Yilkal Dessie, C. R. Ravikumar, Syed Khasim, Dereje Tsegaye Leku, Defaru Negera Duke Chemistryselect, 2026 Contamination of water by heavy toxic metal ions poses a significant health risk around the globe. Particularly, lead has a severe impact on human health and the ecosystem. This study explores green synthesis of ZnO/MnO 2 NCs and their single NPs using Citrullus lanatus peel extract. Characterization of synthesized NPs and NCs was performed using TGA/DTA, XRD, FTIR, SEM‐EDX, TEM, HRTEM, SAED, UV‐Vis DRS, BET, CV, and EIS. The synthesized NCs and NPs were thermally stable above 45 °C. XRD analysis confirmed formation of crystallite sizes of 17.05, 22.6, and15.6 nm for ZnO, α‐MnO 2 , and ZnO/α‐MnO 2 NCs, respectively. SEM‐EDX and TEM analyses attest spherical structural arrangement while UV‐Vis DRS confirms band gaps of 3.00, 1.36, and 2.35 eV for ZnO NPs, α‐MnO 2 NPs, and ZnO/α‐MnO 2 NCs, respectively. The specific surface area was calculated to be 509.00, 521.00, and 525.48 m 2 /g for ZnO NPs, α‐MnO 2 NPs, and ZnO/α‐MnO 2 NCs, respectively. Lead detection was performed in an acidic environment (0.1 M HCl) using chronoamperometry at −1.0 V for 150s, with further quantification and optimization via square wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV). The study proved that ZnO, α‐MnO 2 , and ZnO/α‐MnO 2 based MWE are able to detect low concentrations of Pb 2+ ions in aqueous medium. Under optimized conditions, Pb 2+ detection and quantification were conducted for the ZnO/α‐MnO 2 based MWE under various parameters with a correlation coefficient (R 2 ) of 0.93577 and a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.008 ppm. ZnO/α‐MnO 2 based MWE exhibits excellent sensitivity toward Pb 2+ ion due to improved electrocatalytic property.
Bio-inspired synthesis of sea urchin–like hierarchical BaO nanostructures using Ocimum sanctum for enhanced UV-driven photocatalytic dye degradation and electrochemical sensing S. C. Asha, Roopashree B, Mahesh B, S. G. Divakara, Chamaraja N A, C. R. Ravikumar, Sangesh P. Zodape, Kumara Swamy N, Ling Shing Wong, Sharanakumar T.M. International Journal of Environmental Analytical Chemistry, 2026 A facile green synthesis route using Ocimum sanctum (Tulsi) leaf extract was used to synthesise BaO nanoparticles. The prepared BaO exhibited a hierarchical sea urchin-like nanostructure (NS) and was characterised using various analytical and spectroscopic techniques. XRD data indicated that the nanostructure exhibits a tetragonal phase with an assessed average crystallite size of 107 nm. SEM study unveils needle-like cluster morphology, indicating highly crystalline growth of the nanomaterials. TEM analysis further confirmed the 3D hierarchical sea urchin-like architecture, consisting of a central core from which sharp one-dimensional (1D) nanoneedles radiate outward. UV – Vis spectroscopy showed that the bandgap energy of the nanophase BaO was 3.97 eV, lower than that of bulk BaO (4.4 eV). The synthesised BaO NS were evaluated for the photocatalytic degradation of Fast Blue (FB) and Fast Orange (FO) dyes under UV irradiation. The degradation process was monitored at the characteristic absorption maxima of 617 nm (FB) and 496 nm (FO), achieving maximum degradation efficiencies of 77.52% and 73.75%, respectively, which demonstrates enhanced photocatalytic activity. Furthermore, the BaO NS were investigated for electrochemical sensing of lead and lithium ions, exhibiting a positive shift in peak potential with increasing analyte concentration. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy analysis using Nyquist plots established a charge transfer resistance (Rct) of precisely 3 Ω.
