Leaf Temperature Measurement Using Low-Resolution Thermal Camera Based on Thresholding and Clustering Techniques Aryuanto Soetedjo, Evy Hendriarianti Commit Journal, 2024 Leaf temperature can indicate photosynthetic rates, leaf water status, and stomata conductance. Leaf temperature can be measured using thermal resistance sensors, thermocouple devices, infrared thermometers, or infrared thermal imaging devices. Additionally, measuring leaf temperature using a thermal camera is simple and efficient. Therefore, the research proposes a leaf temperature measurement method using AMG8833, a low-resolution (64 pixels) thermal camera. The proposed system adopts an image segmentation technique to extract the leaf area from a thermal image. The leaf temperature is then calculated by averaging the temperature values on the leaf area. The proposed system aims to utilize a low-cost and low-resolution thermal camera for measuring the leaf temperature. The proposed approach is evaluated using real images of the Dieffenbachia plant, a popular ornamental plant that can be easily planted. In the experiments, fourteen segmentation methods consisting of eight thresholding techniques and six clustering techniques are evaluated. The experimental findings on the Dieffenbachia plant indicate that the most accurate leaf temperature measurements are obtained using local thresholding with an absolute error of 0.0109 and k-means clustering with an absolute error of 0.0134. The proposed method provides a simple, effective, and low-cost leaf temperature measurement system compared to the existing systems which employ high-cost commercial thermal cameras and complex measurement methods.
Development of an Internet of Things-Based Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition System for Wastewater Monitoring on the Communal Wastewater Treatment Plant Aryuanto Soetedjo, Evy Hendriarianti Proceedings 2024 International Conference on Information Technology and Computing Icitcom 2024, 2024 The wastewater parameters should be monitored regularly to maintain the quality in the range of allowed standard. A real-time wastewater monitoring system is required for effective monitoring. This paper presents an implementation of Internet of Things (IoT)-based Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) for wastewater monitoring in the communal wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). The proposed system adopts the Haiwell Human Machine Interface (HMI) as the SCADA system and integrates it with the IoT platform. To evaluate the proposed SCADA, the WWTP Simulator is developed to model the wastewater parameters, implement them on the embedded modules, and communicate with the HMI using WiFi. The experimental results show that the real-time monitoring, historical data, and alarm features work appropriately and offer benefits for wastewater monitoring and analysis. Further, the performance of Modbus Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT) protocols used for communication between HMI and WWTP Simulator is compared, where the data delivery ratio of the Modbus TCP and MQTT protocols is 99.03% and 99.78%, respectively.
Development of an IoT-Based SCADA System for Monitoring of Plant Leaf Temperature and Air and Soil Parameters Aryuanto Soetedjo, Evy Hendriarianti Applied Sciences Switzerland, 2023 Plant leaf temperature and its environmental parameters provide valuable information on plant growth. This paper presents the development of a plant monitoring system using an IoT-based SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition). The developed SCADA system monitors the leaf temperature and the air parameters of temperature and humidity, as well as the soil parameters of temperature, moisture, pH, electrical conductivity, nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium. A novel method is proposed for measuring the leaf temperature using a low-cost 8 × 8 array thermal camera. The sensor systems in the field are developed to wirelessly communicate with the Hawell IoT Cloud HMI via a Modbus TCP protocol. To visualize the thermal image on the HMI dashboard, a novel approach is proposed wherein the data are transferred using the Modbus TCP protocol. The HMI is connected to a cloud server and can be accessed by the users using the web browser or mobile application on a smartphone. The experimental results show that the proposed hardware, software, and communication protocol are reliable for real-time and continuous plant monitoring. Further, the evaluation of sensor data shows that the data from the thermal camera and air parameters sensor can be independently interpreted. However, the data from the soil sensor should be interpreted in consideration of the other parameters.
A Comparative Study of Vetiveria zizanioides Leaf Segmentation Techniques Using Visible, Infrared, and Thermal Camera Sensors in an Outdoor Environment Aryuanto Soetedjo, Evy Hendriarianti Applied System Innovation, 2023 A camera vision system is a fast and effective approach to monitoring leaves. It can be used to monitor plant growth, detect diseases, and conduct plant phenotyping. However, due to the outdoor environment of plants, it becomes challenging to use. This paper addresses the problems of Vetiveria zizanioides leaf segmentation by comparing different camera types and segmentation techniques. Visible, no infrared filter (NoIR), and thermal cameras interfaced in an embedded device were used to capture plants during the day and at night. Several popular thresholding techniques and the K-Means algorithm were employed for leaf segmentation, and their performance was measured using Recall, Precision, and F1 score. The comparison results show that the visible camera achieved the best performance on daytime images, with the highest Recall of 0.934 using Triangle thresholding, the highest Precision of 0.751 using K-Means (K = 3), and the highest F1 score of 0.794 using Multi-Otsu thresholding. For nighttime images, the highest Recall of 0.990 was achieved by the thermal camera using Isodata and Otsu thresholding, the highest Precision of 0.572 was achieved by the NoIR camera using K-Means (K = 3), and the highest F1 score of 0.636 was achieved by the NoIR camera using K-Means (K = 3). To compare the leaf segmentation performance of the thresholding techniques and the K-Means algorithm between our image dataset and the well-known plant image dataset, we also evaluated the methods using the Ara2012 image dataset. The results showed that K-Means (K-3) achieved the best performance. The execution time of K-Means was about 3 s, which was longer than the thresholding techniques. However, it is still acceptable for the real-time plant monitoring system.
Leaf Temperature Monitoring System Using Low-Cost Thermal Camera and IoT Technology Aryuanto Soetedjo, Evy Hendriarianti 2023 2nd International Conference on Smart Technologies for Smart Nation Smarttechcon 2023, 2023 Leaf temperature provides valuable information about the water status of the plant. A leaf temperature monitoring system will offer potential benefits in precision agriculture. This paper presents an implementation of low-cost cameras, namely MLX90640 and AMG8833, for monitoring the leaf temperature. The low-cost camera is connected to a Raspberry Pi Zero W, a tiny single-board computer that performs the data processing and interfacing to the ThingSpeak IoT platform. The experimental results show that even though the AMG8833 has a low resolution of 8×8 pixels, it can be used to measure the leaf temperature, similar to the MLX90640, whose resolution is 32×24 pixels. The AMG8833 achieves a refresh rate of 26.57 fps, very fast than the MLX90640, which achieves 2.10 fps. Moreover, three thresholding algorithms, Otsu, Yen, and Mean thresholding work properly to separate the leaf from the background. Thus the leaf and background temperature can be defined easily.
Leaf Segmentation Based on Thresholding Techniques Using Visible, Infrared, and Thermal Cameras Aryuanto Soetedjo, Evy Hendriarianti, Muhammad Suriansyah, M Rifki Abdilah, M Syahriel M, Mohamad Khafil Hadi Mubaroq Proceedings of the International Conference on Electrical Engineering and Informatics, 2022 A real-time plant monitoring system using a camera system provides benefits in precision agriculture and other fields. In the system, leaf segmentation is an important task to extract the leaf from the background for advanced processes. This paper presents leaf segmentation based on thresholding techniques, namely Isodata, Otsu, Yen, and Li thresholding, using RGB, Infrared (NoIR), and Thermal cameras. In the experiments, images of the Vetiveria zizanioides plant captured by developed multi-camera systems from outdoor environments were used for evaluation. The evaluation results showed that the highest Vetiveria zizanioides leaf segmentation performance was achieved by the RGB camera using Li thresholding with a Recall of 0.933, Precision of 0.603, and F1 score of 0.742. Furthermore, the results also showed that the RGB camera achieved the best average Vetiveria zizanioides leaf segmentation performance among the other cameras, while Li thresholding achieved the best average leaf segmentation performance among the other thresholding techniques.
