Multilevel inverters (MLIs) are increasingly popular consequent their instinct to prompt high-quality output voltages with low total harmonic distortion. Despite their advantages, MLIs often require numerous switches, complex control strategies, and multiple voltage sources, which can expand system outlay and complexness. This research introduces a symmetrical MLI topology that achieves five output voltage levels while using fewer switches than conventional designs, effectively minimizing both cost and control complexity. The adaptation of the presumed MLI is validated through simulations in MATLAB/Simulink) and experimentally verified using the OPAL-RT model OP-4510.

The study examines the performance analysis of a Boost-Type Five-Level multi-level inverter (MLI) for applications related to fuel cells. Additionally, a 1.26 kW 24 V PEM FC assemble was used for this study. The many operational modes of the proposed inverter are given, alongside its switching configurations. A universal PWM modulation method was used to operate the power electronic switches in the proposed system. Additionally, the quantity of active devices and voltage stress of the proposed topology are contrasted with those of the traditional topologies offered. The THD of proposed inverter was examined including and excluding filter. The novel system is simulated by using MATLAB/Simulink software R2016a. Simulated system is experimentally validated using the OPAL-RT OP4510 hardware in loop system.
  • A robust modified notch filter based SOGI-PLL approach to control multilevel inverter under distorted grid
Praveen Bansal, Shishir Dixit, Saket Gupta, Majed A. Alotaibi, Hasmat Malik, Fausto Pedro García Márquez
    Ain Shams Engineering Journal, 2024
This paper introduces a novel approach to enhance the control algorithm for a single-phase shunt active power filter(SAPF) by integrating a new technique into a 5-level cascaded multilevel inverter (MLI) with Photo Voltaic (PV) array integration. Due to the integration of non-linear loads in the grid, such as computers, variable speed drives, and other solid-state equipment, non-sinusoidal currents are drawn, introducing harmonics that distort the voltage and current waveforms. It is essential to mitigate these harmonics, and integrating Shunt Active Power Filters (SAPFs) gives the grid the ability to inject active power. In order to improve power quality and achieve active and reactive power balance, this integration requires an imperative control method. This work extracts the fundamental component of the load current and efficiently handles grid distortions such as DC offset, phase shift, and harmonics using a phase lock loop (PLL) based on a Modified Notch Filter Second Order Generalised Integrator (MNFSOGI). Using MATLAB/Simulink software modelling, experimental validation utilising the OPAL-RT real-time data simulator verifies the proposed system's operation. The control algorithm, which has been painstakingly designed and verified, allows feed-forward current estimate from the PV array, synchronization template obtained from the grid voltage signal, and estimation of both fundamental and non-linear load currents. The performance of the MNFSOGI-PLL is additionally compared with that of the conventional E-PLL, MAF-PLL and DSOGI-PLL techniques. By attaining power balance in multilevel inverters under distorted grid conditions, this research substantially contributes to improving power quality. According to simulation and experimental results, the Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of the grid current is found to be 1.50% in normal grid and 3.96% in distorted grid which is less than 5%, by IEEE-1547 standards. Moreover, the limitations of the presented multilevel inverter system are highlighted by the disadvantages of traditional 2-level inverters, which include increased harmonics, restricted voltage levels, and poorer power quality.
  • Design and Control Using an ISOGI-Q Algorithm for Grid Integration of PV-Array
    Alka Singh, Praveen Bansal
Internet of Energy A Pragmatic Approach Towards Sustainable Development, 2024
This chapter proposes the grid integration of a single-stage photovoltaic array (PV) via a voltage source converter (VSC). The VSC is controlled for active power injection as well as a distributed static compensator (DSTATCOM). The control of DSTATCOM is designed using an improved second-order generalized integrator (ISOGI-Q) based algorithm. In the last two decades, extensive use of nonlinear loads has polluted the grid severely. Various power quality (PQ) issues like harmonics injection, overheating of conductors, power factor, voltage regulation, voltage sag, swell, etc., are quite common problems. Mitigation of PQ issues can be easily achieved using DSTATCOM, which can be designed to inject a current to cancel the harmonics generated by the nonlinear loads. This chapter discusses a five-level cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter (CHB-MLI) realized as DSTATCOM Such a configuration shows several advantages over conventional two-level inverters. The CHB-MLI is always preferred due to its modular structure, ease of a developing prototype, compact size, and no requirement of clamping diodes and flying capacitors as in conventional multilevel inverters. The controller for the CHB-MLI is designed on a widely used generalized integrator (SOGI) algorithm whose performance is further enhanced to provide good performance in the case of DC offset and high harmonics. 2The chapter discusses the ISOGI-Q control scheme implemented to extract the fundamental load current and eradicate all harmonics generated by nonlinear loads. Further, to utilize the full potential of PV-DSTATCOM, the proposed system is simulated to work in two modes viz daytime (Mode-I) and nighttime (Mode-II). Mode-I refers to the daytime operation when the active power injection is a priority, while in mode-II, reactive power is fed to the load during the night for power quality enhancement. The proposed system is modeled and simulated in MATLAB/Simulink software. Phase shift pulse width modulation scheme is used to generate the firing pulses for DSTATCOM. Simulation and experimental results are discussed in detail, which depicts the satisfactory performance of the system. Results are highlighted, which show the harmonic content in source current brought within IEEE stipulated limits.
  • Control of DSTATCOM with Parallel Tangent Method Based Adaptive Control Algorithm under Distorted Grid Conditions
    Praveen Bansal, Alka Singh
Electric Power Components and Systems, 2024
This paper presents a new adaptive control algorithm for a cascaded multilevel inverter (CHB-MLI) used as a Distribution Static compensator (DSTATCOM) unit to mitigate various power quality (PQ) issues. A Parallel Tangent (PARTAN) Least Mean Square (LMS) adaptive control algorithm controls the compensator. The shunt CHB-MLI exports reactive power needed by the nonlinear load and improves the power factor to unity on the supply side. The system's closed-loop performance is also studied under a distorted grid employing an additional Second-order generalized integrator (SOGI) block. Modeling of a five-level inverter along with the proposed PARTAN-LMS controller has been done in Matlab/Simulink. Experimental verification of the same system is tested in the laboratory. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate satisfactory performance of the proposed system under dynamic load variation and distorted grid conditions. Further, the performance of the proposed algorithm is compared with conventional and new adaptive algorithms to ascertain its advantages and effectiveness. The THD obtained in supply current and voltages are within stipulated IEEE-519 limits.

A new control method for PV integrated single-phase grid-connected 5-level distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM) system is presented and investigated in this paper. It uses a warped digital filter control technique to estimate the fundamental component of load current from the non-linear load. DSTATCOM has been developed using a cascaded multilevel inverter and is used to improve power quality. The proposed system is single-stage, single-phase grid-tied and can operate in two modes viz. During the night, acting as a DSTATCOM unit and performing the necessary shunt compensation while providing additional power to the grid during the day. A conventional Proportional and Integral (PI) controller has been used to regulate the DC link voltages of both capacitors during the sudden variation in solar irradiance and load. Phase shifted PWM scheme has been implemented to generate firing pulses of DSTATCOM. The system is tested under normal and distorted grid conditions. Simulation and experimental results are presented and obtained within stipulated IEEE-519 and IEEE-1547 standards.
