Tunable physical properties of NiO/CoFe2O4/Ba0.5Sr0.5Fe12O19 nanocomposites via controlled synthesis S Farhat, R Awad, Z Bitar Physica Scripta, 2025 Four ternary nanocomposites (NCs): (1-x-y) NiO/xCoFe2O4/yBa0.5Sr0.5Fe12O19 (0 < (x,y) < 1) were synthesized using the co-precipitation method, ball-milling, and a 950 °C calcination stage. NiO and CoFe2O4 pure phases were produced without impurities as evidenced by the x-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. At the same time, Ba0.5Sr0.5Fe12O19 was produced with the α-Fe2O3 phase. The Rietveld refinements of the NCs showed decreased real percentages of NiO and Ba0.5Sr0.5Fe12O19, and increased spinel ferrite percentages compared to the starting proportions. This was explained by the reaction among the phases of the NCs. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and the selected area electron diffraction (SAED) presented different morphologies and planes, respectively, corresponding to the different phases of the NCs, in agreement with the XRD data. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) specified the functional groups in the NCs, corroborating XRD results. The presence of the Ba2+, Sr2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Ni3+, Fe3+, and O2− oxidation states in the NCs is demonstrated by the x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) technique. UV-visible spectroscopy revealed band gaps around 3 eV, indicating that the nanocomposites behaved as semiconductors. DC conductivity measurements further validated this, with the nanocomposite containing the highest spinel ferrite content showing the greatest conductivity (0.393 S m−1 at ∼783 K). The M–H hysteresis curves from vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) measurements validated the ferromagnetic behavior of the NCs. The magnetization derivative (dM/dH) curves revealed significant exchange coupling in the nanocomposites, primarily governed by the NiO and CoFe2O4 phases. The prepared nanocomposites are suitable for biomedical, soft ferrite, and microwave absorption applications, depending on their phases.
Comparative study between oxide/soft ferrite, oxide/hard ferrite, and soft/hard ferrite nanocomposites: structural, electrical, and magnetic properties S Farhat, R Awad, Z Bitar Physica Scripta, 2024 Three binary nanocomposites (NCs): (0.5NiO/0.5Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4), (0.5NiO/0.5BaFe12O19), and (0.5Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4/0.5BaFe12O19) were prepared using the co-precipitation method followed by the wet ball-milling technique. X-ray diffraction analysis showed the production of NiO and Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 single phases, while the α-Fe2O3 secondary phase appeared in the BaFe12O19 and the 0.5Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4/0.5BaFe12O19 nanocomposite. The transmission electron microscopy investigation and the selected area electron diffraction demonstrated the presence of the nanocomposites’ constituent phases. x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy identified the oxidation states found in the prepared samples (Ba2+, Ni2+, Ni3+, Zn2+, Fe3+, and O2−). The bandgap values ( E g ) of the nanocomposites are in the range between 2.79 and 3.66 eV, which indicates their semiconductor nature. The DC conductivity experiment confirmed the semiconducting nature of all samples, and the activation energies ( E aH ) and ( E aL ) at high and low-temperature regions, respectively, were calculated from the Arrhenius equation. According to the vibrating sample magnetometer, the NCs exhibited ferromagnetic (FM) as showed by the M-H loops. In the oxide/soft ferrite NC, the dM/dH curve indicated strong exchange coupling interactions, while the hard and the soft magnetic phases in the oxide/hard ferrite and the soft/hard ferrite NCs were weakly exchanged coupled. Significant uses had been found for each of the three nanocomposites according to their constituent phases and properties.
