    Pesquisa Veterinaria Brasileira, 2026
This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of an antibiotic-free footbath protocol with the product HoofCare® for the treatment, prevention, and control of digital dermatitis (DD) lesions in dairy cows, when used in combination with brushing the lesions with the same product. The study was conducted on a large commercial dairy farm in Brazil and lasted 15 weeks. The entire lactating herd, estimated at over 2,200 Holstein cows, was included. As this study was a continuation of the first investigation of the efficacy of this product in footbaths, the protocol was based on preliminary results on the optimal number of passages using pH changes and the effect of intensive footbathing with the product. The protocol consisted of a footbath with 10% HoofCare® applied once per day, three times a week, along with topical treatment of the DD lesions by brushing them three times a week on alternate days with the footbath. Data collection focused on the number of affected hind limbs and lesion classification (non-existent, inactive, and active) at eight inspection points. The results showed a significant reduction in the prevalence and incidence of DD lesions, from 49.85% to 17.17% and 20.91% to 1.80%, respectively. Furthermore, at the end, most hind limbs had no lesions (82.83%), followed by inactive lesions (13.22%), and active lesions (3.95%). Logistic regression analysis showed there was no significant impact of days in milk and lactation on lesion development (p> 0.8). Our findings demonstrated that this footbath protocol with HoofCare® combined with brushing lesions with the same product is effective in preventing, controlling, and treating DD lesions on a dairy farm.
  • Physiological transpalpebral sonographic eye measurements from healthy adult horses
Mariana Lopes da Conceição, Emanuel Vitor Pereira Apolonio, Juliana de Moura Alonso, Alice Ribeiro de Ávila, Gustavo dos Santos Rosa, et al.
    Equine Veterinary Education, 2025
Summary Background Relevant ophthalmic lesions affecting vision occur in 5%–10% of all horses. Thus, knowledge of anatomy, physiology, clinical and imaging is essential for the discernment of a healthy and a pathological eye. Ultrasonography is an important diagnostic tool for ocular diseases, providing information on lesion site, extension and severity. In addition, it is possible to monitor the treatment efficiency and prognosis. Objectives This study aimed to provide biometric data about the ocular globe structures of healthy horses in order to establish a normal ultrasonographic pattern. Methods Ocular globes ( n = 40) from 20 healthy horses were evaluated by transpalpebral B‐mode ultrasonography, using an 11 MHz linear transducer. Results The biometrics found in this study were: globe length: 37.78 ± 0.65 mm; anterior chamber: 5.01 ± 0.27 mm; vitreous chamber: 19.19 ± 0.54 mm; lens: 12.82 ± 0.93 mm; cornea: 0.88 ± 0.11 mm. Main limitations The obtained results can be more safely applied to medium‐sized horses (350 ± 43 kg). Conclusions This study provides normal ocular biometrics that can be used as a reference for the diagnosis of ocular diseases, especially when the lesions are bilateral and nontranslucent cornea hinder internal structures evaluation.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of copper-zinc chelate spray in the treatment of digital dermatitis (DD). 39 limbs with DD injuries from 36 dairy cows were included, divided into three groups: group 1 treated with spray alone, group 2 with spray and bandage, and group 3 with spray and bandage only in the first 3 days. The cows were evaluated for locomotion score and qualitative analysis of the lesions on D0 (identification of the lesion and start of treatment), D3 (third day of treatment), D7 (seventh day of treatment) and D10 (tenth and last day of treatment). The results indicated that there were no significant differences between the groups in the analyzed variables. The three groups showed improvement in the locomotion score and regression from active to inactive lesion stages. However, at the end of treatment, active lesions were still present in both groups. It was concluded that the proposed 10 days of treatment were insufficient for complete healing of the lesions, suggesting the need to extend the days of application, given the significant regression of the lesions in the established period. More long-term trials are needed to evaluate the effectiveness of copper-zinc chelate spray.

Arquivo Brasileiro De Medicina Veterinaria E Zootecnia, 2024
This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of topical HoofCare® in the treatment of digital dermatitis (DD) in dairy cows. Thirty-six high-yielding Holstein cows with DD in at least one limb were included and randomly divided into two groups, making 42 limbs. The alternating treatment group consisted of 21 limbs treated for three alternating days every 48h, and the continuous treatment group consisted of 21 limbs treated every 24h for five days. The cows underwent lameness examination, thermographic analysis, and qualitative and quantitative analysis of the lesions on D0 (time of identification of the lesion and prior to treatment), D4 (fourth day of treatment), and D10 (five days after the end of treatment). The data were compared between different time points and groups. There was no significant difference between the groups for the variables evaluated. However, both groups presented a reduction in the degree of lameness around the lesion, in the local temperature, and regression from the active to the inactive stage of the lesions. Thus, this short-term study demonstrates the suggestive efficacy of HoofCare® in treating DD and recommends conducting further long-term studies.

Partial or complete bladder eversion is a rare condition of poor prognosis in cows, commonly associated with intense tenesmus observed in the peripartum period. A 14-year-old obese Nellore cow at 280 days of gestation was referred with 24-hour bladder prolapse. The bladder was complete eversion through the vulvar vestibule showing a thick congested wall and small residual urine volume. After clinical examination, the cow received scopolamine butylbromide and intercoccygeal epidural anesthesia, and the externalized bladder segment was partially reduced, remaining only 10 cm externalized. The cow was maintained with an intravesical human gastric tube number 16 and constant monitoring. The eversion was fully reduced after 12 hours of local treatment, and as the cow presented subclinical ketosis, hypocalcemia and cystitis, antibiotic, glucose, calcium and propylene glycol therapy were performed. We opted for induction of parturition, and after 24 hours, a healthy 52kg calf was born and the placenta was delivered 16 hours after calving. The cow and calf were discharged on the sixth day of hospitalization, with no recurrences or secondary complications after treatment.
  • Abomasal Impaction in a Goat - Surgical Approach
José Ricardo Barbosa Silva, Juliana De Moura Alonso, Ana Paula Abreu Mendonça, Leticia Hirata Mendes, Carlos Alberto Hussni, et al.
    Acta Scientiae Veterinariae, 2023
Background: The abomasum is glandular and has a bagpipe shape, with a capacity of 1 to 2 liters. It has a very acidic content with a pH ranging from 1.5 to 3, and although disturbances in this organ are uncommon in small ruminants, abomasal emptying defect is probably the most common abomasal problem in goats. The etiology of an abomasal emptying defect is unknown, however, abomasal impaction is the main cause of this condition. Since this disorder is associated with poor prognosis and information in goats is scarce, the aim of this report is to describe the success of abomasotomy as a treatment for abomasal impaction in goats, as well as to describe the clinical and laboratory aspects of this disease. Case: A 8-month-old male Anglo-Nubian goat, weighing 33 kg, presented with apathy and decreased appetite for 4 days due to digestive disorder. According to history, the diet consisted of crushed hay ad libitum and 300 g of ration bran. Clinical findings were apathy, pale mucous membranes, ruminal hypomotility, decreased fecal output, tense abdomen with distention of the ventral quadrants and loss of rumen stratification. The increase in chloride ion concentration (67 mEq/L) observed in the ruminal fluid analysis was indicative of abomasal-ruminal reflux, compatible with metabolic acidosis, as well as the dense hyperechogenic content in the ventral field of the left and right abdomen corresponding to the location of the entire abomasum on transabdominal ultrasound. Thus, clinical, laboratory and ultrasound findings were indicative of impaction of the abomasum, and the goat underwent exploratory laparotomy through the left flank, which revealed a distended and compacted abomasum. Differently from reports in the literature, due to severe distension of the abomasum, abomasotomy through the right flank was chosen to reverse the condition, followed by constant monitoring and supportive therapy with antimicrobial and analgesic medication. The goat defecated normally on the second postoperative day, however, on auscultation, there was persistence of abomasal emptying failure, suggesting a situation of posterior functional stenosis. With the suspicion of type III vagal indigestion, the atropine test, along with radiographic examination of the chest and abdomen were performed, and did not reveal any changes. In order to restore abomasal motility, intensive therapy with prokinetic drugs (bromopride, metoclopramide and promethazine) was associated, and on the fifth day the animal returned to normal appetite, abomasal motility and fecal production. The goat was discharged after 14 days of intensive care with recommendations to provide good quality food and water. Discussion: Abomasal impaction is rarely reported in goats, commonly resulting in animal death before or even a few days after surgical correction. The diagnosis of abomasal impaction was based on clinical, laboratory and ultrasound findings, and should be differentiated from other diseases that progress with abdominal distention and gradual weight loss, such as functional stenosis; duodenal obstruction; vagal nerve disorder; abomasite; generalized peritonitis, and granuloma associated with Actinobacillus lignieresii. Surgical correction by right paralombar access associated with visceral emptying and supportive therapy of impaction abomasal was performed and considered successful, without relapses and secondary complications long-term. Keywords: abomasotomy, abomasal disorders, small ruminant, hoflund syndrome.
  • Chronic progressive lymphoedema in a Friesian horse: clinical aspects and diagnostic approach – case report
    J.M. Alonso, A.S. Borges, F.C. Stievani, L.R. Capela, A.L.A. Rambo, et al.
Arquivo Brasileiro De Medicina Veterinaria E Zootecnia, 2022
Chronic Progressive Lymphoedema (CPL) is a disabling disease of draft horses that affects lymphatic system function typically in the distal limbs. Deformities of distal limbs, especially of the pastern, with fibrosis and skin nodular lesions are consequences of disease progression. A 15-year-old Friesian stallion presented for evaluation with history of forelimb enlargement and nodule formations distal to the carpus for four years. Simple radiographs showed soft tissue nodular lesions and venous contrasted radiography showed intense enlargement of II common digital palmar vein of both forelimbs. Tissue culture tests revealed Streptococcus equi and Proteus mirabilis isolation and skin scraping test identified Chorioptes bovis mites. Histological examination revealed perivasculitis and lymph vessels distention. History, clinical and histological findings, and complementary exams suggested CPL diagnosis. We were unable to find previously published cases describing this disease in Brazil, where the increasing number of draft horses requires attention to this problem. The correct and early diagnosis substantially delays disease progression. Therefore, we highlight the need for nationwide propagation of these data to ensure better diagnosis and early treatment of future CPL cases.
  • Ultrasound with laparoscopy for the diagnosis of abdominal disorders in cattle
José Ricardo B. Silva, José Augusto B. Afonso, Carla L. Mendonça, Jobson Filipe P. Cajueiro, Juliana M. Alonso, et al.
    Pesquisa Veterinaria Brasileira, 2021
This study aimed to evaluate laparoscopy with abdominal ultrasound exams to establish accurate diagnosis and prognosis. The experimental design was a prospective clinical study. Nine adult crossbred bovines suffering from abdominal disorders were admitted to the cattle clinic for clinical examinations. Abdominal ultrasound was carried out, and complete blood counts were performed. Subsequently, exploratory laparoscopy was performed. After surgery (exploratory laparoscopy on the right or left side), animals with a severe prognosis or untreatable clinical condition were euthanised and necropsied. During laparoscopy, circumscribed reticuloperitonitis could not be detected, nor could other abnormalities in the cranioventral region of the abdomen previously observed on ultrasound and confirmed during necropsy. However, alterations due to peritoneal damage, such as adhesions, were observed dorsally in addition to alterations in macroscopic aspects of the peritoneal fluid. Exploratory standing laparoscopy through the paralumbar fossae may constitute a supplementary procedure for diagnosing abdominal disorders in cattle, but it is not suitable in cases of diseases characterised by focal lesions concentrated in the cranioventral region of the abdomen. When associated with clinical, laboratory, and ultrasound examinations, this technique may improve the accurate diagnosis and prognosis of abdominal disorders in cattle.
