Integrating ethnomathematics into digital learning materials to enhance junior high school students’ geometry problem solving skills Andang, Sowanto, Arnasari Merdekawati Hadi Multidisciplinary Science Journal, 2026 This study examines the development of a digital teaching module based on ethnomathematics to enhance the geometry problem-solving abilities of eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Kota Bima. The module was developed using the 4D model, Define, Design, Develop, and Disseminate. It was designed by integrating local cultural elements of Bima, including tembe nggoli weaving patterns, sarau hats, uma lengge architecture, and the traditional game mpa’a gopa. These contextual elements were connected to core geometry concepts such as symmetry, proportion, and spatial structures. The module’s validity, practicality, and effectiveness were evaluated through expert validation, student questionnaires, and pretest-posttest analysis using paired and independent sample t tests. The findings revealed that the module achieved a very high level of validity (mean = 3.49), was classified as highly practical (mean student agreement = 81.23%), and significantly improved students’ geometry problem-solving skills compared to conventional printed modules. This study emphasizes the importance of linking abstract mathematical concepts with students’ cultural backgrounds, while simultaneously addressing the longstanding gap in making geometry more relevant and meaningful to learners. Unlike conventional teaching materials that often fail to foster contextual understanding, the developed digital module effectively bridges the gap between theory and practice through culturally rooted tasks. The use of ethnomathematics not only enhances conceptual mastery but also strengthens students’ cultural identity and appreciation of local heritage. The implications of this study are multifaceted. For teachers, the module provides an adaptive and culturally responsive learning resource that can be integrated into classroom practice without requiring major curricular adjustments. For curriculum developers, this research offers a model for systematically embedding local culture into digital teaching materials to support character education goals and 21st-century skills. Furthermore, the findings indicate that the ethnomathematics-based digital module can foster students’ motivation, engagement, and perseverance in solving complex mathematical problems. Overall, this study provides strong evidence that integrating cultural content into digital learning media can serve as an effective strategy for enhancing problem-solving skills, as well as a sustainable pathway toward culturally relevant mathematics education.

Developing of teaching materials for junior high school students based on ethnomathematics on traditional woven cloth (Tembe Nggoli) of Mbojo tribe Sowanto, E Mulyadin Journal of Physics Conference Series, 2019 Abstract This research is based on the absence of teaching materials about the concept of geometry that is able to facilitate the students connecting the culture, especially tembe nggoli which is one of the traditional woven cloth of mbojo-NTB with the concept of mathematics. Ethnomathematics is a mathematical bridge with culture, and ethnography recognizes the different ways of doing mathematics in community activities. The result of this study is to produce teaching materials in the form of students’ worksheets. The method used is design research which includes: (1) preliminary design, in this phase is made Hypothetical Learning Trajectory (HLT); (2) experiments, in this phase existing designs are tested to students; (3) retrospective analysis, in this phase the researchers compare the HLT with the actual student learning process. The results of this research showed that tasks which were presented in teaching materials by considering learning obstacle and preliminary study able to facilitate students to define the properties of triangles based on their angle.
Ethnomathematics on Woven Fabric (Tembe Nggoli) of Mbojo tribe society Nurbaeti, Sowanto, Mikrayanti, Sarbudin, Edison Journal of Physics Conference Series, 2019 Abstract This study aims to reveal the relationship of mathematics with a culture that has been considered to be unrelated. This research was conducted on mbojo tribe society in Bima and Dompu districts. The focus of this research was about the weaving activities of the mbojo tribe society that produces the geometry pattern on their woven fabrics ( tembe nggoli ). The method used in this research was ethnography method with data collection technique that was through observation, interview to the weaver community of tembe nggoli of mbojo tribe society, documentation of geometry forms contained on tembe nggoli , to the making of field notes followed by literature study about geometry. The results of this study indicate that there is a concept of geometry at woven fabric ( tembe nggoli ) of mbojo tribe society that can be used as a source of learning and make students and the community better understand the relationship between their culture with the concept of mathematics.
Enhancing students' mathematical representation and selfefficacy through situation-based learning assisted by geometer's sketchpad program Sowanto, Y S Kusumah Journal of Physics Conference Series, 2018 This research was conducted based on the problem of a lack of students' mathematical representation ability as well as self-efficacy in accomplishing mathematical tasks. To overcome this problem, this research used situation-based learning (SBL) assisted by geometer's sketchpad program (GSP). This research investigated students' improvement of mathematical representation ability who were taught under situation-based learning (SBL) assisted by geometer's sketchpad program (GSP) and regular method that viewed from the whole students' prior knowledge (high, average, and low level). In addition, this research investigated the difference of students' self-efficacy after learning was given. This research belongs to quasi experiment research using non-equivalent control group design with purposive sampling. The result of this research showed that students' enhancement in their mathematical representation ability taught under SBL assisted by GSP was better than the regular method. Also, there was no interaction between learning methods and students prior knowledge in student' enhancement of mathematical representation ability. There was significant difference of students' enhancement of mathematical representation ability taught under SBL assisted by GSP viewed from students' prior knowledge. Furthermore, there was no significant difference in terms of self-efficacy between those who were taught by SBL assisted by GSP with the regular method.
