Journal of Software Evolution and Process, 2026
The Cloud‐Edge continuum enhances application performance by bringing computation closer to data sources. However, it presents considerable challenges in managing resources and determining application service placement, as these tasks require analyzing diverse, dynamic environments characterized by fluctuating network conditions. Addressing these challenges calls for tools combining simulation and emulation of Cloud‐Edge systems to rigorously assess novel application and resource management strategies. In this paper, we introduce ECLYPSE , a Python‐based framework that enables the simulation and emulation of the Cloud‐Edge continuum via adaptable resource allocation and service placement models. ECLYPSE features an event‐driven architecture for dynamically adapting network configurations and resources. It also supports seamless transitions between simulated and emulated setups, thus enabling the execution of experiments in simulated, emulated, and hybrid settings. In this work, we illustrate and assess ECLYPSE capabilities over three use cases, demonstrating the framework's effectiveness in rapid prototyping across diverse scenarios.
  • FastFlow-Python: Parallel Building Blocks in Python Through FastFlow Integration
Matteo Della Bartola, Jacopo Massa, Patrizio Dazzi, Massimo Torquati
Proceedings 2025 IEEE International Conference on Cloud Engineering Ic2e 2025, 2025
We present FastFlow-Python, a framework that brings parallelism to Python for stream-processing applications. FastFlow-Python enables developers to build high-throughput, low-latency data-flow networks by instantiating high-level, ready-to-use parallel building blocks. Built on the C++ FastFlow library, it leverages Python bindings via the C/Python API to efficiently manage parallel execution using both subinterpreters and multiprocessing, all abstracted by the framework. We demonstrate the performance benefits of FastFlow-Python through a comparative analysis with a pure Python stream-processing implementation, highlighting its effectiveness in overcoming the limitations imposed by the Global Interpreter Lock (GIL). Experimental results show almost linear scalability when increasing the number of workers.

Hpdc 2024 Proceedings of the 33rd International Symposium on High Performance Parallel and Distributed Computing, 2024
As the Internet of Things (IoT) gains popularity, the multitude of connected devices accessing computing facilities along the Cloud-IoT continuum has risen rapidly. This growth has prompted an increase in IoT-based applications and the data they process. These applications often carry specific Quality of Service (QoS) requirements, necessitating the research of strategic management for services and data, coupled with routes across the IoT and application components. Concurrently, our research explores the integration of Intent-Based Networking (IBN) principles to manage data flows and resolve conflicts among stakeholders sharing the same infrastructure. This dual-focus approach aims to support the effective placement and management of multi-service applications on Cloud-IoT resources, considering QoS, data characteristics, and resource conflict detection and resolution. This work outlines our primary objectives and shares findings from our ongoing research.

This position paper introduces Urgent Edge Computing (UEC) as a paradigm shift addressing the evolving demands of time-sensitive applications in distributed edge environments, in time-critical scenarios. With a focus on ultra-low latency, availability, resource management, decentralization, self-organization, and robust security, UEC aims to facilitate operations in critical scenarios such as disaster response, environmental monitoring, and smart city management. This paper outlines and discusses the key requirements, challenges, and enablers along with a conceptual architecture. The paper also outlines the potential applications of Urgent Edge Computing.
  • A declarative reasoning approach to conflict management in Intent-Based Networking
Jacopo Massa, Stefano Forti, Federica Paganelli, Patrizio Dazzi, Antonio Brogi
Proceedings of the 27th Conference on Innovation in Clouds Internet and Networks Icin 2024, 2024
Intent-Based Networking aims to automate network management by allowing users to express desired outcomes rather than manually configuring network resources. For its fulfilment, a user intent should be translated into machine-executable actions, which are then implemented in the infras-tructure, and their outcome continuously monitored. However, such an automated loop may be hindered by conflicts that arise within an intent or between multiple intents throughout their lifecycle. In this work, we propose a Prolog-based declarative model and reasoning methodology to detect and resolve conflicts arising from new incoming intents. By leveraging and extending an open-source Prolog prototype designed for intent processing and translation into Virtual Network Function chains, we show its conflict detection and resolution capabilities through an illustrative application use case.
