Collaborative Communication in Mitigating Abrasion Disasters Through Community-Based Tourism Yasir ., Nurjanah ., Samsir . Jurnal Komunikasi Malaysian Journal of Communication, 2026 Bengkalis Island is one of Indonesia’s small islands that faces significant threats from coastal abrasion and land subsidence. These issues are partly caused by limited communication about disaster mitigation among stakeholders and the low level of environmental awareness. This study explores collaborative communication strategies for abrasion mitigation through the development of community-based tourism. Using a case study approach, the research focuses on communication issues related to abrasion disaster mitigation. The IPMPL community plays an important role not only as environmental activists but also as content creators, media users, and key communicators in abrasion mitigation efforts. This community has significantly contributed to the development of the Raja Kecik tourist destination as a way to increase environmental awareness among local residents, tourists, and other stakeholders. In carrying out these efforts, the community collaborates with various stakeholders, including the government, universities, companies, mass media, local communities, social media activist, environmental activists, and tourism activists. The development of Raja Kecik tourism has become an effective communication medium for promoting abrasion disaster mitigation. In addition, tourism-based disaster communication contributes to improving economic income while also strengthening environmental awareness. In the future, this collaborative communication approach should be institutionalized to further enhance public awareness and build stronger community resilience against abrasion disasters. Keywords: Abrasion, community based tourism, disaster communication, environmental communication, mitigation.
Gendered Environmental Discourse in the Palm Oil Sector Chelsy Yesicha, Samsir Samsir, Yasir Yasir, Andri Sulistyani, Sesdia Angela E3s Web of Conferences, 2025 The palm oil sector in Indonesia significantly shapes both gender relations and environmental narratives within the framework of sustainable development. Plantation expansion has redefined women’s roles in production systems and community livelihoods, revealing persistent inequalities amid the industry’s growth-oriented discourse. This study employs Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), ecofeminism, and political ecology to examine how gender, power, and environmental knowledge intersect in palm oil–related communication. National policies and media portray palm oil as a catalyst for economic progress while simultaneously reinforcing patriarchal hierarchies and ecological exploitation. The findings highlight that women in palm oil communities often experience unequal labor divisions, limited access to decision-making, and increased environmental health risks. However, women’s counter-narratives—rooted in local wisdom and collective agency—challenge extractive and growth-centric paradigms, reframing sustainability through the lens of equity and ecological justice. The study underscores that integrating gender perspectives into environmental governance and policy is essential for advancing inclusive sustainability, social resilience, and ethical environmental communication in the palm oil industry.
Community-based Environmental Communication for Disaster Mitigation on Peatlands in Bengkalis Regency, Indonesia Yasir Yasir, Johan Afendi Ibrahim, Nurjanah Nurjanah, Samsir Samsir E3s Web of Conferences, 2025 Bengkalis Island and Bengkalis Regency generally have peatlands that are mostly abandoned, prone to fires and prone to landslides due to abrasion. The Environmentally Concerned Malay Youth Association (IPMPL) created a movement to cultivate Cratoxylum Arborescens (gerunggang) as a native plant to prevent fires. This research aims to explore community-based environmental communication for disaster mitigation in peatlands. The method applied in this research is a case study. The research results show that the environmental campaign is based on the problem of peatlands which are vulnerable to fires and landslides due to abrasion. IPMPL plays a role in campaigning for peatland conservation through gerunggang cultivation. This movement contributes to mitigating fire disasters in peatlands and abrasion landslides. Environmental communication based on Forest Farmer Groups (KTH) contributes to reducing the risk of land fires and can improve the community’s economy. This community collaborates with several parties such as: the Ministry of the Environment, Forest Management Units (KPH), district and provincial governments, as well as farming community groups in campaigning for environmental messages. This collaboration contributes to reducing the problem of environmental damage on peatlands. However, IPMPL has not maximized the use of social media to publish all its activities.
Environmental communication based on tourism management for mitigation of abrasion disasters Yasir Yasir, Nurjanah Nurjanah, Samsir Samsir E3s Web of Conferences, 2024 Indonesia has thousands of islands. However, many islands are threatened with sinking due to rising sea levels and abrasion. This research aims to explain environmental communication based on tourism management to mitigate abrasion on Bengkalis Island. The research method used was a qualitative approach with case studies. The results show that the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment together with other ministries, regional governments and experts collaborated to communicate to overcome the abrasion problem on Bengkalis Island. To mitigate abrasion, the government is building breakwaters, rehabilitating mangroves, and creating communication programs. The government’s environmental communications involve the NGO Malay Youth Association that Cares for the Environment (IPMPL) to deal with abrasion, as was done at Raja Kecik Beach. This community-based tourism was built as a means of government communication to campaign for the protection of the coast of Bengkalis Island. The development of marine tourism that is integrated with the prevention of environmental damage not only contributes to the economy and community welfare but also contributes to environmental sustainability. Communication based on tourism management has not been managed well. Therefore, the government must involve other stakeholders for sustainable development in the context of mitigating abrasion disasters.
Environmental Communication of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in Fire Disaster Mitigation on Peatlands Yasir Yasir, Nurjanah Nurjanah, Samsir Samsir Anuario do Instituto De Geociencias, 2023 Mitigation of forest and land fires is very important to implement in peatlands. This paper aims to explain the role of Pertamina’s CSR communication in mitigating peatland fires around the company’s operational areas. This research used qualitative methods with case studies. The results showed that Pertamina’s CSR communication contributed to increasing awareness of fire disaster mitigation and changing people’s behavior in utilizing peatlands through the “Kampung Gambut Berdikari” program. In addition, the community was also trained and provided with fire extinguishers to prevent fires on peatlands. CSR implementers establish friendly relations and foster the Tunas Makmur farmer group and the Fire Concern Community (Masyarakat Peduli Api/MPA) group to prevent fires. CSR communication is able to increase the awareness of the surrounding community in managing the peat environment. CSR together with the community develops peat arboretum ecotourism and pineapple plantations for environmental education and improving people’s welfare. This peat arboretum ecotourism is not only a medium of communication to spread educational messages to the farmer community, but also to school students, youth and visitors. In the future, CSR program actors can implement environmental communication as a form of disaster mitigation to prevent forest and peatland fires.
ENVIRONMENTAL COMMUNICATION BASED ON LOCAL WISDOM IN FOREST CONSERVATION: A STUDY ON SENTAJO FORBIDDEN FOREST, INDONESIA Yasir Yasir, Yohannes Firzal, Chelsy Yesicha, Andri Sulistyani Journal of Landscape Ecology Czech Republic, 2022 This study aims to explore environmental communication based on local wisdom in conserving forests in the Kenegerian Sentajo, Riau Province, Indonesia. This study uses a qualitative approach with an interactive model. Researchers interact and are directly involved in many community activities. The results indicate that environmental communication in forest conservation is based on the local wisdom of the community by using the term Rimbo Larangan. The main communicators and actors are the customary holders, the datuk penghulu and the ninik-mamak (elders) as the highest institutional holders of Kenegerian Sentajo customs. This institution is more powerful than formal government institutions. These traditional stakeholders play an important role in spreading the message to maintain the existence of forbidden forest (Rimbo Larangan). In addition, the community’s desire to maintain customary values has given rise to attitudes and behaviors of people who are aware and care about forest sustainability. This is supported by Islamic values which have encouraged public awareness to have morals or responsibility towards the environment. Some beliefs, storytelling, and myths also reinforce this rule which makes people afraid to break it. The research findings can be used by the community in improving practices of communicating, managing, making rules and redesigning forest for conservation areas that are managed based on indigenous peoples.
Corporate Communications in Contribution to Addressing Environmental Problems: Case Study of an Indonesian State Oil Company Yasir Yasir, Nurjanah Nurjanah, Nova Yohana, Samsir Samsir Information and Media, 2022 This study aims to explain the corporate communication of state oil companies through CSR in contributing to overcoming the problems of peatland fires and coastal abrasion. This research uses a qualitative approach with case studies. Research findings indicate that Pertamina’s CSR communication targets farmer groups in dealing with peatland fires, namely establishing good relations, strengthening farmer group institutions, and connecting with other stakeholders or groups. Meanwhile, to overcome coastal abrasion, Pertamina empowers fishing groups in meetings, provides training and develops innovations to conserve mangroves. CSR communication to overcome the problem of forest fires and abrasion is carried out by developing ecotourism through community-based tourism (CBT). CSR activities are carried out with a limited area scale, so that it seems only for publication and corporate imagery. However, the company’s communication with CBT can be an effective communication model in making people aware of protecting the environment. The Peat Arboretum and Mangrove Education Center are not only tourist destinations, but also a medium of communication for environmental education for the community. Environmental communication is not only directed to the local community, school students, and youth, but also to visitors, for media coverage and discussions on social media. Corporate environmental communications must be integrated with communication channels and stakeholders to support sustainable environmental development.
Environmental communication model through community-based tourism development in overcoming mangrove damage Yasir Yasir, Muhammad Firdaus, Nurjanah Nurjanah, Noor Efni Salam Iop Conference Series Earth and Environmental Science, 2021 Environmental crises such as pollution, forest damage, loss of biodiversity, and climate change are the real problems. The environmental changes can impact the social and economic life of the community. The destruction of mangrove forests and abrasion is a major problem on the coast of Riau Province. This study aims to explain environmental communication through Community based Tourism (CBT) in overcoming mangrove damage in Pangkalan Jambi Village, Bengkalis Regency. This study uses a qualitative method with case studies. The results showed that environmental communication through CBT was carried out by Community Development of PT Pertamina RU II Sei Pakning in collaboration with a fishing group. Environmental communication activities to overcome abrasion and mangrove damage are done by establishing good relations, strengthening fishermen group institutions, and connecting with other groups or stakeholders. Pertamina empowers the fishing group by holding meetings, providing training, and developing tourism-based innovations to conserve mangroves. The emphasis of communication with CBT uses the principles: friendship, deliberation, and mutual cooperation. Mangrove Education Center, besides being a tourist destination, its existence is an important communication channel for public education to care about the environment. This environmental message is not only addressed to empower communities, school students, and local village youth but also has a broad impact on visitors, even becoming mass media coverage and discussions on social media. This CBT-based environmental communication model must be supported and integrated with other stakeholders so that its existence has a wider and sustainable impact.
Penta helix communication model through community based tourism (CBT) for tourism village development in Koto Sentajo, Riau, Indonesia Yasir YASIR, Yohannes FIRZAL, Andri SULISTYANI, Chelsy YESICHA, and Geojournal of Tourism and Geosites, 2021 This study aims to explain the higher education institution's role in developing Koto Sentajo as tourism village and to understand the tourism communication model that synergizes with other stakeholders. This study uses a qualitative approach that emphasizes more on depth. The method describing is done by the reality that occurs by interacting directly with the research subject. The results showed that higher education institutions have an essential role in developing a tourism village development model. This communication model is useful for attracting local governments and other stakeholders to establish the Koto Sentajo tourism village. The penta helix communication model involves five main actors, namely the campus, corporate CSR, the community, the mass media, and the Kuantan Singingi regency's local government, to develop the tourism village. The communication and collaboration between stakeholders in empowering the community can accelerate the Koto Sentajo tourism village's realization as a leading cultural heritage destination.
